THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
SECTION 45
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet to the Church, at Kirtland, Ohio, March 7, 1831. HC 1: 158—163. Prefacing his record of his revelation, the Prophet states that “at this age of the Church many false reports and foolish stories were published and circulated, to prevent people from investigating the work or embracing the faith; but to the joy of the saints . . . I received the following.”

1—5 , Christ is our Advocate with the Father; 6—10 , The gospel is a messenger to prepare the way before the Lord; 11—15 , Enoch and his brethren received by the Lord unto himself; 16—23 , Christ revealed signs of his coming as given on the Mount of Olives; 24—38 , The gospel shall be restored, the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled, and a desolating sickness cover the land; 39—47 , Signs, wonders, and the resurrection are to attend the Second Coming; 48—53 , Christ shall stand on Mount of Olives, and Jews shall see the wounds in his hands and feet; 54—59< , The Lord shall reign during the Millennium; 60—62 , The Prophet is instructed to begin the translation of the New Testament, through which important information would be made known; 63—75 , The saints are commanded to gather and build the New Jerusalem, to which people from all nations will come.

[ Looking at the historical material it appears that there was quite a bit of negative press concerning apocalyptic themes, and the saints appeared to have been distracted from what they should presently be doing as a result. The key points are that the saints should listen to the Lord not men (v. 1-9). They should focus more on establishing Zion (v. 11-14, 62-71). The apocalyptic material in this section is largely a reactionary statement showing forth both ancient and contemporary predictions. Many of these predictions are well-documented in the Bible, and were being fulfilled in the eyes of the people. some additional yet-to-be-fulfilled material is included for upcoming generations as well. Thus, this is a section of the LDS canon being fulfilled in the eyes of the Gentile nations, who were presently mocking the church. Based upon subject, the text can be arranged as follows:

]Introduction - Listen to Me, superlative (v. 1-9)

