THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
SECTION 38

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Fayette, New York, January 2, 1831. HC 1: 140—143. The occasion was a conference of the Church.

[ Some of the members were concerned and had their doubts about moving to Ohio as commanded in section 37. So they asked the Prophet to inquire of the Lord for further information as section 37 was kind of vague as to why. This revelation is designed to address those concerns - specifically those that are not willing to leave are addressed in verse 6-12, with their reasoning discussed in verses 14-27. ]

—6, Christ created all things; 7—8, He is in the midst of his saints, who shall soon see him; 9—12, All flesh is corrupted before him; 13—22, He has reserved a land of promise for his saints in time and in eternity; 23—27, The saints are commanded to be one and esteem each other as brethren; 28—29, Wars are predicted; 30—33, The saints are to be given power from on high and go forth among all nations; 34—42, The Church is commanded to care for the poor and needy, and to seek the riches of eternity.
 THUS saith the Lord your God, even Jesus [ The Oxford English Dictionary on Historical Principles (Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1933), tells us that the word Jesus came into the English language from Middle English, adapted from the Latin Iesus, which in turn was adapted from the Greek Iesous. This in turn was adapted from the Hebrew or Aramaic word Yeshua or Yehoshua. The earlier root was Joshua. This dictionary goes on to explain that the word Joshua derived from the Jah of Jahveh, meaning that “Jehovah is salvation.” Thus, the word “Jesus” has parallel meaning with Savior. Webster’s New 20th Century Dictionary of the English Language (Cleveland: World Publishing Co., 1968), unabridged, sets forth a comparable definition, noting that the Latin-Greek derivation from the Hebrew Joshua means literally, “help of Jehovah.” But in addition, this source states that the word derives from the Hebrew word for Lord God, he who is available to help, to save. In this sense, then, the word Jesus means simply, “God is help.” How “Save the Humans,” as the bumper sticker read? The dictionaries and the gospel give the answer. ] Christ, [ What of the word Christ? It also comes to the English-speaking world from Middle English, derived from the Latin Christus, in turn from the Greek Christos, which meant “the Anointed”—a noun made from the past participle of the Greek verb “to anoint”. Webster also states that the word Christ was originally Jesus’ title. Thus, proper usage of the two words in English would be as Elder James E. Talmage titled his book, Jesus the Christ. Usage and revelation have joined the two as part of a sacred, revered name. Elder Talmage defined the two words as follows: “Jesus is the individual name of the Savior, and as thus spelled is of Greek derivation. … In the original the name was well understood as meaning ‘Help of Jehovah,’ or, ‘Savior.’” Elder Talmage emphasized that the word Christ is a sacred title, not “an ordinary … common name; it is of Greek derivation, and … is identical with its Hebrew equivalent Messiah …, signifying the Anointed One.” (Jesus the Christ, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1973, pp. 35–36.) ] the Great I AM, [ It is often translated as "I will be" (or "I shall be"). I AM is the first person or singular form of the verb "to be". Usage denotes that God is a personal living being who labors in behalf of Israel and who will fulfill all of the promises made to the fathers Abraham, Jacob. It conveys the idea that God is unchanging, everliving and true to his word. The ancient Hebrew of Exodus 3:14 lacks a future tense as modern English does, yet a few translations render this name as "I Will Be What I Will Be", given the context of Yahweh promising to be with his people through their future troubles. The Septuagint, egw eimi o wn, I am he who exists. As if to say - "I AM He who spake, and the world was; I AM he who spake, and all things existed." “The Hebrew, Ehyeh, signifying I Am, is related in meaning and through derivation with the term Yahveh or Jehovah. The central fact connoted by this name, I Am, or Jehovah, the two having essentially the same meaning, is that of existence or duration that shall have no end, and which, judged by all human standards of reckoning, could have had no beginning; the name is related to such other titles as Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” James E. Talmage. “Jesus the Christ ” ] Alpha [ 1. The first letter of the Greek alphabet. 2. The first of a series; the beginning. 3. Astronomy The brightest star in a constellation. ] and Omega, [ 1. The 24th letter of the Greek alphabet. See Table at alphabet. 2. The last of a series; the end. ] the beginning [ The one who formulated the plan, and carried it out. ] and the end, [ The one who will see it through to its completion. ] the same which looked upon the wide expanse of eternity, [ The Lord surveyed it, mapped it out, he comprehended it, he knew what it could become and then "He framed it by faith" Lectures On Faith. ] and all the seraphic hosts of heaven, [ He knew us as spirit children of our father in heaven. ] before the world was made;
