DANIEL
CHAPTER 9
Daniel fasts, confesses, and prays for all Israel—Gabriel reveals time of the coming of the Messiah who shall make reconciliation for iniquity—Messiah shall be cut off.
 IN the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, [ So what year did Darius become King? 522 BC. ] of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;
 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, [ So at this point Daniel prays for Judah because he knows that "the time of captivity was over" and he could ask the new king that they could return and build the new temple. ] whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. [ The Prophet Jeremiah was instructed previously by the Lord that Judah would be held captive for 70 years and Daniel has been counting the years and recognizes that the time is up. ]
 ¶ And I set my face unto the Lord God, [ Hebrew - Yahweh ( or Jehovah which means "to become" or "to exist") translated as Lord; Elohim translated as God ("the Gods") which together the words mean "He will cause Gods to be". ] , to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;
 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.
 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.
 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
 ¶ O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.
 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.
 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
 ¶ And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;
 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, [ Noah per TPJS 157. ] , whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
 And he informed me, and talked with me, [ Daniel has been asking a question pf the Lord - which is : “When will the Jews be allowed to go back to Jerusalem?” Jeremiah had prophesied that their exile would last 70 years and then they would return (Jer. 25:11). Daniel petitions the Lord in a beautiful example of contrition and repentance, a pattern that we should all emulate. Gabriel responds by saying that the Jews still needed a little time to finish repentance while in exile. He then reveals the remarkable vision of the Seventy Weeks. This vision lays out the timeframe for when they would be allowed to return and build the temple and the city. It also prophesies of the mission of the Messiah and the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans. One aspect that makes this prophecy so remarkable is the preciseness in the prophetic timing. Gabriel reveals events almost to the very day of their fulfillment. ] and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
  Seventy weeks are determined [ So less than two years if it would have meant actual 70 weeks. It did not happen in their lifetime So we need to move on and try to understand the meaning for the seventy weeks. So look at verse 25. ] upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, [ This took place at the destruction of the second temple during Jesus's time. ] and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation [ Reconciliation comes from Latin roots re, meaning “again”; con, meaning “with”; and sella, meaning “seat.” Reconciliation, therefore, literally means “to sit again with.” So here we have Gabriel revealing the time of the coming of the Messiah, who at that time will make a reconciliation for iniquity. ] for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem [ So this would be the starting point. So the starting point is not when Daniel receives this prophecy but it is when the decree is issued to rebuild Jerusalem. See Nehemiah 2:1,5. So the date is Passover in the year 445 B.C. ] unto the Messiah [ The only time that the word or title of Messiah is used in the bible is is this verse and the next verse. The title is only found 2 times in the bible. It is found 26 times in the Book of Mormon. ] the Prince shall be seven weeks, [ 49 years. ] , and threescore and two weeks: [ Or 69 weeks. So if we want to know the exact day we need to look at the last day of the 68th week. Every day of the week represents a year so 68 x 7 = 476 So if we started in 445 - 476 = -31 if we cross over the B.c. period to the A.D. period there is no 0 year it starts in 1 A.D so we need to subtract 1 so the final result would be 30 A.D. in the month of Nisan. April 6th the Birth date of the Savior would be in the month of Nisan. Christ began his mission when he turned 30 years old. So Israel began to see the Messiah acting as the Messiah in 30 A.D. ] : the street shall be built again, and the wall, [ In spring of 1535 Suleiman the Magnificent decreed that the Jerusalem wall will be rebuilt. Reconstruction began in 1537 and lasted until 1541. ] , even in troublous times. [ Jodi Stoddard suggests that Israel became a nation in 1948, and that seven weeks and three score and two weeks: should be counted as 69 years. So if we use the 70th year of Israel becoming a nation what can we see? Jerusalem is recognized as her Capitol on May 14, 2018 we moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem. 70 years to the day since Israel became a nation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3yngnQAtDw marker 30:21. ]
 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, [ So by the end of the 69th week or 37 A.D Christ will be dead. ] but not for himself: [ Not because of anything that he did that would justify him being put to death. ] and the people of the prince [ ] that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
 And he [ Jesus Christ. ] shall confirm the covenant [ Is this not what Jesus taught the people (the new testament) that he was there to fulfill the covenant that God had made with their fathers? So this prophecy is referring to Christ and his coming the first time. ] with many [ ] for one week: [ One week or 7 Years. ] and in the midst of the week[ Midst or middle which would be 34 A.D. the Law of Moses is fulfilled. ] he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, [ Therefore there is no further need for sacrifice, as Christ has come to fulfill the law. ] , and for the overspreading of abominations[ ] he shall make it [ The Temple? ] desolate, even until the consummation, [ The end of this 70 week or 490 year period, after Christ has been cut off. Which is when the Romans came in an took over. ] , and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