HEARKEN, [ Or Listen; in this case to your creator v1 and your destroyer v2. ] O ye people of my church, to whom the kingdom has been given; hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] ye and give ear to him who laid the foundation of the earth, [ Who framed all things; who saw the potential and the gave organization to that all might have a purpose. ] who made the heavens and all the hosts thereof, [ And then created all things. ] and by whom all things were made which live, and move, and have a being. [ And after their creation he gave them a spirit - life itself. ]
2 And again I say, hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] unto my voice, lest death shall overtake you; in an hour when ye think not the summer shall be past, [ Crops growth and produce fruit during the months of the summer. While it may be hot it takes the bright sun of the summer to produce and give forth the crops. ] and the harvest ended, [ When the harvest is over the plants have little use, they are spent, they have done all that they can on their own. ] and your souls not saved.
Listen to him who is the advocate with the Father, [ Listen to your advocate and intercessor with the father. v 3-5. He has just instructed us that he is our creator now he provides us with imagery that he is also the one who is pleading our case with our Father in heaven. Vs 4 specifies just how he pleads that case. This intercession is direct contrast to that of the destroyer in verse 2. President Marion G. Romney taught, “The atonement of the Master is the central point of world history. Without it, the whole purpose for the creation of earth and our living upon it would fail” (Conference Report, October 1953, 34). The great and terrible events surrounding the Savior’s coming in glory have no meaning unless His first coming is fully understood and appreciated. It is natural for us to want to fixate on the conditions of the last days and to consider the best way to navigate the challenges we will face. But the tumult and upheaval of the time preceding the Second Coming are best overcome by appreciation and acceptance of the atoning Christ. Knowing the Savior and His gospel can allow us to have peace in our hearts and a hope for a better world, even if the world around us seems to be falling into disarray. ] who is pleading your cause before him—
4 Saying: Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy son which was shed, the blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified; [ I did it because you asked me to. Heb 5:8. ]
5 Wherefore, Father, spare these my brethren that believe on my name, that they may come unto me and have everlasting life.
Hearken, [ Again this is the third time we are told to listen in this case to the God who is both the Israelites as well as the Gentiles. v 6-9. Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] O ye people of my church, and ye elders listen together, and hear my voice while it is called today, and harden not your hearts;
7 For verily I say unto you that I am [ “The Hebrew, Ehyeh, signifying I Am, is related in meaning and through derivation with the term Yahveh or Jehovah. The central fact connoted by this name, I Am, or Jehovah, the two having essentially the same meaning, is that of existence or duration that shall have no end, and which, judged by all human standards of reckoning, could have had no beginning; the name is related to such other titles as Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” James E. Talmage. “Jesus the Christ ” ] Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the light and the life of the world—a light that shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not.
I came unto mine own, [ The house of Israel; the Jews specifically. ] and mine own received me not; but unto as many as received me gave I power to do many miracles, [ The Priesthood. Why does he give us the priesthood and the power to perform miracles? It is there to 1) help others; to show that God does love us; 2) through learning and exercising the priesthood we learn how to become son's of God. ] and to become the sons of God; and even unto them that believed on my name gave I power to obtain eternal life. [ To become the children of Christ and thus become heirs of his kingdom. The way he did this is by giving them his everlasting covenant. “Power to become” a son or daughter of God is synonymous with ‘power to obtain eternal life’ or exaltation. Speaking of those in the Celestial Kingdom the Lord explains “wherefore, as it is written, they are gods, even the sons of God” (D&C 76:58). (D&C 25:1). ]
9 And even so I have sent mine everlasting covenant [ All covenants between God and man are part of the everlasting covenant.- It is the gospel as it stands in that dispensation. This everlasting covenant to which he is referring here is the "Fullness of the gospel" as defined in section 39:11. ] into the world, to be a light to the world, and to be a standard for my people, [ The everlasting covenant is to be the great beacon that give the light for better to the world, it is the standard that those who believe in him will gather around as they prepare for his return. ] and for the Gentiles to seek to it, and to be a messenger before my face to prepare the way before me. [ Receiving the everlasting covenant is like in days of old when they would receive the kings messenger, if you received the kings messenger then you were prepared to receive the king. ] [ Paraphrases of Isaiah and Malachi (cp. Isa. 42:6, Isa. 49:6, Isa. 51:4-5, Mal. 3:1). ]
10 Wherefore, come ye unto it, [ Speaking of the everlasting covenant; from this point to verse 59 the Lord begins his plea in detail as to why we should come under a covenant with him. ] and with him that cometh I will reason as with men in days of old, and I will show unto you my strong reasoning.
11 Wherefore, hearken ye together and let me show unto you even my wisdom—the wisdom of him whom ye say is the God of Enoch, and his brethren, [ As if to say just as the city of Enoch became righteous in the midst of great wickedness; so to can you build a city of righteousness amidst wickedness. Hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ]
12 Who were separated from the earth, [ Referring to Enoch and his people who were called up from this earth. See JST Gen 14:34 ] and were received unto myself—a city reserved until a day of righteousness shall come [ Or the millennium. ] a day which was sought for by all holy men, and they found it not because of wickedness and abominations; [ Maybe a word of caution; that it is not easily done as many holy men have tried to get a group of people to gather together in righteousness but the natural man most often wins the war. v. 12 indicates the Millennium is part of a fulfillment of a covenant made to Enoch and whoever else these "holy men" were. ]
13 And confessed they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth;
14 But obtained a promise that they should find it and see it in their flesh.
15 Wherefore, hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". ] and I will reason with you, and I will speak unto you and prophesy, as unto men in days of old.
16 And I will show it plainly as I showed it unto my disciples as I stood before them in the flesh, [ Or the Olivet Discourse (Matt 24; Mark 13; Luke 21 )] and spake unto them, saying: As ye have asked of me concerning the signs of my coming, in the day when I shall come in my glory in the clouds of heaven, to fulfil the promises that I have made unto your fathers, [ The promises made to Abraham, Enoch, etc, so the Lord says that this is the reason that he is doing these things. ]
