THE SECOND BOOK OF NEPHI
CHAPTER 29
Many gentiles shall reject the Book of Mormon—They shall say: We need no more Bible—The Lord speaks to many nations—He will judge the world out of the books thus written. [Between 559 and 545 B.C.]
1 BUT behold, there shall be many—at that day when I shall proceed to do a marvelous work [ This phrase "marvelous work" included the following definitions of what it means: 1) Events that God will use to sift the world( 1 Ne. 14:7); 2) Bare forth the arm of the Lord (1 Ne.22:8); 3)Two latter day Messiahs - One real and one fake( 2 Ne. 25:17-18); 4)The marvelous work will cause the wisdom of the world to perish (2 Ne. 27:26); 5)All of the records of Israel will testify of these things (2 Ne. 29:1,3,7,13,14); 6) Will bear record that Gos is the same yesterday, today, and forever(3 Ne.21:9); 7)The three Nephites and John The Beloved have a role to play in the marvelous work of the last days (3 Ne. 28:31,29,33) ] among them, that I may remember my covenants which I have made unto the children of men, that I may set my hand again the second time [ He did this the first time when he led the children of Israel out of Egyptian bondage. ] to recover my people, which are of the house of Israel; [ All who are of the house of Israel. so what then is the purpose of his message here? To gather Israel the second or the last time. ]
2 And also, that I may remember the promises which I have made unto thee, Nephi, and also unto thy father, that I would remember your seed; [ The follow up is that the Lord is addressing the specific activities of the Nephites. ] and that the words of your seed should proceed forth out of my mouth unto your seed; and my words shall hiss forth unto the ends of the earth, for a standard unto my people, which are of the house of Israel;
And because my words shall hiss forth[ “Our main task is to declare the gospel and do it effectively. We are not obligated to answer every objection. Every man eventually is backed up to the wall of faith, and there he must make his stand. . . . “The Book of Mormon is to be used ‘for a standard unto my people, which are of the house of Israel,’ the Lord says, and its words ‘shall hiss forth unto the ends of the earth.’ (2 Ne. 29:2.) We, the members of the Church, and particularly the missionaries, have to be the ‘hissers,’ or the tellers and testifiers, of the Book of Mormon unto the ends of the earth. “The Book of Mormon is the great standard we are to use. . . . The Book of Mormon is the great finder of the golden contact. It does not contain things which are ‘pleasing unto the world’ (1 Ne. 6:5). . . . It is a great sieve” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1975, 95–96; or Ensign, May 1975, 65). ] many of the Gentiles shall say: A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible.
4 But thus saith the Lord God: O fools, [ A wicked or depraved person; one who acts contrary to sound wisdom in his moral deportment; one who follows his own inclinations, who prefers trifling and temporary pleasures to the service of God and eternal happiness. Websters Dictionary -1828 version. ] they shall have a Bible; and it shall proceed forth from the Jews, mine ancient covenant people. And what thank they the Jews for the Bible which they receive from them? Yea, what do the Gentiles mean? Do they remember the travails, and the labors, and the pains of the Jews, and their diligence unto me, in bringing forth salvation unto the Gentiles?
5 O ye Gentiles, have ye remembered the Jews, mine ancient covenant people? Nay; but ye have cursed them, and have hated them, and have not sought to recover them. But behold, I will return all these things upon your own heads; for I the Lord have not forgotten my people.
6 Thou fool, that shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. [ We already have all that there ever can be - there is no need for modern day revealtion, there is no need for the knowledge of what the Lord did with the Nephites and Lamanites. How foolish to think that there could only be one source; one set of the Lords dealings with mankind. ] Have ye obtained a Bible save it were by the Jews? [ The implication is that it is their history not yours, where is your history? Do you even have one? Is it lost? Where would you be without the Bible then? ]

Know ye not that there are more nations than one? [ Or do you think that I cannot accomplish my work with more than one nation at a time. Do you suppose that my covenants are just for a select group of people? Joseph Fielding Smith identified the two nations referred to in 2 Nephi 29:7–8: “This was spoken by prophecy to the gentiles of the present day. It should be remembered also, that the law given to Israel was that ‘the testimony of two men is true,’ providing they are honorable witnesses. Here the Lord applies the law to nations. Why should it not be so? “If the word of the Lord is to be established by two chosen witnesses, then we may well look for two chosen nations to stand as witnesses for Jesus Christ. One such nation was Israel in Palestine, the other was Israel in America, Judah speaking from the Old World and Joseph from the New. Today these two testimonies for God and his truth have run together” (Doctrines of Salvation, comp. Bruce R. McConkie, 3 vols. [1954–56], 1:278).] Know ye not that I, the Lord your God, have created all men, and that I remember those who are upon the isles of the sea; and that I rule in the heavens above and in the earth beneath; and I bring forth my word unto the children of men, yea, even upon all the nations of the earth?

8 Wherefore murmur ye, because that [ "because that" How could Joseph Smith have known? Biblical Hebrew begins subordinate clauses with prepositions plus a word that translates as that, such as in Ezekiel 40:1: "after that the city was smitten." Such a use of that in English is awkward and therefore rare. Yet it appears frequently in the Book of Mormon, another evidence of Hebrew influence. It was even more frequent in the 1830 edition, but many of the thats were dropped from later editions to read more smoothly.(The Maxwell Institute - Hebrew Background of the Book Of Mormon; John A. Tvedtnes) ] ye shall receive more of my word? Know ye not that the testimony of two nations is a witness unto you that I am God, that I remember one nation like unto another? Wherefore, I speak the same words unto one nation like unto another. And when the two nations shall run together the testimony of the two nations shall run together also.
9 And I do this that I may prove unto many that I am the same yesterday, today, and forever; and that I speak forth my words according to mine own pleasure. And because that I have spoken one word ye need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet finished; neither shall it be until the end of man, neither from that time henceforth and forever.
10 Wherefore, because that ye have a Bible ye need not suppose that it contains all my words; neither need ye suppose that I have not caused more to be written.