 The same which knoweth all things, for all things are present [ Suggesting that time has a different meaning to the Lord as all things are now, current in time? "God, is not simply predicting based solely upon the past. In ways which are not clear to us, he actually sees, rather than foresees, the future—because all things are, at once, present, before him!" A More Determined Discipleship -By Elder Neal A. Maxwell Of the Presidency of the First Quorum of the Seventy; An address delivered at Brigham Young University, 10 October 1978. ] before mine eyes;
 I am the same which spake, [ Commanded the elements and the elements obey the voice of the creator – everything on this earth obeys his voice What about us do we?] and the world was made, [ This is not his first time see Moses 1:33 “Worlds without number see Psalm 8:1-3. ] and all things came by me. [ If I am the creator, and everything that is; is a result of fulfillment of my plan, and my plan is still in force and I am still the one who is on control. Now I asked you to move to Ohio; and you want to not believe that I have a purpose or reason for you to move. ]
 I am the same which have taken the Zion of Enoch into mine own bosom; [ See Moses 7. ] and verily, I say, even as many as have believed in my name, for I am Christ, and in mine own name, by the virtue of the blood which I have spilt, have I pleaded before the Father for them. [ Paraphrased from Moses 7:39. These verses 4 and 5 show that Moses 7 is linked to the answer to their question about going to Ohio, the reason for Section 38. ]
 But behold, the residue of the wicked have I kept in chains of darkness until the judgment of the great day, [ Paraphrased from Moses 7:57. While the Lord knows the beginning through the end - the wicked have no such idea. This is a warning of sort to the members who are not sure of the command to move to Ohio. The Lord is providing a warning to them that those who follow the council of the prophet will have the wisdom provided by the Lord; and those who do not - well. ] which shall come at the end of the earth;
 And even so will I cause the wicked to be kept, that will not hear my voice but harden their hearts, and wo, wo, wo, is their doom. [ Note who is causing the doom; it is not the Lord but it is those who choose to harden their hearts - they bring it upon them selves. Again another specific warning in this case directed at those who are arguing against the move to Ohio. ]
 But behold, verily, verily, I say unto you that mine eyes are upon you. [ Verses 7 - 10 spell out that the Lord is specifically addressing them, he knows them and their plight. ] I am in your midst and ye cannot see me;
 But the day soon cometh that ye shall see me, [ They shall be caught up to meet him. The righteous, those that are sanctified. See D&C 88:95-96. ] and know that I am; for the veil of darkness [ Interesting choice of words. Who is in the darkness from the veil? we are. His light does not change. ] shall soon be rent, and he that is not purified shall not abide the day. [ Mal.3:2, Isa. 33:14, Ps. 15, Ps. 24, Deut. 4:24, Exod. 19:8, Ps.50:3. ]
 Wherefore, gird up your loins [ This is a Hebraism that means "Get to work", cf. 1 Kings 18:46, 2 Kings 4:29, 2 Kings 9:1, 1 Peter1:13, and for a similar admonition, cp. D&C 27:15-18. The saying has reference to the loose robes Middle-eastern people wore anciently, and still commonly wear today. The robes are baggy to the point that they are an impediment to activities such as running or harvesting. The result was when such activities were to be undertook, the individual would remove excess robes and those which remained would be reigned in with a belt or girdle about the mid-section. In the case of males, robes above the waist were sometimes turned down so as to free the person entirely. The person was then free from the encumbrance of baggy clothing. See Smith's Bible Dictionary entry for "Dress" for a more lengthy discussion.] and be prepared. Behold, the kingdom is yours, and the enemy shall not overcome.