17 For as ye have looked upon the long absence of your spirits from your bodies to be a bondage, [ The ancient apostles viewed the period between their death and their resurrection as a long absence - as it would be some 2000 plus years. ] I will show unto you how the day of redemption shall come, and also the restoration of the scattered Israel. [ Which includes: 1 Gathering Israel out from among the nations they were scattered to, so that 2) They can become part of a unified kingdom under the Messiah. Who is a powerful but benevolent descendent of King David who will rule over all of Israel as their shepherd-king forever and ever. (Duet 30:1-6; Ezek 34:12-16, 23-24;37:21-22; Isa 11;49 Luke 1:31-33, Acts 1:6 )]
18 And now ye behold this temple which is in Jerusalem, [ All of the events here vs 18-25 appear to be referring to the historical Jews at ancient Jerusalem. ] which ye call the house of God, and your enemies say that this house shall never fall.
19 But, verily I say unto you, that desolation shall come upon this generation as a thief in the night, and this people shall be destroyed and scattered among all nations.
20 And this temple which ye now see shall be thrown down that there shall not be left one stone upon another.
21 And it shall come to pass, that this [ Here we have modifiers added to identify "this" generation. "This" isn't intended to identify the current one to Josephs day. "This" is intended to designate the generation that is alive when the specified modifiers occur. Now obviously this wasn't clear to the early saints, and they assumed it meant them. But until the prerequisites were met, the current generation of any time can't be "this" generation spoken of. Since there is not time in Gods world, so God speaks to us using markers.... when things come to pass, signs. Like for example the last supper when the Lord said "I'll be going away and prepare a place for you...." In D&C 45:60-62 Joseph is instructed to translate the New Testament. I think that translation, especially Matt 24 (found in Joesph Smith - Matthew) helps clarify that the generation he is speaking of is the generation that sees the signs. ] generation of Jews shall not pass away until every desolation which I have told you concerning them shall come to pass.
22 Ye say that ye know that the end of the world cometh; ye say also that ye know that the heavens and the earth shall pass away;
23 And in this ye say truly, for so it is; but these things which I have told you shall not pass away until all shall be fulfilled.
24 And this I have told you concerning Jerusalem; [ In the Joseph Smith—Matthew version of this prophecy, Jesus refers to the events described here in verses 18-23 as “the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet” (JS—M 1:12). In AD 70, a Roman army led by Titus swept into Palestine and laid siege to Jerusalem. During this conflict the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed and left in ruin. As one Jewish historian noted, the destruction of Jerusalem in this time “marked a transition period between the independence of Israel as a people living in its own political and social framework, and the period of exile when the nation was dispersed as a minority, large or small, without any center of national leadership and without any active political initiative” (The Illustrated History of the Jews, 1963, 138). ] and when that day shall come, [ Specifically the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. ] shall a remnant be scattered among all nations; [ The Jews will be scattered among all of the earth. ]
25 But they shall be gathered again; [ Or the second time (again) 2 Ne. 6:14; Jacob 6:2; D&C 137:6 ] but they [ The Jews. ] shall remain [ Shall remain what? They will still be in the their scattered condition, and they will remain in that condition until the times of the gentiles be fulfilled. ] until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. [ "times of the Gentiles" refers to that period of time extending from when the gospel was restored to the world (1830) to when the gospel will again be preached to the Jews—after the Gentiles have rejected it. This is how the Lord explained it: And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, a light shall break forth among them that sit in darkness, and it shall be the fullness of my gospel; But they receive it not; for they perceive not the light, and they turn their hearts from me because of the precepts of men. And in that generation shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. [D&C 45:28–30] Prepare Yourselves for the Great Day of the Lord EZRA TAFT BENSON of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles April 14, 1981. So the Jews will remain scattered until the "times of the Gentiles" is fulfilled. See Luke 21:24; JST Luke 21:32; 3 Ne. 20:25-29. In general conference in 1966, Elder Smith, now President of the Quorum of the Twelve, said: “Jesus said the Jews would be scattered among all nations and Jerusalem would be trodden down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles were fulfilled. (Luke 21:24.) The prophecy in Section 45, verses 24–29, of the Doctrine and Covenants regarding the Jews was literally fulfilled. Jerusalem, which was trodden down by the Gentiles, is no longer trodden down but is made the home for the Jews. They are returning to Palestine, and by this we may know that the times of the Gentiles are near their close.” (In Conference Report, Apr. 1966, p. 13.) During the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel conquered the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and for the first time since the city fell to the legions of Titus in A.D. 70, Jerusalem came completely under the control of a Jewish government. ]
26 And in that day [ The last days JS-Matt 1:27. Or at the time when the times of the gentiles is fulfilled. Here are the tings that will be happening when the times of the gentiles is fulfilled: Wars; Rumors of Wars; Earth in Commotion; Hearts Failing; Thinking that Christ is delaying his coming; True Love waxes cold; Iniquity is everywhere. Then the gathering takes place. ] shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men’s hearts shall fail them, [ They are giving up hope because everything is becoming so bad. Why? Because they have forgotten their eternal identity and their purpose. They are not looking at life from an eternal perspective. ] and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth. [ Or could we say this as the people will be saying; If there really is a God then where is he, why does he not come and put an end to all of this suffering. They do not believe in God but they are sure willing to give him credit for the destruction and illness. ]
27 And the love of men shall wax cold, [ JS-Matt 1:10,30. ] and iniquity shall abound. [ 3 Ne. 20:28. ]
28 And when the times of the Gentiles is come in, [ So this is really the beginning of the times of the gentiles. The time predicted for Ephraim in Gen. 48:19 CP Romans 11:25-32; JS-Hist 1:41 "times of the Gentiles" refers to that period of time extending from when the gospel was restored to the world (1830) to when the gospel will again be preached to the Jews—after the Gentiles have rejected it. (D&C 45:28–30) Prepare Yourselves for the Great Day of the Lord EZRA TAFT BENsoN of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles April 14, 1981. ] a light shall break forth [ As a result of the everlasting covenant see vs 9. The gospel comes forth in the restoration. ] among them that sit in darkness, [ Those who are without the gospel. ] and it shall be the fulness of my gospel; [ The fullness of the gospel being delivered to the Gentiles, or the beginning of the times of the Gentiles. 1 Ne. 15:13-18; 3 Ne. 16:4. When interpreting this text we must be careful as "fullness" and "fulfil" sound alike but mean different things. The "fullness" has reference to the fullness of the gospel being delivered to the Gentiles, or the beginning of the times of the Gentiles. The fulfillment is at the end of the times of the Gentiles. ]
