TIMOTHY
CHAPTER 2
We should pray for all men—Christ is our mediator—Women should dress modestly—Women blessed in childbearing—Admonished to continue in faith, charity, holiness.
1 I EXHORT therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
For kings, and for all that are in authority; [ I think that the saints may have had a really hard time accepting that they were to pray for Ceasar, the very one who was making their life miserable. ] that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
Who will have all men to be saved, [ Everyone is saved? Or just those who accept Christ so that he can save them? The all would nat make sense given that he is telling them to pray for Ceasar and then live a peaceable life in order to have the character of God. ] and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. [ That Jesus Christ did live, that he did atone for all sin, that is we accept him and come unto him we can have his grace extended to us that we may be saved. See JST for better version: "4 Who is willing to have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth which is in Christ Jesus, who is the Only Begotten son of God, and ordained to be a Mediator between God and man; who is one God, and hath power over all men." ]
5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; [ Remember, before the Fall there was no need for a Savior. But if they partake, then a Savior will be provided. The role of Savior has as a provision that He will be the mediator between Man and God. ]
6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.
8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.
9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived,[ What is the difference here that Paul was trying to espress? Thtat Eve was decieved but Adam had a decision to make; whether to complete his mission which included stayinf with his helpmate or letting her go off on her own as she would eventually die and he would be all alone. So he was complelled to make a choice. ] but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. [ Elder George Albert Smith taught in conference Oct 1928 "Why does Paul say that Eve was deceived?" No doubt she was, in some ways. But in the most important matters she made an intelligent and a wise choice we will probably have to wait until we get a chance talk to Eve perhaps during the millennium for the complete account if you listen carefully to what she said in the account is given in the holy places you will be reminded that she ask important and intelligent questions before partaking of the fruit and responded within selfishness yet there could be many ways in which she was deceived perhaps in the sense of not believing that mortality would be so difficult at times perhaps she had no idea that what would be like to care for 20 or 30 sick children when they all have the flu maybe she was deceived into thinking that all day and age with its attendant pains and disabilities would not be difficult actually she could've understood all these physical struggles because she had no basis on which to judge because she and her husband were not your mortal even though they had physical bodies at this point."]
15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity [ True power from God is safeguarded by one attribute alone and that is charity. This is one of the foremost attribues of Heavenly Father and His son Jesus Christ. So when we talk about charity hat God is saying is in order to wield my power I need to know that you have an eye single to the glory of God - the immortality and eternal life of man. ] and holiness with sobriety.