 Verily I say unto you, ye are clean, but not all; [ Some are not see vs 14 ] and there is none else with whom I am well pleased;
 For all flesh is corrupted before me; and the powers of darkness prevail upon the earth, [ Similiar to Enoch's vision in Moses 7: 24-28. ] among the children of men, in the presence of all the hosts of heaven[ The hosts of heaven are no different than the Lord who is in their midst see vs 7. ]
 Which causeth silence [ What is the definition then of this period of silence? Here we are given the answer. It is that period of time when the angels are required by God to wait for the great command to begin reaping the earth. Lam. 2:9-10, Ps. 35:2, Ps. 50:3, Ps. 83:1, Isa. 65:6. In essence it is that period where God is holding back his judgements on the wicked. So once he ceases holding back his judgements it is easy to see how that period could be called the Times of Desolation (The last 3.5 year period in the 7 year times of trouble). ] to reign, and all eternity is pained, and the angels are waiting the great command to reap [ To clear of a crop by reaping; as, to reap a field; To gather; to obtain; to receive as a reward, or as the fruit of labor or of works; in a good or bad sense; as, to reap a benefit from exertions; To perform the act or operation of reaping; To receive the fruit of labor or works. ] down the earth, to gather the tares that they may be burned; [ So what are the angels looking to do when the 1/2 hour of silence is over? They are looking to come down and reap the good and burn the tares. The period of silence is a period when those who are righteous should prepare to be numbered with the wheat. ] and, behold, the enemy is combined. [ Or the powers and forces of the adversary are becoming combined in their efforts to destroy man. See verse 13 - men are plotting in secret chambers to bring about your destruction. ]
 And now I show unto you a mystery, [ The Lord is saying what you may not understand I am going to show to you. In this case the designs of evil men and their conspiracy against you. ] a thing which is had in secret chambers, to bring to pass even your destruction in process of time, and ye knew it not;
 But now I tell it unto you, and ye are blessed, not because of your iniquity, neither your hearts of unbelief; for verily some of you are guilty before me, but I will be merciful unto your weakness.

 Therefore, be ye strong from henceforth; fear not, [ See D&C 30:11] for the kingdom is yours.

[ The uneven distribution of material possessions is threatening to divide the members. This is evident by the historial notes at the bottom of the section. A re-occurring theme within the church, cp. Isa. 4-5, Jacob 2:12-21, Alma31:26-28, ct. 4 Ne. 1:2-3. ]

 And for your salvation I give unto you a commandment, [ Referring here to the commandment to gather in Ohio. ] for I have heard your prayers, and the poor have complained before me, and the rich have I made, and all flesh is mine, and I am no respecter of persons . [ Lectures on Faith #3 - "But it is also necessary that men should have an idea that he is no respecter of persons, for with the idea of all the other excellencies in his character, and this one wanting, men could not exercise faith in him; because if he were a respecter of persons, they could not tell what their privileges were, nor how far they were authorized to exercise faith in him, or whether they were authorized to do it at all, but all must be confusion; but no sooner are the minds of men made acquainted with the truth on this point, that he is no respecter of persons, than they see that they have authority by faith to lay hold on eternal life, the richest boon of heaven, because God is no respecter of persons, and that every man in every nation has an equal privilege." ]
 And I have made the earth rich, [ There is plenty in the earth for all to have sufficient. Is the Lord suggesting here that while they are poor and there are many that are here, that he will help them become a people like unto Enoch were there was no poor among them, if they will move to Ohio. ] and behold it is my footstool, wherefore, again I will stand upon it.
 And I hold forth and deign to give unto you greater riches, even a land of promise, a land flowing with milk and honey, [ A promise given here that is much like the ancient Israel story of the exodus. See Exodus 3:8. ] upon which there shall be no curse when the Lord cometh;
 And I will give it unto you for the land of your inheritance, if you seek it with all your hearts.
 And this shall be my covenant [ A contract or agreement between two parties, God and his people in which God makes certain promises and requires certain behavior from them in return. In the Old Testament the Hebrew word berith_ is always thus translated. Berith_ is derived from a root which means "to cut," and hence a covenant is a "cutting," with reference to the cutting or dividing of animals into two parts, and the contracting parties passing between them, in making a covenant (Gen. 15; Jer. 34:18, 19) So in other words just as those who are covenanted to the other shepard so to are we covenanted or belong to a new master. ] with you, ye shall have it for the land of your inheritance, and for the inheritance of your children forever, while the earth shall stand, and ye shall possess it again in eternity, no more to pass away.
 But, verily I say unto you that in time ye shall have no king nor ruler, for I will be your king and watch over you. [ Compare with 2 Ne. 10:11, Ether 2:12, D&C 41:4. ]
 Wherefore, hear my voice and follow me, and you shall be a free people, and ye shall have no laws but my laws when I come, [ Does this mean that civilization will be without law? Lawless? Or does this mean that the Laws of God will superceed the laws of the land? I assume it to be the latter. ] for I am your lawgiver, [ See Moses 7:53. "I am Messiah, the King of Zion". ] and what can stay my hand?
