CHAPTER 16
Jesus will visit others of the lost sheep of Israel—In the latter days the gospel will go to the Gentiles and then to the house of Israel—The Lord’s people shall see eye to eye when he brings again Zion. [A.D. 34]
AND verily, verily, I say unto you that I have other sheep, [ This would be the Lost ten tribes. Continuing from the Lords direction to the 12 apostles (3 Ne 15:11-24) see also John 10:16 More sheep than those in the America's more than those in the old world. Who are these other sheep? Islands of the sea, ten tribes... ] which are not of this land, [ Does he mean not of the Americas, not of the middle east or not on the earth? ] neither of the land of Jerusalem, neither in any parts of that land round about whither I have been to minister.
For they of whom I speak are they who have not as yet heard my voice; neither have I at any time manifested myself unto them. [ Or made a personal visitation like what he is doing with the Nephites right now. ]
But I have received a commandment of the Father that I shall go unto them, [ Well if he was commanded to go there then we can assume that he did. Won't it be interesting when we have their writings as well. ] and that they shall hear my voice, and shall be numbered among my sheep, that there may be one fold and one shepherd; therefore I go to show myself unto them.
And I command you that ye shall write these sayings after I am gone, that if it so be that my people at Jerusalem, [ The Jews. ] they who have seen me and been with me in my ministry, do not ask the Father in my name, that they may receive a knowledge of you [ The remnant of Joseph. ] by the Holy Ghost, and also of the other tribes [ The remnant of Jacob. ] whom they know not of, that these sayings which ye shall write shall be kept and shall be manifested unto the Gentiles, [ What is the definition of a Gentile? Literal meaning is 'of the same clan or race' various meanings include: Who was considered a Gentile to Ham and Shem the sons of Noah? 1) The descendants of Noah's son Japheth were called Gentiles (Gen 10:1-5) So the descendants of Ham and Shem were not Gentiles. Who would have been considered a Gentile in the days of Abraham? 2) In the days of Abraham the term was used to refer to those that had not descended from him - with the assurance that all Gentiles could be adopted into his literal seed, Abra. 2:9-11; Teachings pp 149-150 How about a few years later in ancient Israel, who would have been considered a Gentile? 3) In the days of ancient Israel those who were not descendants of Jacob were considered Gentiles. How about if you were to ask a jew who is considered a Gentile? 4) After the ten tribes were lead away into Assyrian captivity about 725 B.C. those of the Kingdom of Judah called themselves Jews and labeled all others as Gentiles. It is the definition that would have been taught to both Mulek and Lehi hence the Book of Mormon often marks the division of men as Jew and Gentile - ie United States as a Gentile nation 1 Ne. 13: 3 Ne. 21: The promise would come by way of the Gentile Mormon Doc pp 310-311; Book Of Mormon Student Manual Religion 121-122 pp 33 If you were to ask a Mormon today - who is a Gentile what would the answer be? Anyone who is not a member of the church. What is a Gentile for the purpose of this context? Most likely in this case those who are not Jews - a definition that would have been used by Lehi. ] that through the fulness of the Gentiles, the remnant of their seed, [ The Jews. ] who shall be scattered forth upon the face of the earth because of their unbelief, may be brought in, [ Be gathered. ] or may be brought to a knowledge of me, their Redeemer. [ Note that they are not converted to the Savior at this point just brought to a knowledge of him, as the Jews will be last to receive tha gospel in the latter days. They will not be converted until the Lord comes to liberate them just before their final extermination. At that point they will look upon him and realize who he really is and what they have done to him. As they ask what are these wounds in thy hands? See Zechariah 13:6. ]
And then will I gather [ Gather because they were scattered. ] them [ The Jews. ] in from the four quarters of the earth; and then will I fulfil the covenant which the Father hath made unto all the people of the house of Israel. [ What is the covenant that the Father made to the House of Israel? The Abrahamic covenant was renewed with Isaac and Jacob and their posterity (see Genesis 26:1–5; 35:9–12; Exodus 19:1–8). (also see Abraham 2:6–11 which include: Prophets; Scriptures; The gift of the Holy Ghost; Priesthood and priesthood ordinances/ ). ]
And blessed are the Gentiles, because of their belief in me, in and of the Holy Ghost, [ As Jesus will never manifest himself personally to the Gentiles he will send the Holy Spirit to testify of himself, cf. 15:23, 1 Ne. 10:11, 2 Ne. 26:13, John 15:26, John 16:7. ] which witnesses unto them of me and of the Father.
Behold, because of their belief in me, saith the Father, and because of the unbelief of you, O house of Israel, [ Referring to more than one of the groups of Israel since he is not specific to which group here ( Judah, Joseph or the lost tribes. ). ] in the latter day shall the truth come unto the Gentiles, [ In other words during the Saviors ministry he went first to the Jews then to the Gentile; during the latter days the gospel will go first to the Gentiles then to the Jews. The first shall be last and then last shall be first. ] that the fulness of these things shall be made known unto them.
But wo, saith the Father, unto the unbelieving of the Gentiles—for notwithstanding they [ The Gentiles. ] have come forth upon the face of this land, [ The Americas. ] and have scattered my people who are of the house of Israel; [ Manessah. ] and my people who are of the house of Israel have been cast out from among them, [ Indian reservations. ] and have been trodden under feet by them; [ The scattering and abuse the remnants of Lehi suffer at the hands of the Gentiles was considerable.  First the Spanish and Portugese, Conquistadores predominantly in south and Central America then the post-Colonial era expansion into Western North America.  Even to this day the descendants of the native Indians generally suffer at the hands of the descendants of the European immigrants. ]
And because of the mercies of the Father unto the Gentiles, and also the judgments of the Father upon my people who are of the house of Israel, verily, verily, I say unto you, that after all this, and I have caused my people who are of the house of Israel to be smitten, and to be afflicted, and to be slain, and to be cast out from among them, and to become hated by them, and to become a hiss and a byword among them—
And thus commandeth the Father that I should say unto you: At that day when the Gentiles shall sin against my gospel, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, [ A reversal of vs 7 Now the gentiles are the ones who start to reject the gospel. Reflecting on Enos' allegory of the olive tree in Jacob 5 we will recall there was a gradual grafting in of the natural tame branches concurrent with a gradual removal of the wild branches which had gone bad (cf. Jacob 5:65-74). Joseph Smith was instructed early on to preach to the remnants of Lehi (D&C 3:18-20, D&C10:45-55, D&C 28:8)] and shall be lifted up in the pride of their hearts above all nations, [ Directed at the Gentiles in America, and to some degree the members of the Church. What was one of the most memorable messages given by President Benson? It was a message on pride. ] and above all the people of the whole earth, and shall be filled with all manner of lyings, and of deceits, and of mischiefs, and all manner of hypocrisy, and murders, and priestcrafts, and whoredoms, and of secret abominations; and if they shall do all those things, and shall reject the fulness of my gospel, behold, saith the Father, I will bring the fulness of my gospel from among them. [ Orson Pratt said in Vol 18:21 of the Journal or Discourses "...when the Gentile nations shall reject this Gospel, and count themsleves unworthy of eternal life, as the Jews did before them, the Lord will say - "it is enough, come away, come away from them, my servants, I will give you a new commission, you shall go to the scattered remnants of the house of Israel..."" and Joseph Fielding Smith said in Apr 1911 "when the time comes that the nations will cast the elders out, and no longer receive their testimony, but bow to satan's thrall,...woe be unto them. When they...will listen to the unrighteous and condemn the truth, then God will withdraw the gospel from among them. In that day the times of the Gentiles will be fulfilled..." These will ne the signs that we will have that the times of the Gentiles have been fulfilled. ]
And then will I remember my covenant which I have made unto my people, [ Those who have accepted him, entered into a covenant with him. ] O house of Israel, and I will bring my gospel unto them.
And I will show unto thee, O house of Israel, that the Gentiles [ The enemies of God in this case. ] shall not have power over you; but I will remember my covenant unto you, O house of Israel, and ye shall come unto the knowledge of the fulness of my gospel.
But if the Gentiles will repent and return [ One cannot return to a place were he has not been – Why did the Pilgrams come to america? So they could worship God. It was a humble desire, “God will have a humble people. Either we can choose to be humble or we can be compelled to be humble” President Benson April Conf 1989 Remember that the Prophet is the Prophet for the Church as well as the entire world (America in specific here). ] unto me, saith the Father, behold they shall be numbered among my people, O house of Israel.
And I will not suffer my people, who are of the house of Israel, to go through among them, and tread them down, [ Just as the Gentiles did to Israel in v.8. The scattered (v. 8) become the scatterers (v. 15) when they repent and return to the Lord. ] saith the Father.
But if they will not turn unto me, and hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] unto my voice, I will suffer them, yea, I will suffer my people, O house of Israel, that they shall go through among them, and shall tread them down, and they shall be as salt that hath lost its savor, [ A fulfilment of 12:13, implying deliberate apostasy on the part of the Gentiles. ] which is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of my people, [ Beaten down to the end degree. What will happen to America if we do not repent and return unto him? see D&C 112:24-26. ] O house of Israel. [ Which tribe from the house of Israel would even have enough power to do so? The only one that I can think of would be the ten tribes which if they have multiplied like the other tribes they should number somewhere around 200 million plus. Isaiah tell us that thise shall be done by a remnant of the house of Jacob. ]
Verily, verily, I say unto you, thus hath the Father commanded me—that I should give unto this people [ Manassah. ] this land for their inheritance. [ The Americas. The Father has told Jesus that this land is for the inheritance of the remnants of Lehi. When they ultimately inherit it is when, in part, Isaiah's prediction of Zion will be fulfilled (v. 17-20). ]