29  But they [ The Gentiles. ] receive it not; for they perceive not the light, [ Why would they not? Because they as a society have become so corrupt, so wicked. That they have lost their ability to see light when it is before them. ] and they turn [ Use their agency. ] their hearts from me because of the precepts of men. [ They make a choice to follow the ideas of man, they think they are so smart that they can control and overcome everything on their own such that they do not need God. This is Babylon in a nutshell. In the ancient days they where building a tower to show that they were better than God, today we are doing essentially the same things. For example look at AGI (Artificial general intelligence) which is designed with the ability for the AI computers to reason just as a human would. Then right on its heals(around 2028? No one knows as this is progressing so fast) in we might have Artificial superintelligence(ASI) which will greatly exceeds human cognitive capabilities, and as they say have God like qualities. See 3 Nephi 16:10- ]
30  And in that generation [ That period of time when the gospel is rejected because they think they are smarter than God(just like the ancient Babylonians). ] shall the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. [ Or the "Times of the Gentiles" has come to its end; it has been fulfilled. "times of the Gentiles" refers to that period of time extending from when the gospel was restored to the world (1830) to when the gospel will again be preached to the Jews—after the Gentiles have rejected it. ]
31 And there shall be men standing in that generation, [ Generation again a period of time, However this period is denoted with men standing, suggesting this is a literal interpretation of generation here so around a hundred years. This is referring to the period right after the Times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. ] that shall not pass [ Reference to physical death, cf. 4 Ne. 1:22, D&C 84:5, JS-Matt.1:35. ] until they shall see an overflowing scourge; for a desolating sickness [ Websters definition for "desolating" is Depriving of inhabitants; wasting; ravaging (suggesting this is not covid). It is difficult to know if this statement is referring twice to the same event or two different events. Isaiah 28:15 refers to an “overflowing scourge” that is presumably Assyria/Babylon, and Isa. 9-10 use various images presenting the king of Assyria as a tool of destruction in the Lord's hand. However, that is typically seen as referring to events in the Middle East when eschatologically interpreted. Revelation 9 has both wars and plagues occurring in the seventh seal, so its safe to assume the phrase is referring to two different events. “overflowing scourge” cp. D&C 5:19, D&C 97:23, also the TG “scourge” entry. Reference to “desolating sickness”, cp. Zech. 14:12, D&C 29:19, D&C 84:96-97, D&C 87:67. On Nov 17th 2019 there was uncovered a plague that covered every city of the world, COVID-19. Such a pandemic and the timing could also be a fulfillment of such a prophecy. The first part of this verse suggests that there will be a period of time when the gospel will go forth to the entire world, this period of time is suggested around a hundred years and then at the end of that period there wil be a scourge that cover the entire face of the earth. ] shall cover the land. [ The earth. ] .
32 But my disciples [ Those who follow his command. John 15:1-15 Acts 11:26 ] shall stand in holy places, [ President Harold B. Lee promised that “the true servants of God, those who are doing their duty, will be protected and preserved if they will do as the Lord has counseled: ‘stand ye in holy places’” (Stand Ye in Holy Places, p. 87). President Lee also wrote: “The Lord has told us where these ‘holy places’ are: “‘And it shall come to pass among the wicked, that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion for safety.’ (D&C 45:68.) “Where is Zion? “During the various periods of time or dispensations, and for specific reasons, the Lord’s prophets, His ‘mouthpieces,’ as it were, have designated gathering places where the Saints were to gather. After designating certain such places in our dispensation, the Lord then declared: “‘Until the day cometh when there is found no more room for them; and then I have other places which I will appoint unto them, and they shall be called stakes, for the curtains or the strength of Zion.’ (D&C 101:21.) … “There are several meanings of the word Zion. “It may have reference to the hill named Mount Zion, or, by extension, the land of Jerusalem. … “Zion was so called by Enoch in referring to the ‘City of Holiness’ (Moses 7:19) or the ‘City of Enoch’. The land of Zion has been used to refer, in some connotations, to the Western Hemisphere. “But there is another most significant use of the term by which the Church of God is called Zion: It comprises, according to the Lord’s own definition, ‘the pure in heart.’ (D&C 97:21.) “As one studies the Lord’s commandments and the attending promises for compliance therewith, one gets some definite ideas as to how we might ‘stand in holy places,’ as the Lord commands—how we will be preserved with protection in accordance with His holy purposes, in order that we might be numbered among the ‘pure in heart’ who constitute Zion.” (Stand Ye in Holy Places, pp. 22–23.) In light of these teachings, “holy places” may have more to do with how one lives than where one lives. If we live worthy of the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, then we stand in a holy place. The home is the most important institution for teaching the children of God the principles of Zion. President Lee counseled: “Teach your families in your family home evening; teach them to keep the commandments of God, for therein is our only safety in these days. If they will do that, the powers of the Almighty will descend upon them as the dews from heaven, and the Holy Ghost will be theirs. That can be our guide, and that Spirit shall guide us and direct us to His holy home.” (Lee, Stand Ye in Holy Places, p. 190; see also Joseph L. Wirthlin, in Conference Report, Oct. 1958, pp. 33–34.) A holy place is any place where a person enjoys the Spirit of God. The Lord commands that each member stand firmly in holy places and not be moved (falter or fall away into forbidden paths) until the Lord comes to claim His own. We should each obey this command so that we can “abide the day” (D&C 45:57). See also D&C 27:15; 101;22 ] and shall not be moved; [ Either spiritually or physically. Does this mean that those Holy areas where the saints have gathered that they will not be moved from them? ] but among the wicked, men shall lift up their voices and curse God and die. [ Do we not die spiritually when we curse God? Because when we do we limit how God can work in our life to save us. If we do not believe in God then he cannot save us, as we must repent and come to him, and believe on him for salvation. Without our belief he cannot save us. ]
33 And there shall be earthquakes also in divers places, and many desolations; yet men will harden their hearts against me, and they will take up the sword, one against another, [ So what is it that seemingly causes such division between people of the earth? It appears as if it will be mother against son, father against mother maybe. No real boundary of who is not effected. Total anarchy. ] and they will kill [ There is no value left on human life. This will end the time of the fullness of the gentiles. In part because the world has become so wicked that you will not be able to survive unless you take up the sword, so a good indication that missionary work will end at this point, the gathering will end. ] one another.
34 And now, when I the Lord had spoken these words unto my disciples, they were troubled. [ Maybe a better meaning for today is they were not really excited or happy. ]