 But, verily I say unto you, teach one another [ Which is key to becoming of one mind. ] according to the office wherewith I have appointed you; [ As contrast to 3 Ne. 6:12. ]
 And let every man esteem his brother as himself, [ "esteem" To prize; to set a high value on; to regard with reverence, respect or friendship. Which is key to becoming of one heart. ] and practise virtue and holiness before me. [ The keys to sanctification and dwelling in righteousness. ]
 And again I say unto you, let every man esteem his brother as himself. [ Repeated from verse 24 again, thus putting great emphasis on this topic. Then he will follow up with a parable to make his point. ]
 For what man [ Jesus. ] among you having twelve sons, [ Israel. ] and is no respecter of them, and they serve him obediently, and he saith unto the one: Be thou clothed in robes [ Royalty / Rich. Priesthood blessings of holding it. ] and sit thou here; and to the other: Be thou clothed in rags [ Treated without respect, looked down upon. With hold priesthood blessings. ] and sit thou there—and looketh upon his sons and saith I am just?
 Behold, this I have given unto you as a parable, and it is even as I am. [ He then is like the father in the parable with the twelve sons then. See verse 16 he is no respecter of persons. Therefore all that serve him can expect to serve him in robes (symbolizing royalty) and not rags. ] I say unto you, be one; [ This is the economy pleasing to God - this is what he mean by being one. ] and if ye are not one ye are not mine. [ Underscoring the theme in verses 23 and 24 be of one mind, one heart sanctifying ourselves to be like him, living in obedience to all that he asks such that we are one with him. Which is Zion. ]
 And again, I say unto you that the enemy in the secret chambers seeketh your lives. [ Again he returns to the warning that he previously gave back in vers 13. ]
 Ye hear of wars in far countries, and you say that there will soon be great wars in far countries, but ye know not the hearts of men in your own land. [ A warning that the secret combinations had already begun in the United States of America. This statement is far more true today than it was then. ]
  I tell you these things because of your prayers; [ Because they had exercised faith in him enough to pray to him and ask for his help. ] wherefore, treasure up wisdom [ D&C, &C 6:3, 7, 20, 27, D&C 11:7 ] in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, [ Or that you discover the wickedness plotted against you from first hand experience - you live it first hand - hence the warning. ] in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear. < [ And how were they to prepare? They were to move to the Ohio, they were to become of one heart vs 24 and one mind vs 23, sanctifying themselves in obedience to his commands vs 27. ]
 And that ye might escape the power of the enemy, and be gathered unto me a righteous people, without spot [ Vs 42; D&C 36:6. ] and blameless—
 Wherefore, for this cause I gave unto you the commandment that ye should go to the Ohio; and there I will give unto you my law; [ The Law of Consecration which is received almost immediately after Joseph Smith arrives here. Where do they need to be able to go to learn of the higher laws of God? The Temple. ] and there you shall be endowed with power from on high; [ Telling them that he wanted them to go to Kirkland Ohio and build a temple there so that he could give them an endowment. Then after they receive the endowment they should receive power from on high see vs 38. ]
 And from thence, whosoever I will shall go forth among all nations, and it shall be told them what they shall do; [ They will be told what to do as a result of the power that they received from their endowment, one of the blessings coming from their endowment. ] for I have a great work laid up in store, [ Well the Lord knows that if they are going to go to the world to teach the gospel then they really need to understand it in its entirety. They needed the knowledge to be able to answer the questions of who are we, where did we come from, what is the purpose of life, the questions of death and evil and why they existed, then how to overcome those forces, what is our potential after this life. ] for Israel shall be saved, [ Compare with 1 Ne. 22:7-11, D&C 39:11. ] and I will lead them whithersoever I will, [ So in summary the Lord has answered their questions on the purpose for them leaving and gathering in the Ohio. 1) To escape the increasingly hostile environment of the Fayette area where they are plotting to destroy the saints. 2) To become a people like Enoch's Zion people 3) To become endowed and receive his law and power from on high. 3) Take what you have learned and share it throughout the world. The Lord wanted his missionaries to go forth with the power and knowledge that comes from the endowment. ] and no power shall stay my hand.