11 For I command all men, both in the east and in the west, and in the north, and in the south, and in the islands of the sea, that they shall write the words which I speak unto them; for out of the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man according to their works, according to that which is written.

[ Compare vs 12- 14 with 2 Ne 30:15-18 ]

12 For behold, I shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it; [ The Jews will keep a record of what I teach them. The Bible. ] and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it; [ The Nephites will keep the record of what I teach them. The Book of Mormon. ] and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the house of Israel, [ The Lost ten tribes. But where is their record? Do we have it with us today? No. So that means that this record will come as part of the restoration of all things (with the ten tribes) 10th article of faith. ] which I have led away, [ So they were lead by the Lord, it is not that they just wandered off, or that they were scattered. Just as he will lead them back when the time is right. ] and they shall write it; [ The Ten tribes will bring their records of what God has taught them. ] and I shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it. [“ Other Lost books are among the treasures yet to come forth. Over twenty of these are mentioned in the existing scriptures. Perhaps most startling and voluminous will be the records of the lost tribes of Israel (see 2 Nephi 29:13). We would not even know of the impending third witness for Christ except through the precious Book of Mormon, the second witness for Christ! This third set of sacred records will thus complete a triad of truth. Then, just as the Perfect Shepherd has said, ‘My word also shall be gathered in one’ (v. 14). There will be ‘one fold and one shepherd’ (1 Nephi 22:25) in a welding together of all the Christian dispensations of human history (see D&C 128:18)” (in Conference Report, Oct. 1986, 70; or Ensign, Nov. 1986, 52). One of the themes of the Book of Mormon is the joining of all that the Lord has taught together into one. This concept is taught in 2 Nephi 29:12–13. Later examples in the Book of Mormon include King Limhi and Ammon returning with the Jaredite record (see Mosiah 28:12, 14), King Limhi and Ammon returning with their own records (see Mosiah 7:1–2, 17–33; 8:1, 3–4), and Alma’s colony returning with their records (see Mosiah 22:16; 25:1–6). ]
[ References to the three groups that make up the house of Israel. ] 13 And it shall come to pass that the Jews [ Judah. ] shall have the words of the Nephites, [ The house of Joseph ( Ephraim and Manasseh). ] and the Nephites shall have the words of the Jews; and the Nephites and the Jews shall have the words of the lost tribes of Israel; [ The remnant of Jacob. Can you imagine those records as they deal with those whom the Lord has led off of this planet to the heavens. When Nephi wrote of these records of the Lost Ten Tribes he was referring to the main body of that tribe, those who were led away by the hand of the Lord. Those who were watched over by John, those who were given the wings of a great eagle and carried away from before the face of the dragon (Satan) they were removed from his presence which is the earth. When they return with their records we will see the dealings of God with those in the larger universe. ] and the lost tribes of Israel shall have the words of the Nephites and the Jews. [ The fact that each of these groups has their own set of scripture denotes two things: 1) The lord spoke to them as a group 2) They were together long enough as a groups that the Lord had come to teach them and give them instruction and scripture. As a matter of fact Elder James E. Talmage made the follow prophecy in October General Conference 1916. “There are those who would juggle with the predictions of the Lord's prophets. I read that in the last days one of the conditions preceding the return of the Christ to earth shall be the gathering of the Jews at their ancient capital, and in the land round about; and that another sign shall be the gathering of the people who have been scattered among the nations; and yet another shall be the bringing forth of the Lost Tribes from their hiding place, which is known to God, but unknown to man. Nevertheless, I have found elders in Israel who would tell me that the predictions relating to the Lost Tribes are to be explained in this figurative manner — that the gathering of those tribes is already well advanced and that there is no hiding place whereto God has led them, from which they shall come forth, led by their prophets to receive their blessings here at the hands of gathered Ephraim, the gathered portions that have been scattered among the nations. Yea, let God be true, and doubt we not his word, though it makes the opinions of men appear to be lies. The tribes shall come; they are not lost unto the Lord ; they shall be brought forth as hath been predicted; and I say unto you there are those now living — aye, some here present — who shall live to read the records of the Lost Tribes of Israel, which shall be made one with the record of the Jews, or the Holy Bible, and the record of the Nephrites, or the Book of Mormon, even as the Lord hath predicted; and those records, which the tribes lost to man but yet to be found again shall bring, shall tell of the visit of the resurrected Christ to them, after He had manifested Himself to the Nephites upon this continent. For, as not one jot or tittle of the Law has been permitted to fail, so surely no jot or tittle of the Gospel shall go unfulfilled". ]
14 And it shall come to pass that my people, which are of the house of Israel, shall be gathered home unto the lands of their possessions; and my word also shall be gathered in one. And I will show unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the house of Israel, that I am God, and that I covenanted with [ Nephi has taught us that the Book Of Mormon, and the words of Isaiah would together instruct the Gentiles pertaining to the covenants that the Lord has made with the House of Israel. This is why President Nelson has instructed us to study the covenants that God made with Israel, and how we will become astounded if we will do so. The blessings and promises are beyond the scope of human understanding as to how they will be able to be accomplished, and yet with God they will. ] Abraham [ What was the covenant that they Lord made with Abraham? a covenant between the lord and Abraham which included 1) promise of land 2) promise of prosperity 3) promise of priesthood blessings 4) promise of gospel blessings for all families. ] that I would remember his seed forever. [ No matter where he has led them. ]