35 And I said unto them: Be not troubled, [ Or understand the purpose for these events. As hard as they are to bear they are for a purpose, I have told you they would come, now they are here. They have a season and an end, but knowing about them should give you a peace knowing that I am in charge. ] , for, when all these things shall come to pass, [ Let's recap what they are: Wars; Rumors of Wars; Earth in Commotion; Hearts Failing; Thinking that Christ is delaying his coming; True Love waxes cold; Iniquity is everywhere, everyone has taken up the sword and is killing their mother and father, brother and sister. ( We have become that divided as a world. No commonality, even if they have it in one thing that other will be so far off that they will kill over it. ) ] ye may know that the promises which have been made unto you shall be fulfilled.

[ The fulfilling of the promises to the fathers as promised in v 14;16 fulfillment vs 36-44. ]

36 And when the light shall begin to break forth, [ The restoration of the Gospel. v 9, 28. ] it shall be with them [ Who? those who are disciples. So those that are the believers will be the ones that will notice these things, the others not so much. ] like unto a parable which I will show you—
37 Ye look and behold the figtrees, and ye see them with your eyes, and ye say when they begin to shoot forth, and their leaves are yet tender, that summer is now nigh at hand; [ You know that summer is coming, but it is a season away. ]
38 Even so it shall be in that day when they shall see all these things, [ So it al begins withe the respration but is ready to be fulfilled in the day that all of the signs are present: Wars; Rumors of Wars; Earth in Commotion; Hearts Failing; Thinking that Christ is delaying his coming; True Love waxes cold; Iniquity is everywhere, Desolating sickness, Earthquakes, Many desolations, Men taking up the sword and killing each other. In other words it is going to ge very bad. ] then shall they know that the hour is nigh.
39 And it shall come to pass that he that feareth me [ Those who show reverence, awe, and worship God. Being fearful of God is therefore an essential part of the attitude of mind in which we ought to stand toward the All-holy God. ] shall be looking forth for the great day of the Lord to come, even for the signs of the coming of the son of Man. [ When the previous events has taken place ( v26-38) then you can look for the signs of his return. ]
40 And they shall see [ Those that fear God. They will see them because they are looking for them. ] signs and wonders, for they [ The signs. ] shall be shown forth in the heavens above, and in the earth beneath.
41 And they shall behold blood, and fire, and vapors of smoke.
42 And before the day of the Lord shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood, and the stars fall from heaven.
43 And the remnant [ Of Judah the Jews. ] shall be gathered unto this place; [ Jerusalem vs 24-25. ]
44 And then they [ The Jews. ] shall look for me, and, behold, I will come; [ The second coming 2 Ne. 6:8-14; 25:15-17. ] and they shall see me in the clouds of heaven, [ So before he comes in full power at the end of the Millennium he will come he will come to the saints and they shall see him. This is not the final part but earlier on because this is happening before the arm of the Lord falls on the nations of the earth. vs 45 ( ie the great tribulations). ] clothed with power and great glory; with all the holy angels; and he that watches not for me shall be cut off. [ Have you ever asked yourself why the Lord has given us so much information about his second coming? Here he indicates one reason. According to this scripture, what is your responsibility? If the Lord has revealed the signs which men should look for but they don’t watch for them, can they blame him if the cataclysm of the last days overtake them? Why is it necessary for you to prepare yourself and “watch” for the Lord? ]
45  But before [ Previous to the Lord exercising vengeance on the wicked. ] the arm of the Lord shall fall, [ The great tribulations. Is this talking about the end of the 1/2 hour of silence when God ceases to hold back his judgements from the earth? In some cases the Lord uses vicarious “arms” to do His work, but this text suggests the Lord Himself taking over in the first-person to destroy His enemies, which is a common apocalyptic theme, cp. Isa. 34, Isa. 63, Rev. 19. ] an angel shall sound his trump, and the saints that have slept shall come forth to meet me in the cloud. [ The second phase of First Resurrection, or the resurrection of all of the righteous dead that died after Jesus, cp. Matt. 24:31 (JS-Matt. 1:37), 1 Thes. 4:16-17, D&C 88:96, D&C 101:31, D&C 109:75. ]
46 Wherefore, if ye have slept in peace blessed are you; for as you now behold me and know that I am, even so shall ye come unto me and your souls shall live, and your redemption shall be perfected; and the saints shall come forth from the four quarters of the earth. [ This then is the quickening event. The righteous Saints that are living on the earth will be caught up to meet him. Note that they are caught up to meet him, they are protected before his arm falls on the nations of the earth otherwise known as the great Tribulations. See D&C 88:95, 96, 98. ]
47  Then shall the arm of the Lord fall upon the nations. [ The Jews see Jesus, the saints rise from the dead, and then the arm of the Lord falls with destruction on the wicked. ] [ So if I am correct God has been holding back his arm until the end of the 1/2 hour of silence and after the quickening event. And now his judgement come upon the earth. ]
48  And then [ Suggesting that there is a period of time between his arm falling and this event happening. ] shall the Lord set his foot upon this mount, [ Olivette. ] and it shall cleave in twain, and the earth shall tremble, and reel to and fro, and the heavens also shall shake.[ Compare with Zech. 14:4; D&C 144:56. ]
49 And the Lord shall utter his voice, and all the ends of the earth shall hear it; and the nations of the earth shall mourn, and they that have laughed shall see their folly.
50 And calamity shall cover the mocker, and the scorner shall be consumed; and they that have watched for iniquity shall be hewn down and cast into the fire.
51  And then shall the Jews look upon me and say: [ He will do this to those who have fled through the cracks in the mountain when it was divided verse 48. President Woodruff has referred to this great event as follows: “… the Jews have got to gather to their own land in unbelief. … and when they have done this and rebuilt their city, the Gentiles, in fulfillment of the words of Ezekiel, Jeremiah and other prophets, will go up against Jerusalem to battle and to take a spoil and a prey; and then, when they have taken one-half of Jerusalem captive and distressed the Jews for the last time on the earth, their Great Deliverer, Shiloh, will come.” (JD, vol. 15, pp. 277–78. Italics added.) ] What are these wounds in thine hands and in thy feet?
52 Then shall they know that I am the Lord; for I will say unto them: These wounds are the wounds with which I was wounded in the house of my friends. [ Who were his friends? Israel. ] I am he who was lifted up. I am Jesus that was crucified. I am the son of God. [ If this will be the state of the Jewish people that they will just know then this might in part provide some explanation for why the church was so willing to not proselyting in Israel or send missionaries there. There is not real need until the time is right and at that point they will quickly realize. See Isa. 25:9, 2 Ne. 6:13, 2 Ne. 25:16. ]

