CHAPTER 29
The coming forth of the Book of Mormon is a sign that the Lord has commenced to gather Israel and fulfill his covenants—Those who reject his latter-day revelations and gifts shall be cursed. [Between A.D. 34 and 35]
1 AND now behold, I say unto you that when the Lord shall see fit, in his wisdom, that these sayings shall come unto the Gentiles according to his word, then ye may know that the covenant which the Father hath made with the children of Israel, concerning their restoration to the lands of their inheritance, is already beginning to be fulfilled. [ When these words come forth again it will be a sign that the gathering of Israel has begun. See prophecy found in 3 Ne 21:1-7 ]
2 And ye may know that the words of the Lord, which have been spoken by the holy prophets, shall all be fulfilled; [ See also 3 Ne 21:8-21 ] and ye need not say that the Lord delays his coming unto the children of Israel.
3 And ye need not imagine in your hearts that the words which have been spoken are vain, [ Don't get caught up in thinking they will not happen or that they are just words. ] for behold, the Lord will remember his covenant which he hath made unto his people of the house of Israel. [ see 3 Ne 21:26-29]
4 And when ye shall see these sayings coming forth among you, then ye need not any longer spurn [ Spurn means “to reject with disdain” and hiss is “to express contempt or disapprobation by hissing”. The use of such terms suggests that in the time of the coming forth of the Book of Mormon there will be a pronounced lack of understanding, belief, and reverence for both the reality of the Second Coming and the work of the Lord in gathering Israel (especially the tribe of Judah).] at the doings of the Lord, for the sword of his justice is in his right hand; and behold, at that day, if ye shall spurn at his doings he will cause that it shall soon overtake you.
5 Wo unto him that spurneth [ 1. To reject with disdain; to scorn to receive or accept; 2. To treat with contempt. SPURN, verb intransitive 1. To manifest disdain in rejecting any thing; as, to spurn at the gracious offers of pardon; 2. To make contemptuous opposition; to manifest disdain in resistance. ] at the doings of the Lord; yea, wo unto him that shall deny the Christ and his works! [ Elder Jeffery R Holland stated "the role the Book of Mormon plays in the fulfilling of God’s covenant with respect to Israel: “Mormon concluded his description of this majestic season [the visit of the Savior among the Nephites] . . . by testifying that when a record of [ Jesus Christ’s] visit would come to the Gentiles (in the form of the Book of Mormon), then all might know that the covenant and promises to Israel of the last days were ‘already beginning to be fulfilled.’ . . . “God’s covenant will be kept with all of his covenant people. No one will be able to ‘turn the right hand of the Lord unto the left’ on this matter. And the call to the Gentiles, for which Christ’s visit to the Nephites published in the Book of Mormon is the ultimate latter-day declaration, is for them to claim the same covenant and promises” (Christ and the New Covenant [1997], 308). ]
6 Yea, wo unto him that shall deny the revelations of the Lord, and that shall say the Lord no longer worketh by revelation, or by prophecy, or by gifts, or by tongues, or by healings, or by the power of the Holy Ghost! [ And why will they say that? 1) Because they deny Christ vs 5 2) Because they deny the hand of God, they refuss to look for it or to see the hand of God. 3) Because they have sold out for personal gain just as Satan did in heaven. Because they do not want to believe it, because they do not want to repent. Because they do not want to be held accountable to God - So they wish it away - NOT going to happen. ]
7 Yea, and wo unto him that shall say at that day, to get gain, that there can be no miracle wrought by Jesus Christ; for he that doeth this shall become like unto the son of perdition, for whom there was no mercy, according to the word of Christ!
8 Yea, and ye need not any longer hiss, nor spurn, nor make game of the Jews, nor any of the remnant of the house of Israel; for behold, the Lord remembereth his covenant unto them, and he will do unto them according to that which he hath sworn.
Therefore ye need not suppose that ye can turn the right hand of the Lord unto the left, [ Don't think for a second that you can stop the hand of God from fulfilling his promises - if he did he would cease to be God. Suggesting also that reminding all people that in spite of all the great blessings, unfaithfulness will lead to destruction. ] that he may not execute judgment unto the fulfilling of the covenant which he hath made unto the house of Israel. [ As indicated in v. 4-7, the Gentile nations are committing all the same sins Israel has committed over the years: secularism, materialism, priestcraft, and rebellion. But, in addition to this, the Gentiles have persecuted Israel. The result is the Lord will not spare them, cp. Ezek. 35:1-5. While the Gentiles haven't gotten any worse than Israel, they have no covenant to protect them when they do go bad. The underlying premise is that of the times of the Gentiles (cf. Acts 10, D&C 45:24-30). The gospel has been granted to them because of Israel's apostasy and Judah's intransigence. But, rather than redeem Israel, the majority of them have used it to promote themselves at Israel's expense. The Gentiles have grown arrogant in obtaining the gospel, so they think it is their's by right and Israel be damned. However, that is not the Lord's attitude. He remembers His covenant with Israel, and will redeem them as He promised He would, without or without the help of the Gentiles.]
