THE SECOND BOOK OF NEPHI
CHAPTER 30
Converted gentiles shall be numbered with the covenant people—Many Lamanites and Jews shall believe the word and become a delightsome people—Israel shall be restored and the wicked destroyed. [Between 559 and 545 B.C.]
AND now behold, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto you; for I, Nephi, would not suffer that ye should suppose that ye are more righteous than the Gentiles shall be. For behold, except ye shall keep the commandments of God ye shall all likewise perish; and because of the words which have been spoken ye need not suppose that the Gentiles are utterly destroyed.
For behold, I say unto you that as many of the Gentiles as will repent are the covenant people of the Lord; and as many of the Jews as will not repent shall be cast off; for the Lord covenanteth with none save it be with them that repent and believe in his son, [ Why is it that the Lord will only covenant with those who repent and those who believe in the son? The answer is in two parts. First there is not reason to covenant with someone who feels that they need no repentance; that they are already were they need to be in a spiritual sense. Repentance requires huumility; subjection to a higher power and without that recognition one is not in a frame of mind to need anything? The second comes from the believeing in the son. All ordinances of the Gospel point to us believing in the power of the son. That the atonment can save us; that the resurrection is and was real; and that God can restore us. IF we do not have that belief then he does not have the power to save us - as such any covenants would be in vain as they are all based on the Savior being the son of God; as such he has the power to save us - if we do not believe that then there is no need to make any kind of covenant with God. ] who is the Holy One of Israel.
And now, I would prophesy somewhat more concerning the Jews and the Gentiles. For after the book [ spoken of in the previous chapters ] of which I have spoken shall come forth, and be written unto the Gentiles, and sealed up again unto the Lord, there shall be many which shall believe the words which are written; and they shall carry them forth unto the remnant of our seed.
And then shall the remnant of our seed know concerning us, how that we came out from Jerusalem, and that they are descendants of the Jews.
And the gospel of Jesus Christ shall be declared among them; wherefore, they shall be restored unto the knowledge of their fathers, [ If we go back far enough the knowledge of their fathers is/are the truths that Adam would have taught his children. Those truths were taught through all the generations from there down. Adam held all the truths, he taught them to his children, so this is the knowledge of the fathers. Many times we think that we have evolved in so many ways to be better than our forefathers. We think of them as living in a primitive society. We have cars, tractors, planes, cell phones, commerce - so many more things to make our life better. Well that may have been the case with some things, but it was not with gospel knowledge. Adam was there he lived it. Adam taught his children first hand, so we need to be careful that we think that we know so much. ] , and also to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, which was had among their fathers.
And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a pure [ "pure", the 1st Edition BofM said "white". The emendation was made in the 1981 edition BofM. The context is clearly one of figurative whiteness and not literal whiteness given the references to being blessed and shedding scales of darkness. ] and a delightsome people.
And it shall come to pass that the Jews which are scattered also shall begin to believe in Christ; and they shall begin to gather in upon the face of the land; and as many as shall believe in Christ shall also become a delightsome people.
And it shall come to pass that the Lord God [ Hebrew - Yahweh ( or Jehovah which means "to become" or "to exist") translated as Lord; Elohim translated as God ("the Gods") which together the words mean "He will cause Gods to be". ] shall commence his work among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people, to bring about the restoration of his people upon the earth.
And with righteousness shall the Lord God [ Hebrew - Yahweh ( or Jehovah which means "to become" or "to exist") translated as Lord; Elohim translated as God ("the Gods") which together the words mean "He will cause Gods to be". ] judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth. And he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth; and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
For the time speedily cometh that the Lord God [ Hebrew - Yahweh ( or Jehovah which means "to become" or "to exist") translated as Lord; Elohim translated as God ("the Gods") which together the words mean "He will cause Gods to be". ] shall cause a great division among the people, and the wicked will he destroy; and he will spare his people, yea, even if it so be that he must destroy the wicked by fire. [ Nephi quotes Isa. 11:4-9 to illustrate the final results of the Lord restoring Israel and accomplishing His work, namely the Day of the Lord (v. 9-11), which ushers in the "Millennium" (v. 12-15). Isa. 11 is quoted in full in ch. 21. ]
And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.
And then shall the wolf dwell with the lamb; and the leopard shall lie down with the kid, and the calf, and the young lion, and the fatling, together; and a little child shall lead them.
And the cow and the bear shall feed; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the cockatrice’s den.
They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
Wherefore, the things of all nations shall be made known; yea, all things shall be made known unto the children of men. [ Now Nephi expounds on the writings of Isaiah 11:9 stating that all of the revelations of the Lord to mankind will be made known during the Millennium 27:11, 29:12-14, D&C 88:108-109 ]
There is nothing which is secret save it shall be revealed; there is no work of darkness save it shall be made manifest in the light; and there is nothing which is sealed upon the earth save it shall be loosed.
Wherefore, all things which have been revealed unto the children of men shall at that day be revealed; [ The Lord is now free to reveal all things to his children because Satan is bound. See D&C 88:108 ] and Satan shall have power over the hearts of the children of men no more, for a long time. And now, my beloved brethren, I make an end of my sayings.