53 And then shall they weep because of their iniquities; then shall they lament because they persecuted their king.

[ Verse 54-59

A - (v. 54) Heathen nations, those without Law redeemed

B - (v. 55) Satan bound

C - (v. 56) Bridegroom joins the wise virgins

A - (v. 57) The wise who receive the truth abide the Day

B - (v. 58) Children grow up without sin

C - (v. 59) Lord in their midst, their lawgiver.]

54 And then shall the heathen nations be redeemed, and they that knew no law shall have part in the first resurrection; [ This is happening over time, it is on-going as the Jews are coming to know Christ. ] and it shall be tolerable for them.
55 And Satan shall be bound, that he shall have no place in the hearts of the children of men.
56 And at that day, when I shall come in my glory, shall the parable be fulfilled which I spake concerning the ten virgins.
57 For they that are wise and have received the truth, and have taken the Holy Spirit for their guide, [ As President Nelson puts it they "Hear Him". This is the oil from the parable, this is what cannot be done for you nor can you do it for anyone else. I believe that there will come a time when truth will be so hard to determine. For example the logic presented by AI systems will be deeper than we as humans can think. The logic will stifle our human minds, with the AGI grasp of all general intelligence it will present ideas back to us that we canot argue against as the AGI logic will be so good. At this point we will only be able to determine truth through the spirit - by hearing him. Remember God changed the language of the people because God said "they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do." (Gen 11:6) Does that sound like what AGI(Artificial general intelligence) and ASI(Artificial superintelligence which will go beyond the bounds of human cognitive capabilities and will exercise its own agency) are being programed to do? ] and have not been deceived—verily I say unto you, they shall not be hewn down and cast into the fire, but shall abide the day.
58 And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation.
59 For the Lord shall be in their midst, and his glory shall be upon them, and he will be their king and their lawgiver.
60 And now, behold, I say unto you, it shall not be given unto you to know any further concerning this chapter, until the New Testament be translated, [ So this is the end of the revelation on this for now; but when you translate the bible again it shall be made known. ] and in it all these things shall be made known;

61 Wherefore I give unto you that ye may now translate it, that ye may be prepared for the things to come.

[ Verse 62-71 deal with the Prediction of New Jerusalem. These verses follow the general tenor of D&C 38:13-14 and D&C 42:64, except now the requirement to build New Jerusalem is made explicit. The previously implicit references to establish Zion are also made explicit in v. 67. As New Jerusalem was not built by them at that time, the question is “Is this command relevant to us now?” D&C 90:37 and D&C 101:17 would argue that New Jerusalem will ultimately be built regardless. The failure to establish the Zion/New Jerusalem at Independence was primarily a result of their failure to abide the United Order. One should note the later verses, especially v. 68-70, still have potential for fulfillment in the events leading up to the Day of the Lord. The failure to fulfill this prediction is occasionally used by those unfavorably disposed towards the Church to say that Smith was a false prophet and so on. In response to them, see D&C 56:4, D&C 58:30-33. That people fail to do what the Lord commands happens everyday as people violate the Ten Commandments. Are the Lord and His prophets made false by the failure of the ecclesia to do what He commands? ]

62 For verily I say unto you, that great things await you;
63 Ye hear of wars in foreign lands; but, behold, I say unto you, they are nigh, even at your doors, and not many years hence ye shall hear of wars in your own lands.
64 Wherefore I, the Lord, have said, gather ye out from the eastern lands, assemble ye yourselves together ye elders of my church; go ye forth into the western countries, call upon the inhabitants to repent, and inasmuch as they do repent, build up churches unto me.
65  And with one heart and with one mind, gather up your riches [ Is this the time when we will live the law of consecration again? Sounds like it is preparatory fro the New Jerusalem(verse 66)“And the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them” (Moses 7:18). Just as the Lord called Enoch's people or Zion. ] that ye may purchase an inheritance which shall hereafter be appointed unto you. [ Or purchase the land through proper means, this same land will later be given to the saints of God as an eternal inheritance. ]
66 And it shall be called the New Jerusalem, [ The size of New Jerusalem is very large as described in Rev. 21:16 John the Revelator gave the dimensions of the New Jerusalem as 12,000 furlongs square. A furlong is an eighth of a mile. That means 1500 miles square. From Jackson County, MO to SLC is 1308 via the highway system. Incidentally, when the Nauvoo temple was dedicated, President Hinkley mentioned that the statute faced west rather than east because Nauvoo & SLC Temples were "bookends". It's some 1400 miles between SLC & Nauvoo. (“O That I Were an Angel, and Could Have the Wish of Mine Heart,” Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2002, 6). ] a land of peace, [ Peaceful because it will be under the protection of God. It will be a place of gathering. ] a city of refuge, [ A place to go to escape the evil combinations of the world. ] a place of safety for the saints of the Most High God; [ Will it only be the saints of God? I assume that it will also be a place for those who are like minded in the gospel, those of other faiths, at least at the time when them come because they see the good, they want to be a part of it. ]
67 And the glory of the Lord shall be there, [ What does that imply - the glory of God shall be there? D&C 84:4-5,31 He will establish his house there similar to what he did with the Children of Israel when the glory of God was in the tabernacle. D&C 64:41 Moses 1:31 "the glory of the Lord was upon Moses, so that Moses stood in the presence of God, and talked with him face to face." D&C 97:15-20 "15...my glory shall rest upon it; 16 Yea, and my presence shall be there, for I will come into it, and all the pure in heart that shall come into it shall see God." SO then it is a place where God will dwell, and if we know anything then we know that if God is dwelling there then only people of a certain character will be able to be there as there is an ETERNAL LAW which states that NO UNCLEAN THING CAN BE IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD. ] and the terror of the Lord also shall be there, insomuch that the wicked will not come unto it, and it [ This place. ] shall be called Zion. [ Just as a like minded people were called in the days of Enoch. ]
68 And it shall come to pass among the wicked, [ Everyone that is living outside of the New Jerusalem/Zion. It will be built during a time of great wickedness. So if during its building there is great wickedness, then they will be in opposition to it being built, suggesting to me that either it will be very hard to be built, or that it will have some kind of protection around it, or that it might be built extremely quickly.(My personal thought here is that this is when the 10 tribes will return and help in the protection and the building of the New Jerusalem) Because once it is built we do know that from that time forward it will be protected. ] that every man that will not take his sword against his neighbor must needs flee unto Zion for safety.
69  And there shall be gathered [ We cannot have this gathering until we have some place to gather them too. ] unto it out of every nation under heaven; and it [ New Jerusalem. ] shall be the only people that shall not be at war one with another. [ So the wars and rumors of wars will be so widespread that this will be the only group not at war. We find out in the next verse that it is only with the Lords help that they are not at war. This is like in the days of Enoch. Everyone feared the city of Enoch because of the power that they had, it will be the same in the last days. ]
70 And it shall be said among the wicked: [ Or those who choose not to live in New Jerusalem. ] Let us not go up to battle against Zion, for the inhabitants of Zion are terrible; wherefore we cannot stand. [ The people in New Jerusalem/Zion have a power that cannot be taken over. God is with them. ]
71 And it shall come to pass that the righteous [ Or the blood of Israel, those who hear and want to follow the voice of the Lord. ] shall be gathered out from among all nations, and shall come to Zion, singing with songs of everlasting joy.
72 And now I say unto you, keep these things from going abroad unto the world [ Or as we would say today don't let your competition know, don't let your enemies know until you are ready to proceed so that they cannot plan for it. ] until it is expedient in me, that ye may accomplish this work in the eyes of the people, and in the eyes of your enemies, that they may not know your works until ye have accomplished the thing which I have commanded you;
73 That when they shall know it, that they may consider these things.
74 For when the Lord shall appear he shall be terrible unto them, that fear may seize upon them, and they shall stand afar off and tremble. [ See Isa. 13:8, Isa. 17:13, Isa. 64:2, D&C 34:8. ]