 And now, I give unto the church in these parts a commandment, that certain men among them shall be appointed, and they shall be appointed by the voice of the church; [ The Lord is providing specific organizational information for the time on how to make the move happen. ]
 And they [ Those men who are called to do so in verse 34. ] shall look to the poor and the needy, and administer to their relief that they shall not suffer; and send them forth to the place which I have commanded them;
 And this shall be their work, to govern the affairs of the property of this church.
 And they that have farms that cannot be sold, let them be left [ Not abandoned altogether as v. 38 indicates they are to be preserved. However, failing to sell your land does not dismiss you from the council to move to Ohio. So if you cannot sell rent it or whatever - but still you are to move. ] or rented as seemeth them good.
 See that all things are preserved; and when men are endowed with power from on high [ Receive the blessings (power) as a result of the endowment. link to D&C 43:16. ] and sent forth, all these things shall be gathered unto the bosom of the church.
 And if ye seek the riches which it is the will of the Father to give unto you, ye shall be the richest of all people, for ye shall have the riches of eternity; and it must needs be that the riches of the earth are mine to give; but beware of pride, [ The pride that keeps you from doing as you are told. To leave your homes and farms and move. This would have been extremely hard as many had been the ones to have worked so hard to clear the land which was no small task. And the thought of doing that all over again for those who were older would have been extremely difficult. ] lest ye become as the Nephites of old.
 And again, I say unto you, I give unto you a commandment, that every man, both elder, priest, teacher, and also member, go to with his might, with the labor of his hands, to prepare and accomplish the things which I have commanded.
 And let your preaching be the warning voice, every man to his neighbor, in mildness and in meekness.

 And go ye out from among the wicked. Save yourselves. Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. [ Isa. 52:11; 3 Ne. 20:41; D&C 133:5 Referring to those who were assigned to carry back the Temple vessels to Jerusalem on the eve when Israel made passage from Babylon on the eve of her collapse. ] Even so. Amen.

[ Historical Material Pertaining to Doctrine & Covenants 38 While the members of the Church had received a revelation telling them to gather to Ohio (cf. D&C 37), some of the members wanted additional information concerning that command. A conference was organized and held at the Whitmer family home and this revelation was received at that conference. It is plain from the historical accounts not all members were receptive of the command to move to Ohio. The first excerpt below is Joseph’s brief comment, the second is John Whitmer’s historical account, the third is NewellKnight’s autobiographical recounting, and the fourth is OrsonPratt’s recollections some time after the events. In reviewing the history, one has to consider the social implications of what is being required. If all Mormons left at the same time, once word spread of their imminent departure it would adversely affect real estate values. This almost certainly fueled the opposition to Joseph. Then, once some of the members decided not to leave, as was obviously the case, this caused a serious rift between those who left and those who stayed given such a blatant test of faithfulness. Given what was at stake, it is not hard to see why the Lord’s comments were stern and the weak in faith fell away.Excerpt from History of the Church The year 1831 opened with a prospect great and glorious for the welfare of the kingdom; for on the 2nd of January, 1831, a conference was held in the town of Fayette, New York, at which the ordinary business of the Church was transacted; and inaddition, the following revelation was received: [text of D&C 38 quoted](Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Vol. 1, pages 140)Excerpt from Book of John Whitmer The time had now come for the general conference to be held.Which was the first of January 1831, and according to this appointment the Saints assembled themselves together. After transacting the necessary business, Joseph the Seer addressed the congregation and exhorted them to stand fast, looking forward considering the end of their salvation. The solemnities of eternity rested on the congregation and having previously received a revelation to go to Ohio, they desired to know somewhat more concerning this matter. Therefore, the Seer enquired of the Lord in the presence of the whole congregation,and thus came the word of the Lord saying: [text of D&C 38 quoted] After the Lord had manifested the above words, through Joseph the Seer, there were some divisions among the congregations, some would not receive the above as the word of the Lord: but that Joseph had invented it himself to deceive the people that in the end he might get gain. Now this was because,their hearts were not right in the sight of the Lord, for they wanted to serve God and man; but our Savior has declared that it was impossible to do so. The conference was now closed, and theLord had manifested his will to his people. Therefore they made preparations to journey to the Ohio, with their wives, and children and all that they possessed, to obey the commandment of the Lord. After these things were done Joseph and Sidney went to Colesville to do the will of the Lord in that part of the land and to strengthen the disciples in that part of the