THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI
HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY
CHAPTER 6
Nephi writes of the things of God—His purpose is to persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham and be saved. [Between 600 and 592 B.C.]
1 AND now I, Nephi, do not give the genealogy of my fathers in this part of my record; neither at any time shall I give it after upon these plates which I am writing; for it is given in the record which has been kept by my father; [ Lehi could have written his record on papyrus or something similar; as Nephi was later commanded to make plates of ore and record his fathers and his writings 1 Ne19:1-2 ] wherefore, I do not write it in this work.
2 For it sufficeth me to say that we are descendants of Joseph. [ Alma 10:3 Manasseh -"3 And Aminadi was a descendant of Nephi, who was the son of Lehi, who came out of the land of Jerusalem, who was a descendant of Manasseh, who was the son of Joseph who was sold into Egypt by the hands of his brethren." Quoting Joseph Smith, Erastus Snow said "The Prophet Joseph informed us that the record of Lehi was contained on the 116 pages that were first translated and subsequently stolen, and of which an abridgment is given us in the first Book of Nephi, which is the record of Nephi individually, he himself being of the lineage of Manasseh; but that Ishmael was of the lineage of Ephraim, and that his sons married into Lehi's family, and Lehi's sons married Ishmael's daughters, thus fulfilling the words of Jacob upon Ephraim and Manasseh in the 48th chapter of Genesis, which says: "And let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the land. (Journal of Discourses 2 :184)"
]
3 And it mattereth not to me that I am particular to give a full account of all the things of my father, for they cannot be written upon these plates, for I desire the room that I may write of the things of God.
4 For the fulness of mine intent is that I may persuade men to come unto the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, and be saved.
5 Wherefore, the things which are pleasing unto the world I do not write, but the things which are pleasing unto God and unto those who are not of the world.
6 Wherefore, I shall give commandment unto my seed, that they shall not occupy these plates with things which are not of worth unto the children of men.
[ So we can therefor conclude that if it has made its way to these records then the author must have considered it of worth to us? Or the author did not regard Nephi's instruction, I think we will suggest that since most of these men were good men =, men of God. Therefore what they have written is considered by them to be something that we need to pay attention to. We might therefore ask ourself as we read, Why did this author think that this would be of importance to me?]