75 And all nations shall be afraid because of the terror of the Lord, and the power of his might. Even so. Amen.

[ Atonement: Alma 42:1-; 3 Nephi 27:13-21 Obedience: Abraham 3:25; Heb 5:8; D&C 105:6 Historical Material Pertaining to Doctrine & Covenants 45 The first quotation is Smith’s brief recollection of the events prompting the revelation. The second is Whitmer’s similarly brief recollection, with an additional comment preceding it. The third excerpt is from the Painesville Telegraph. The latter half of the Telegraph excerpt is probably that which Smith makes reference to, the first half is probably what Whitmer was making reference to in his comment about the incorrect tradition had among some early saints. The third excerpt below indicates the content of the revelation was influenced by Smith’s translation of the Bible, which was occurring at the time. The fourth is a comprehensive review of the various hostile newspaper articles Smith refers to in his recollection. With respect to the excerpt from the Telegraph, the “Mormonism in China” piece merits some comment. The article appears to be intended as a satire where some dubious revelation sweeping through China by implicit threat is likened to “Mormonism”. The implication being the Mormons are using sensational apocalyptic threats of destruction, similar to those employed in China, to promise deliverance by propagating the revelation. The Book of Mormon being likened to the “revelation” and those foolishly propagating it under the guise of being delivered from the imminent destruction being the early saints. That the early saints had a rather apocalyptic view of their times and considered the Second Advent to be imminent is plainly manifest in the historical record. History indicates they also had a rather uncompromising view towards acceptance or rejection of their message, which could probably be said of most organized religions of the time. so, the “Mormonism in China” satire drew on some element of fact, and then lampooned it by effectively comparing it to what we would call a “chain letter” today. The connection Smith makes between the “Mormonism in China” article and the apparent prediction of an earthquake by a member girl (cf. footnote on HC Vol. 1, page 158), is not clear. Whether they were merely contemporaneous, or the prediction and subsequent commotion surrounding it’s apparent fulfilment (e.g., the prediction and fulfilment was well known enough to have resulted in the conversion of at least one person, Simmonds Ryder) gave rise to the article is left unexplained, although Smith’s brief comments suggest the latter. Excerpt from History of the Church At this age of the Church [i.e., early in the spring of 1831] many false reports, lies, and foolish stories, were published in the newspapers, and circulated in every direction, to prevent people from investigating the work, or embracing the faith. A great earthquake in China, which destroyed from one to two thousand inhabitants, was burlesqued in some papers, as “‘Mormonism’ in China.” But to the joy of the Saints who had to struggle against every thing that prejudice and wickedness could invent, I received the following: [text of D&C 45 quoted] (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, Vol. 1, pages 158-159) Excerpt from Book of John Whitmer About this time some were sick of various diseases, and were healed by the power which was in them through Jesus Christ. There was a tradition among some of the disciples, that those who obeyed the covenant in the last days, would never die: but by experience, they have learned to the contrary. In those days the Lord blessed his disciples greatly, and he gave revelation after revelation, which contained doctrine, instructions, and prophecies: The word of the Lord came to the seer as follows: [text of D&C 45 quoted] (John Whitmer, Book of John Whitmer, chapter 3, paragraphs 7-8) Excerpt from the Painesville Telegraph Fanaticism.-- Died, in Kirtland on Tuesday night last, Mr. Warner Doty, aged about 29 years. The deceased was one of those who had embraced the imposition of Jo Smith, and was a victim to the delusion of Mormonism. He was duly commissioned after their manner, to preach, and was one of the most active and zealous in the cause. So fully did he believe in the divinity of Smith, that he had been made to have full faith that he should live a thousand years -- this he confessed to a near relative some four weeks before his decease. Five days before he expired, he was suddenly attacked with an inflammation in the bowels, which afterwards assumed a typhoid appearance. He was immediately removed to the residence of his parents, who had no faith in the Mormon remedies for the cure of diseases. -- No persuasion could induce the young man to have a physician called, so strong was he impressed with the supernatural powers of Smith. -- Several of the Mormonites soon assembled around the sick man, where they continued to encourage him to persevere, and strengthen his delusion, telling him that he was getting better and soon would be well, till they saw he was about to expire, when they all fled from the house, without offering to assist in the last sad solemnities of the dead. Smith was sent for soon after he was taken sick, and proceeded towards the house of Doty, to heal him, but (as Smith said) he received a command not to go to Doty's and "cast his pearl before swine." He however visited the sick man a day or two after, and said he would get well, and protested against calling a physician. He held his hand upon the head of Doty for 10 or 15 minutes, but with what object is not known. A few hours before the young man expired, Dr. Brainard was sent for, much against the will of the worshippers of Smith, by the interference of other friends. The Doctor immediately pronounced his disease past remedy, and told the mormon doctors that their superstitions had probably been the means of the young man's death, or something of like import. When the young man discovered that death was nigh, his faith in Smith's pretensions seemed to forsake him. He said "What a wonderful mistake I have made," and called all his friends to take his leave. Addressing himself to an old man of the Mormon faith, he said "you are a friend to every body -- I must shake hands with you -- this is a lesson that I have learnt by actual experience, by which you ought to profit, but with me it is too late." The Mormonites will probably contradict many of these statements, as they have many positive facts heretofore; but we have our information from a relative of the disceased, who was present during the last 18 hours of his life, and whose intelligence and veracity will not suffer in comparison with the whole of those deluded people who have adapted Jo Smith as their spiritual leader. MORMONISM IN CHINA. From the Journal of Commerce. CHINA. We have received from a gentleman in the ship Alert, 141 days from Canton, a file of the Canton Register from the beginning of January, 1830, to the 18th October. Canton, July 17. -- A sort of revelation from the gods is now being published by writing, and word of mouth, in every direction, disclosing that this year in the 8th, 9th, and 10th months, a great pestilence will prevail and cause the death of persons innumerable. The first intimation of the approaching judgments was made by the deified astronomer Chang-Teen-Sze, to Tung Talsouyah, of Hoo-pih province, on his way from Pekin, while in Knangyuea district. There will be an abundant harvest this year, but human beings will suffer greatly. The virtuous shall be spared, but the wicked will find it impossible to escape. Those who will not believe shall see. The ground will be covered with dead bodies. At the third watch when the cocks crow, and dogs bark, a malignant god will go forth to slay by the pestilence. Those who hear their names called must be careful not to answer. Those who devoutly fast at the new and full moon shall escape the pestilence. And each individual who writes a copy of the revelation, and publishes it, shall escape. He who writes and publishes ten copies shall save a whole family. Great calamities will fall on him who writes a copy and conceals. Those who cannot write, will by communicating the revelation verbally obtain the same immunities as those who write and publish. (Eber D. Howe, The Painesville Telegraph, Number 42, Vol. II, Tuesday, April 5, 1831) Excerpt from The Doctrine & Covenants: Our Modern Scripture When the Church was almost a year old, the spreading of the gospel message was hampered greatly by many false stories which aroused prejudice against the Latter-day Saints. For example, many newspapers in the area carried the story of a Mormon girl predicting an earthquake in China which caused great destruction just six weeks later. These papers labeled the loss of thousands of lives in that disaster as being “'Mormonism' in China.” (HC, 1:58). This section contains a valid revelation from the Lord describing that which is to come. The revelation is an outstanding example of the benefits flowing from Joseph Smith's “new translation” of the Bible. During the spring of 1831 the Prophet was working on his inspired revision of Matthew, including chapter 24 in which the Savior instructed his disciples concerning the last days. Beginning in verse 16 of section 45 the Lord repeated and amplified many of these teachings and applied them to the circumstances of his Latter-day Saints. Hence “this place” (verse 43) refers to the Holy Land, and “this mount” (verse 48) designates the Mount of Olives. The Lord promised that more concerning “this chapter” (verse 60) would be made known through the Prophet's “translation” of the New Testament; the inspired revision of Matthew 24 is now found in the Pearl of Great Price. (Richard O. Cowan, The Doctrine & Covenants: Our Modern Scripture, pages 78- 79) Excerpt from The Heavens Resound As Joseph Smith and his followers arrived in the Western Reserve and started to establish the Church's headquarters there, many non-Mormons began to respond negatively and even aggressively to the growth of this new faith. Newspaper articles generally misrepresented the history, beliefs, ambitions, and goals of the Saints, as reporters often confused improper beliefs and conduct with orthodox doctrines and behavior. Alarmed by