vineyard, and preach the gospel to a hardened and a wicked people; and it is fearful that they are all delivered over to hardness of heart and blindness of (mind), so that they cannot be brought to repentance. For when Sidney and the revelator arrived there, they held prayer meetings among the disciples, and they also held public meetings, but it was all in vain; they threatened to kill them. Therefore, they knew that they were not fit for the kingdom of God, and well nigh ripe for destruction. The Spirit of theLord fell upon Sidney, and he spoke with boldness, and he preached the gospel in its purity; but they laughed him to scorn,he being filled, with the Holy Spirit, he cried aloud, "O ye heavens give ear and ye angels attend, I bear witness in the name of Jesus Christ that this people is sealed up to everlasting destruction." And immediately he left them and escaped out of their hands. And his enemies were astonished and amazed at the doctrines which he preached, for they taught as men having authority and not as hireling priests. After Joseph and Sidney returned from Colesville to Fayette.The Lord manifested himself to Joseph the Revelator and gave commandment for me to go to Ohio, and carry the commandments and revelations, with me, to comfort and strengthen my brethren in that land. The disciples had increased in numbers about three hundred. But the enemy of all righteousness had got hold of some of those who professed to be his followers, because they had not sufficient knowledge to detect him in all of his devices. He took a notion to blind the minds of some of the weaker ones, and madethem think that an angel of the Lord appeared to them and showed them writings on the outside cover of the Bible, and on parchment, which flew through the air, and on the back of their hands, and many such foolish and vain things--others lost their strength, and some slid on the floor, and such like maneuvers,which proved greatly to the injury of the cause. The Lord also worked, and many embraced the work, and the honest in heart stood firm and immovable. It was very necessary that this people should have instructions, and learn to discern between the things of God and the works of Satan. For the inhabitants of the earth knew nothing of the working of the spirit of the Lord, in these days. (John Whitmer, Book of JohnWhitmer, chapter 1, paragraphs 8-12)Excerpt from Autobiography of Newell Knight A new year dawned upon us, with everything around us brightened cheerful, and the prospects ahead such as to give us joy. In the midst of persecution we rejoiced, knowing that ourGod was with us, and His great work would roll on, and man could not stop its progress. On the 2nd of January, 1831, the third conference of the Church assembled. Many of the Saints came together from the region around, and much good instruction was given. The Saints manifested unshaken confidence in the great work which they were engaged, and all rejoiced under the blessings of the gospel. Considerable business was transacted for theChurch. It was at this conference that we were instructed as a people, to begin the gathering of Israel, and a revelation was given to the prophet on this subject. Having returned home from conference, in obedience to the commandment which had been given, I, together with the Colesville Branch, began to make preparations to go to Ohio.Towards the latter part of January Brother Joseph Smithand wife, Sidney Rigdon and Edward Partridge started forKirtland, Ohio. As might be expected, we were obliged to make great sacrifices of our property. The most of my time was occupied in visiting the brethren, and helping to arrange their affairs, sothat we might travel together in one company. Having made the best arrangements we could for the journey, we bade adieu to all we held dear on this earth and in the early part ofApril started for our destination. (Newell Knight, Autobiography of Newell Knight, chapter 6, paragraphs 3-6)Excerpt from Journal of Discourses This brings to my mind a revelation which was given in aGeneral Conference on the 2nd day of January, 1831, the Churchthen having been organized about nine months. All the Saints were gathered together from various little Branches that had been established in the house of Father Whitmer, whose sons became conspicuous in this last dispensation as being witnesses of theBook of Mormon,--whose house also became conspicuous as the place where the Prophet Joseph Smith received many revelations and communications from heaven. In one small room of a log-house,nearly all the Latter-day Saints (east of Ohio) were collected together. They desired the Prophet of the Lord to inquire of Godand receive a revelation to guide and instruct the Church thatwere then present. Brother Joseph seated himself at the table.Brother Sidney Rigdon, who was at that time a member of theChurch, having just arrived from the West, where he embraced theGospel through the administration of some of the Elders, was requested to act as scribe in writing the revelation from the mouth of the Prophet Joseph. I will read a portion of this revelation:-"And again I say unto you, Let every man esteem his brother as himself; for what man among you having twelve sons,and is no respecter of them, and they serve him obediently, and he saith unto the one, Be thou clothed in robes and sit thou here; and to the other, Be thou clothed in rags and sit thou there; and looketh upon his sons and saith, I am just? Behold,this I have given unto you as a parable, and it is even as I am.I say unto you, Be one; and if ye are not one, ye are not mine."(Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, page 372, January29, 1860)]
