CHAPTER 23
Jesus approves the words of Isaiah—He commands the people to search the prophets—The words of Samuel the Lamanite concerning the resurrection are added to their records. [A.D. 34]
1 AND now, behold, I say unto you, that
ye ought to search these
things. Yea, a commandment I give unto you that ye search
these things diligently; for great are the words of Isaiah.
[ The Savior is saying that if we want to know when he is coming again search
the words of Isaiah for when they are fulfilled then the covenant will be fulfilled. ]
2 For surely he spake as touching all things concerning my people which are of the house of Israel;.
[ Here then is a key to understanding Isaiah. Isaiah writes things that have been, or things
about the house of Israel, starting with the house of Israel in the premortal existence, and in this life with
Abraham and Sarah. He also writes about "things" that "shall be", or "things" that will happen to
the House of Israel until the end. If he speaks about the House of Israel, Jesus says he must of
necessity "speak also to the gentiles." ] therefore it must needs be that he must speak also to the Gentiles.
4 Therefore give heed to my words; write the things which I have told you; [ This is good advice for those of old but is also of great advice to us in our day. As we are taught by the spirit we need to write that down as well. ] and according to the time and the will of the Father they shall go forth unto the Gentiles.
5 And whosoever will hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] unto my words and repenteth and is baptized, the same shall be saved. Search the prophets, [ The writing of the old testament prophets in this case as the Savior has been quoting both Isaiah and Micah in the past few chapter quite extensively. ] for many there be that testify of these things.
6 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had said these words he said unto them again, after he had expounded all the scriptures unto them which they had received, he said unto them: Behold, other scriptures I would that ye should write, that ye have not. [ It appears then that there was other parts of scripture that were not written down; The Savior then teaches the people what they are and expounds upon them. After giving them these scriptures, he continues on teaching, cf. 26:1. Thus, it would appear the text from 24:6-26:2 are all a continuation of Jesus' teaching from ch. 20-23 without any real interruption. But, Mormon abridges out a considerable amount of material in 24:6-26:2 and only keeps the two sections of text which Jesus explicitly stated must go to future generations, cf. 26:6-8. so, while ch. 20-23 are extremely detailed recounting of Jesus' teachings, ch. 24-25 are extremely selective recounting of Jesus teachings per 26:2 and 26:6-9. Mormon apparently summarizes the material he omitted in 26:3-5. ]
7 And it came to pass that he said unto Nephi: Bring forth the record which ye have kept. [ Seems to indicate that Jesus was not reading the Nephite records but was simply leading a discussion. During that discussion he brought up the point that their written record was lacking. ]
8 And when Nephi had brought forth the records, and laid them before him, he cast his eyes upon them and said: [ Would seem to indicate he didn't search through them to with any great detail; however he knew what was missing, and he wanted the record before him to make a point. That this information was not contained therein. ]
9 Verily I say unto you, I commanded my servant Samuel, the Lamanite, that he should testify unto this people, that at the day that the Father should glorify his name in me that there were many saints who should arise from the dead, and should appear unto many, and should minister unto them. And he said unto them: Was it not so? [ Do you not recall that Samuel the Lamanite said that when the Savior was to return as commanded by the Father that there would be many who would be resurrected with him? Did this not happen - I ask you? Was that prophecy not fulfilled? ]
10 And his disciples answered him and said: Yea, Lord, Samuel did prophesy according to thy words, and they were all fulfilled.
[ Nephi responds yes that prophecy of Samuel was all fulfilled. ]
11 And Jesus said unto them: How be it that ye have not written this thing, that many saints did arise and appear unto many and did minister unto them? [ so he is asking why did they not write about this prophecy from Samuel? See Hel 14:25 Now were do we have record even now that there were saints that arose when the Savior came? Are they the angels found in 17:24-25 and 19:14-15 are in fact resurrected beings (cf. D&C 129:1). If this is the case, then they were seen by many people as predicted. The potential problem with this is the prediction by Samuel (cf. Hela 14:25) and the statement by Jesus in this verse that the resurrected people should be seen "at the day that the Father should glorify his name in me", suggesting the day of his resurrection, and not about a year later when the angels of 17:24-25 and 19:14-15 are seen by the multitudes.]
