THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES
CHAPTER 2
Spirit poured out on day of Pentecost—Peter testifies of Jesus’ resurrection—He tells how to gain salvation and speaks of the gift of the Holy Ghost—Many believe and are baptized.
AND when the day of Pentecost [ Pentecost means 50 days after something. So 50 days from Easter(resurrection) morning. For the Jews this would have been Shavuot the festival of the harvest. Shavuot(The Feast of Weeks/Pentecost) is the second harvest festival and is celebrated 50 days after Pesach. It commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. ] was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. [ They were all gathered together. ]
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, [ In Hebrew: the same word as wind is also translated as breathe as well as spirit. A new creation is taking place as when the winds blew upon the waters during the creation. The chaos that the disciples may have had was moved upon with purpose, things were being formed by God in their behalf. ] , and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. [ Or the spirit of the Holy Ghost moved upon them in a way that never did when they were in the presence of the Savior. ]
And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Now when this was noised abroad, [ So people came from a wide area, and most likely came speaking different languages. ] the multitude came together, and were confounded, [ They could not believe what was happening. ] because that every man heard them speak in his own language. [ Why? because every person heard what was being taught was taught in their own language. ]
And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, [ The list goes on but I think that the details of laying each one out suggests that God is blessing people at the individual level. This is an exact opposite of what happened at the tower of Babel, the diversification of language brought about disruption, here all hearing it at the same time in their own language would bring forth unity. Will this not help spread the word as all of these people go back to their homes. ]
Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this?
Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. [ These apostles are just gone too far, since they have no answer they assume the worst, they most likely do not believe in God so they just make fun of what they do not know. ]
¶ But Peter, standing up with the eleven, [ This is the day of pentecost when Gods spirit is poured out. ] lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] to my words:
For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. [ It is 9 am - it is too early to be drunk. ]
But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; [ Peter teaches from the scriptures again quoting Joel. ]
And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: [ This is usually referenced in conjunction with the activity of the last days, but here Peter suggests that this is one of the ways in which we can see the hand of God at work. Joseph fielding Smith said that this has reference to the Light Of Christ. ]
And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: [ Peter could have stopped earlier when quoting from Joel, but he does not he continues to bring about those things that he was taught, he preaches of thise things that he learned from Jesus on the mount of olives when Jesus taught the disciples of the signs of the times before the second coming. Peter also knew that we were not at the second coming yet as the two angels had to him so when he asked back in Acts 1:10. So the teaching here is to help those gathered to understand the bigger picture of what is going on. ]
And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, [ Peter brings Jesus tp the front and give him credit for all that he has done. ] which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
Him, [ Jesus Christ. ] being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, [ What happened to him (Jesus) was all part of Gods plan. ] ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: [ Part of the plan to have one who is sinless suffer the sins for all mankind. The atonement. ]
Whom God hath raised up, [ Yes he let him give his life for us but that is not the end, becaus he yet lives, he was raised form the dead. ] having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
For David speaketh concerning him, [ Jesus. ] I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, [ JST "thou wilt not leave my soul in prison." ] neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; [ Peter is quoting David from the 16th Psalm. ] thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.
Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.
Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; [ This was his purpose to overcome death for all mankind. ]
He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Until I make thy foes thy footstool. [ 110th Psalm. ]
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
¶ Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? [ What a wonderful question. I suppose that there may have been a little looking back when this was said. After all in a way they had missed the Messiah, they were not fully there in their understanding of him while they walked with him. Their hearts were indeed pricked that they had not taken every advantage of the opportunities that were before them at the time. are we like that today? ]
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, [ Peter continues his preaching of what he was taught by the Savior - repent, change our ways. In a way I suppose that this answers the question is the previous verse. If you missed the opportunity to walk with Christ it is not too late. Repent and come unto him, for that it is not too late. ] and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, [ It is through the taking on ourselves the name of Christ that the atonement is applied, and it is through the grace offered through the atonement that our sins are remitted or paid up. ] and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. [ If you will repent and come unto Christ you will receive the Holy Ghost which os a remarkable experience on its own - as we have just experienced. ]
For the promise is unto you, [ It is made to everyone who will come forward. ] and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
And with many other words did he testify and exhort, [ Provided direction and encouragement to move forward. ] saying, Save yourselves [ The exhortation was too save yourself first, to repent , to change, to come unto Christ yourself then bring your children, your family, then your friends, and then later everyone unto Christ. ] from this untoward generation.
¶ Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.
And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, [ The gospel. Doctrine the teachings, fellowship the social side of the gospel. ] and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need. [ They became one, one heart one mind. They really came to love each other as they became united. ]
And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart, [ They where focused on giving thanks to God for all that they had. ]
Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
