THESSALONIANS
CHAPTER 5
Saints shall know the season of the Second Coming of Christ—Live as becometh saints—Rejoice evermore—Despise not prophesyings. [ Notice what the heading here says... ]
1 B
UT of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you.
2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. [ The phrase, thief in the night, is a Hebrew idiom, and refers to the practice mentioned in Leviticus 6:8-13 which stated that the priest who was in charge must wear linen clothing and must keep the fires of the altar burning: “The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar. The priest shall then put on his linen clothes, with linen undergarments next to his body, . . . The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.”
The priests were assigned to constantly watch over the altar fire and over the Menorah and were never to fall asleep during their night of service. In order to insure that the priest(s) stayed awake, the High Priest (or the Captain Of The Guards) would walk around the Temple looking for the priest(s). If a priest was found sleeping during a surprise visit, the High Priest (or Captain) would take hot coals from the altar fire, place some of the hot coals in a fire pan and take them over to the sleeping priest. He would then gently place the pan and hot coals under the sleeping priest’s clothing.
The priest’s linen clothing would soon be ignited in flames – clothing in those days did not have flame retardant chemicals imbedded into the cloth as do modern clothes. The guilty priest would have no choice but to leave his burning clothes and run burnt, naked, and ashamed back home. Quite a lesson not to fall asleep on the job or to be un-alert! It was this practice of surprise visits that according to Jewish tradition got the High Priest (or the Captain) nicknamed the “Thief In The Night”!
This provides a symbolic teaching for us that we like the priest's of old are not to fall asleep while we are waiting for the Lord to return as the Lord taught in Matthew 24:42-44.
Unexpectedly and without warning - but only to those who do not understand the signs of the times. what are some of the signs that will happen before he comes? 1)Total apostasy - the dark ages 2) A time of restoration during which the fullness of the gospel will be had on the earth 3)Preaching of the gospel will go forth to the entire earth 4)THe timers of the gentile will come to an end 5) Elijah will come again 6) Another messager will come to prepare the way for the Second coming of the Lord 7)The Lord will make various preliminary appearances in his temples 8)Desolations, evil, abominations, wars...both in heaven and in the earth 9) Jews will begin to be assembled in Jerusalem 10) Great battle at Armageddon THe list goes on, - so while the day and the hour are unknown the season is better known. Discourses of Wilford Woodruff we read p253 "
I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following:
Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter.
I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face.
I believe the coming of the son of Man will not be any sooner than that time. (D&C 130:14-17.)
Four days later, April 6.1843 at General conference of the Church, while the spirit rested upon him, the Prophet Joseph Smith said; "Were I going to prophesy, I would say the end would not come in 1844, 5 ,6, or in forty years. There are those of the rising generation who shall not taste death until Christs comes."
Let's do the math - First what is the rising generation? It would be all children who were born to parents that were there on April 6,1843 . Assuming that some of the youngest parents there (we will take men for this example) could have been in their later teens. The men could have fathered children up to some 70 years later if they married a younger woman. Then add up to 100 years to the age of the of those that could have been born as late as 1843 + 70 = 1913 + 100 years = approx. 2013 - 2023. So while we may not know the day we might know that the season is much closer than it once was. ]
3 For when
they [ Who is the they here? [ ] ] shall say,
Peace and safety; [ Interesting to note that the peace treaty put forth by President Trump on 8.13.20 is called "Peace to Prosperty". This sets up the Nation of Israel to have a place to begin to retun to. 1) Israel will be gathered to their home land Ez 36:24; 37:21; 2) The land of Israel will be reinhabited by the covenant people who will build it back up Ez 36:10-12;33-36; 3) The lane will become very productive and fruitful like unto the Garden Of Eden Ez 36:8, 29-30, 34-35; 4) Israel will be one nation in the land of Israel again Ex 37:22; 5) Jerusalem wil be reestablished as the capital city of the Israelites Zech 1:16-17; 2:12;12:6; 3 Ne 20:46; 6) Judah will become a powerful nation in regard to politics and warfare Isaiah 19:16-17; Zech 10:3, 5-6; The beast will promise to protect her but then toward the end of the 3.5 years the beast goes back on his word and begins to overtake her - first by desecrating the temple placing a statue of himself in the Holy of Holies. ] then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
4 But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.
5 Ye are all the
children of
light,
[members of the Church of Jesus Christ who
are striving to keep the commandments - lighted because they can understand
the signs of the times] and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness.
6 Therefore let us not sleep, as
do others; but let us watch and be sober.
7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
8 But let us, who are of the day, be sober,
putting on [ So this could be better translated as "having been [endowed] with the breastplate of faith and love". The word endowed appears only once in the New Testament as the word endued in Luk 24:49. However, the greek word used is "endyō" which is translated as; put on, or had not on (18x), clothed with (2x), clothed in (2x), have on (2x), clothe with (1x), be endued (1x), arrayed in (1x), be clothed (1x), and is used with the nuance of 'being enveloped by' which is very much like "being encircled by" in the context of robes of righteousness. If you retranslate the word "endyo" to "endowed" gain some interesting perspectives as to how we might better understand our own temple experience where we put on, are clothed with, and endowed, or encircled by the robes of righteousness. ] the
breastplate [ Part of the whole armor of God. ] of faith and love; and for an helmet, [ Part of the whole armor of God] the hope of salvation.
9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
10
Who died for us,
[ Salvation comes to us because of the atonement of Christ. ] that, whether we wake
or sleep, we should live together
with him.
11 Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;
13 And
to esteem them
very highly [we should show great respect to our
quorum leaders, bishops and other church officers] in love for their work’s
sake.
And be
at peace among
yourselves.
14 Now
we exhort you,
[we
very strongly suggest, urge or encourage] brethren,
[those
in these leadership positions] 1) warn them
that are unruly,
2) comfort the feebleminded,
[the fainthearted] 3) support the weak,
4) be patient toward all men.
15
5) See that none render evil for
evil unto any
cman;
but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all
men.
17
7) Pray without
ceasing.
18
8) In every thing give thanks:
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
19
9) Quench not
the Spirit.
[follow your promptings, don't suppress or crush those
promptings - listen to the spirit]
20
10) Despise
not prophesyings.
[believe in and follow revelation]
21
Prove all
things;
[What does this mean? Prove
them with the spirit - it is our right to gain a testimony of all things.
Why is is important to prove all things? We need
the testimonies for ourselves we cannot live on someone else's testimony] hold
fast that which is good.
22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and
I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 Faithful
is he that calleth you, who also will do
it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with an holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
be with you. Amen.