the spirited anti-Mormon campaign, Joseph Smith recorded in his history that in the spring of 1831, “many false reports, lies, and foolish stories, were published in the' newspapers, and circulated in every direction, to prevent people from investigating the work, or embracing the faith.” (HC 1:158) Reports on the Church printed in the Ohio papers before the first missionaries arrived in the Western Reserve were more favorable and unbiased than those published during the 1830s, the period of the gathering in the state. Initially the religion was more a topic of curiosity than of scorn. But after the missionaries baptized some 130 converts in Kirtland and vicinity, the number of articles relating to the Church multiplied rapidly (in fact, more articles appeared in Ohio papers between November 1830 and December 1831 than during any other period), and most of them contained derogatory statements about the Latter-day Saints, setting the tone for a propaganda offensive that continued for a number of years. The editor who, more than any other, planted the seeds for Mormon persecution in Geauga County was Eber D. Howe, who was born in Saratoga County, New York, in 1798. Following the War of 1812, Howe was apprenticed to the publisher of the Buffalo Gazette. He later moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and helped establish the Cleveland Herald in 1818. In 1822 he moved to Painesville, where he rounded the Painesville Telegraph. He was editor of that paper (sometimes working alone, sometimes with the help of a partner) until January 1835. (E. D. Howe, Autobiography and Recollections of a Pioneer Printer, pp. 1, 4, 21, 46; History of Geauga and Lake Counties, Ohio, pp. 29, 223-24) During the years that E.D. Howe was editor of the Telegraph, more disparaging articles on Mormonism appeared in that publication than in any other Ohio newspaper. He personally wrote only a few of the articles, but he also accepted for publication many critical accounts (with truth and error garbled together) about the restored Church. some of the articles were reproduced in other Ohio publications. (See Milton V. Backman, Jr., “Contemporary Accounts of the Latter-day Saints and Their Leaders Appearing in Early Ohio Newspapers.”) Latter-day Saints were not the only targets of Howe's denunciations. He also brought his profusely slanderous language to bear against the Masons and members of various dissident or unorthodox religious societies. He opposed all secret societies in which men “swear to extricate each other...whether right or wrong.” (Painesville Telegraph, January 5, 1830, p. 2) He characterized members of one group as “deluded fanatics,” “monsters,” “demons,” “serpents,” “horned beasts,” “kidnappers,” “arsonists” and “murderers.” (Painesville Telegraph, December 27, 1831, p. 3) Adopting the same approach, Howe and many other journalists of Ohio used discrediting terms to describe the rise of Mormonism. They referred to members of the restored Church as “fanatics,” “a gang of deluded mortals,” “deluded beings,” the “dregs of this community,” “profound believers in witchcraft, ghosts, goblins,” and “inferior satellites.” (Painesville Telegraph, March 22, 1831, p. 2; March 29, 1831, p. 2; August 9, 1832, p. 1; Ohio Repository (Canton), August 30, 1833, p. 2; September 1, 1836, p. 2) Seldom was Joseph Smith called by his full name or even referred to as Joseph; instead, he was disparagingly called “Jo,” “Joe,” or “Joey.” (Painesville Telegraph, March 8, 1831, p. 3; March 22, 1831, p. 2; May 9, 1834, p. 3; November 20, 1835, p. 3) The papers of Ohio branded the Book of Mormon as the “golden bible”; Joseph Smith's family as a “gang of money diggers”; (Painesville Telegraph, March 22, 1831, p. 2; March 29, 1831, p. 2) witnesses to the Book of Mormon as “pious reprobates”; (Painesville Telegraph, March 29, 1831, p. 2) and the revelations recorded by Joseph Smith as “volumes of...trash. (Painesville Telegraph, September 13, 1831, p. 1) While engaged in this relentless attack on the Latter-day Saints, critics not only concocted the term “Mormonites,” but they also formulated a derogatory definition of the word “Mormon.” Quoting from a letter of “Obadiah Dogberry” (an alias of Abner Cole) in the Palmyra Reflector, the Painesville Telegraph repeated Dogberry's alleged discovery that the word “Mormon” came from the Greek word “mormoo.” According to Bailey's Dictionary, “mormoo” meant “bugbear, hobgoblin, raw head, and bloody bones.” Commenting on this definition, Howe announced that the Book of Mormon was “a fiction of hobgoblins and bugbears.” (Painesville Telegraph, March 1,1831, p. 3; Francis W. Kirkham, A New Witness for Christ in America 2:89-96) To correct this absurd definition of “Mormon,” Joseph Smith announced that the word had not been derived from the Greek word “mormoo,” but was a word that meant, literally, “more good.” (Joseph Smith, “To the Editor,” Times and Seasons 4 (May 15, 1843): 194) Numerous accounts of the rise of Mormonism appeared in the 1830s in Ohio newspapers. After publication of the Book of Mormon, several editors published descriptions of it, often accompanied by various conflicting accounts of the rise of the Church. The author of an article entitled “The Golden Bible” in the November 25, 1830, issue of the Cleveland Herald (subsequently reprinted in the Ashtabula Journal and in the Western Reserve Chronicle) admitted that he had not read the book but had “perused it sufficiently to be convinced” that it was “one of the veriest impositions” of that age. The purpose of the publication, this writer concluded, was financial gain. Joseph Smith had sent forth his “twelve Apostles” to sell the book. All this was “new proof that all fools are not dead, and knavery in any garb may yet find votaries [adherents].” (Cleveland Herald, November 25, 1830, p. 3; Ashtabul Journal, December 4, 1830, p. 2; Western Reserve Chronicle (Warren, Ohio), December 9, 1830, p. 1) In another article circulated in the Western Reserve in the spring of 1831, Alexander Campbell stated that the Book of Mormon was a composite of “every error and almost every truth discussed in New York for the last ten years. He [Joseph Smith] decides all the great controversies: infant baptism, ordination, the trinity, regeneration, repentance, justification, the fall of man, the atonement, transubstantiation, fasting, penance, church government, religious experience, the call of the ministry, the general resurrection, eternal punishment, who may baptize, and even the question of free masonry, republican government, and the rights of men. All these topics are repeatedly alluded to.” (Painesville Telegraph, March 15, 1831, p. 1) Many non-Mormon historians even in the twentieth century continue to publish this excerpt from Campbell's analysis. They have evidently failed to make a serious study of the Book of Mormon or even of religious history in general. They seem not to recognize that during the apostolic era, the Middle Ages, the era of the Reformation, and the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, men debated most of the subjects enumerated by Campbell. Consequently, it is not surprising that these topics were also discussed in New York and other parts of America at the time of the publication of the Book of Mormon. In other words, even if Joseph Smith had written the kind of book that Campbell described, it would have been no indication that the book was a product of the controversial subjects “discussed in New York for the past ten years” (1820-1830). Moreover, those who have studied the book recognize that it does not contain precise answers to many of the topics mentioned by Campbell, such as the pattern of church government, free masonry, republican government, and how one receives authority (including the call to the ministry). One of the first descriptions of the origins of the Church appeared in the Painesville Telegraph on September 22, 1829. This article, which had been originally printed in the Palmyra Freeman, alleged that Joseph Smith was visited by “the spirit of the Almighty,” who informed him that an ancient record lay buried in a hill located in the town where he lived. The record had been secured and translated and was being published in Palmyra. (Painesville Telegraph, September 22, 1829, p. 3; American Friend and Marietta Gazette, January 15, 1831, p. 4) The Ohio Star in Ravenna, Ohio, reported on December 9, 1830, that Joseph Smith claimed to have been visited three times in a dream by the “spirit of the Almighty,” which eventually led to the coming forth of the “Golden Bible.” (Ohio Star, December 9, 1830, p. 2) Another account of the origin of Mormonism that was originally published in the Palmyra Reflector and was republished in Ohio in the spring of 1831 connected the birth of the restored Church with a man named Walters. According to this story, Walters was a convicted criminal and “vagabond fortuneteller” who became a close associate of Joseph Smith. Walters, the report continued, was the instrument who persuaded the Smith family to pretend visitations and to bring forth a new book. The tale reached a crescendo with a description of the religious exercises initiated by Walters and observed by his followers, which included the Smith family. After gathering his disciples, the story read, Walters and his “money-digging impostors” carried out a ritual sacrifice of a rooster to a “foul spirit” who was supposedly the “guardian of hidden wealth.” (Painesville Telegraph, March 8, 1831, p. 3) Not only did Ohio journalists of the early 1830s publish diverse and false accounts of the origin of Mormonism; they also ascribed to Mormonism various instances of unusual behavior that transpired in different parts of the world. The Painesville Telegraph, for example, published in 1831 a report that had appeared in the New York Journal of Commerce. It had no connection with the restored Church, yet was entitled “Mormonism in China.” This account, which elicited complaints from Joseph Smith, (HC 1:158) asserted that “a sort of revelation from the gods” had been published in China, disclosing that during the year a great pestilence would erupt. The virtuous, this bulletin added, would be spared, but the wicked would not escape; and the ground would be covered with the bodies of those stricken by the epidemic.
