CHAPTER 18
Jesus institutes the sacrament among the Nephites—They are commanded to pray always in his name—Those who eat his flesh and drink his blood unworthily are damned—The disciples are given power to confer the Holy Ghost. [A.D. 34]
 AND it came to pass that Jesus commanded his Disciples that they should bring forth some bread and wine unto him.
 And while they were gone for bread and wine, he commanded the multitude that they should sit themselves down upon the earth. [ We recall that Jesus has the people rise in the previous chapter 17:19. They can now sit down as he is through blessing their little children so there is less commotion now and they can sit back down to rest. ]
 And when the Disciples had come with bread and wine, he took of the bread and brake and blessed it; and he gave unto the Disciples and commanded that they should eat.
And when they had eaten and were filled, [ Since there is no specific reference to the spirit we might conclude that it was a physical filling, or both. The Holy Ghost is not mentioned until verse 7 and then there is no connection given to being filled. ] he commanded that they should give unto the multitude.
 And when the multitude had eaten and were filled, [ Did they eat more than just the piece of bread that we normally have? Was this a meal for them after all they would have been hungry? Or does this only imply that they were spiritually filled? Was this akin to Jesus feeding the multitude where he had compassion on them in Matt 14:14-21? How well would the people have received the message of being spiritually filled through the sacrament if they were both hungry and were filled both spiritually and physically during their first. ] he said unto the Disciples: Behold there shall one be ordained among you, and to him will I give power that he shall break bread and bless it and give it unto the people of my church, [ Mine elect, my people are those that hear my voice and harden not their hearts D&C 29:7 that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem. Moses 7:62 - among my people who do repent and are baptized in my name - 3 Nephi 18:16 it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel - 3 Nephi 27:8 for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do 3 Nephi 27:21. ] unto all those who shall believe and be baptized in my name.
 And this shall ye always observe to do, even as I have done, even as I have broken bread and blessed it and given it unto you. [ Remember there are around 2500 people here. So if the people were filled with bread then the apostles would not have been able to both procure that much bread and or to carry that much bread for such a large gathering - So we can conclude that if they were physically filled with the bread that some miracle took place as is found in Matt 14:14-21. ]
And this [ Break the bread and bless it as an emblem of the sacrament. ] shall ye do in remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you. [ They have seen the resurrected Savior. So they are to remember his body and what it stands for. That he lived and that he still lives, that he was resurrected and has power over death, that his hands have the scars of the pain that he bore on the cross as he completed the atonement for you and I. ] And it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember me. [ So in the blessing and breaking the bread we are in a way testifying to Heavenly Father that we do remember Jesus Christ. ] And if ye do always remember me [ So what does he mean to always remember me? ] ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.
 And it came to pass that when he said these words, he commanded his Disciples that they should take of the wine of the cup and drink of it, and that they should also give unto the multitude that they might drink of it.
 And it came to pass that they did so, and did drink of it and were filled; and they gave unto the multitude, and they did drink, and they were filled.
 And when the Disciples had done this, Jesus said unto them: Blessed are ye for this thing which ye have done, for this is fulfilling my commandments, and this doth witness unto the Father that ye are willing to do that which I have commanded you.
 And this shall ye always do to those who repent and are baptized in my name; and ye shall do it in remembrance of my blood, which I have shed for you, that ye may witness unto the Father that ye do always remember me. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.
 And I give unto you a commandment that ye shall do these things. [ Bless the bread and the wine to remember me each week. (The Sacrament) ] And if ye shall always do these things blessed are ye, for ye are built upon my rock. [ So commandment #1 from the Savior is to keep and partake of the sacrament each week. ]
 But whoso among you shall do more or less than these are not built upon my rock, [ As in 4 Ne 1:27. ] but are built upon a sandy foundation; and when the rain descends, and the floods come, and the winds blow, and beat upon them, they shall fall, and the gates of hell are ready open to receive them.
 Therefore blessed are ye if ye shall keep my commandments, which the Father hath commanded me that I should give unto you.
 Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him. [ Command number 2 pray often and wach your self; check your self that you are on the right way otherwise Satan will quickly trip you up. ]
 And as I have prayed among you even so shall ye pray in my church, [Mine elect, my people are those that hear my voice and harden not their hearts D&C 29:7 that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem. ] among my people who do repent and are baptized [ Command number 3 from the Savior - that we are to repent and to be baptized. ] in my name. Behold I am the light; I have set an example for you. [ see D&C 88: 6-7. ]
 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto his Disciples, he turned again unto the multitude and said unto them:
 Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, [ A warning against pride Alma 32:5; 4 Ne 1:26. ] that he may sift you as wheat.
 Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name;
 And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, [ Compare to Moroni 7:26 “which is good” so what ever we ask that is both right and good What are some things that are good and right, some things that we can and ot to seek after? Have health of body and vigor of mind, become a gospel scholar, attain scholastic achievements, acquire proper employment, be preserved in war or other perilous circumstances, serve God and our fellowmen thru church calls, find a proper husband or wife, receive and rear children in righteousness, enjoy spiritual embraces and the gifts of revealed religion , work miracles, gain salvation. ] believing that ye shall receive, [ Acquiring enough power, which power is called faith by definition. ] behold it shall be given unto you. [ God has promised, immutably declared in the heavens that we be able to achieve. ]
  Pray in your families [ Who is the Savior speaking to here? He is speaking to the Fathers in the homes. He does not say if you feel good about it, if you have time; no he just flat out gives the commandment. ] unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed.
 And behold, ye shall meet together oft; and ye shall not forbid any man from coming unto you when ye shall meet together, but suffer them that they may come unto you and forbid them not;
 But ye shall pray for them, and shall not cast them out; and if it so be that they come unto you oft ye shall pray for them unto the Father, in my name.
 Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up—that which ye have seen me do. Behold ye see that I have prayed unto the Father, and ye all have witnessed.
 And ye see that I have commanded that none of you should go away, but rather have commanded that ye should come unto me, that ye might feel and see; even so shall ye do unto the world; and whosoever breaketh this commandment suffereth himself to be led into temptation.
 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words, he turned his eyes again upon the Disciples whom he had chosen, and said unto them:
 Behold verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you another commandment, and then I must go unto my Father that I may fulfil other commandments which he hath given me.
 And now behold, this is the commandment which I give unto you, that ye shall not suffer any one knowingly to partake of my flesh and blood unworthily, when ye shall minister it;
 For whoso eateth and drinketh my flesh and blood unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul; therefore if ye know that a man is unworthy to eat and drink of my flesh and blood ye shall forbid him.
 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out from among you, but ye shall minister unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father, in my name; and if it so be that he repenteth and is baptized in my name, then shall ye receive him, and shall minister unto him of my flesh and blood.
 But if he repent not he shall not be numbered among my people, that he may not destroy my people, for behold I know my sheep, and they are numbered. [ Meaning that not one single sheep that belongs to him will be lost. None. ]
 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out of your synagogues, or your places of worship, for unto such shall ye continue to minister; for ye know not but what they will return and repent, and come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I shall heal them; and ye shall be the means of bringing salvation unto them.
 Therefore, keep these sayings which I have commanded you that ye come not under condemnation; for wo unto him whom the Father condemneth.
 And I give you these commandments because of the disputations which have been among you. And blessed are ye if ye have no disputations among you.
 And now I go unto the Father, because it is expedient that I should go unto the Father for your sakes.
 And it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of these sayings, he touched with his hand [ Laying on of hands. Moroni will further clarify what he meant in Moroni 2:1. ] the Disciples whom he had chosen, one by one, even until he had touched them all, and spake unto them as he touched them.
 And the multitude heard not the words which he spake, therefore they did not bear record; but the Disciples bare record that he gave them power to give the Holy Ghost. And I will show unto you hereafter that this record is true. [ Mormon's statement that Jesus had given his twelve disciples "power to give the Holy Ghost." He added, "I will show unto you hereafter that this record is true." In the next chapter, verse thirteen, he described how the Holy Ghost fell on the twelve after their baptism. Then at 4 Nephi 1:1, he wrote that those baptized by the twelve "did also receive the Holy Ghost." Further consistency was shown in Moroni's later quotation of Christ's words to the twelve, which Mormon had left out in 3 Nephi 18 where they logically might have been given: "Ye shall have power that to him upon whom ye shall lay your hands, ye shall give the Holy Ghost" (Moroni 2:2). He then added, "On as many as they laid their hands, fell the Holy Ghost" (v. 3). The reporting of the matter involved two prophets and four distinct passages of scripture, but eventually nothing was left out of the story. How could Joseph Smith have known? Or done this without the help of a computer, notes or the fact that he was indeed translating? An author may promise in the course of writing to return to a subject later to supply further details. Actually keeping such a promise can prove difficult. Even with modern writing aids, memory can betray a person into failing to tuck in the corners of plot or information. Mormon, the editor of much of the Book of Mormon as we have it, made these types of promises at least seven times. In each case, he or his son Moroni followed through perfectly..(The Maxwell Institute - Mormon's Editorial Promises John A. Tvedtnes) ]
 And it came to pass that when Jesus had touched them all, there came a cloud [ The presence or Spirit of God is commonly characterized by the presence of a cloud, cf. Exod. 13:21, Exod. 19:9, Num. 11:25, Isa. 6:4. ] and overshadowed the multitude that they could not see Jesus. [ While the crowd could net see the disciples did witness it. ]
 And while they [ The multitude. ] were overshadowed he departed from them, and ascended into heaven. And the Disciples saw and did bear record that he ascended again into heaven. [ We have the disciples as a witness that he did ascend into heaven. This is the role of a disciple to be a special witness of Jesus Christ. Almost every use of the word "disciple" in the Book Of Mormon has to deal with a member of the quorum of 12 apostles. ]