And then the words of the prophet Isaiah shall be fulfilled, [ Notice how the Lord is teaching here - he is using the scriptures, and who is he quoting? Isaiah- Does the fact that the Lord himself quotes Isaiah have any bearing on the fact that we should read and understand Isaiah? When all of the previous items have been completed…the check list above; 1) Israel needs to be gathered 2) The Nephite records shared among other parts of the house of Israel - then he will fulfill the words of Isaiah outlined in the next 3 verses. ] which say:

[ The Savior Quotes 3 verses from from Chapter 52:8-10 of Isaiah The Lord loves to quote Isaiah - duality of meanings not casting the pearl before the swine? ]

Thy watchmen [ Referring to the watchman of Joseph. ] shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing, for they [ The leaders of the church along with those who come as the watchman of the house of Israel. ] shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion.
Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. [ In the Isaiah quote the primary contextual reading is that of ancient Jerusalem being redeemed and reestablished as Zion. However, in the present usage, Jesus is referring to the establishment of a new Jerusalem in the New World, another Zion, cf. 20:22. ]

The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of God. < [ This will be a big event and everyone will recognize that it is happening. ]

[ The Lord made the covenants with Abraham , then the law of Moses was given, The law of Moses was fulfilled first and the Covenants with Abraham are still yet to be fulfilled. Hence the first shall be last and the last shall be first. The Law was fulfilled with his first coming, the covenant will be fulfilled at his second coming. Jesus was able to fulfill the law by himself. He is not able to fulfill the covenant by himself – a covenant is between 2 parties. So he needs help to fulfill the covenant. At this point the Savior was about ready to give the Nephites further instruction on what they must do to fulfill the covenant…BUT…they are not ready…sound familiar? ]
