THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
SECTION 50
Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, at Kirtland, Ohio, May 1831. HC 1: 170—173. The Prophet states that some of the elders did not understand the manifestations of different spirits abroad in the earth, and that this revelation was given in response to his special inquiry on the matter. so-called spiritual phenomena were not uncommon among the members, some of whom claimed to be receiving visions and revelations.

—5, Many false spirits are abroad in the earth; 6—9, Wo unto the hypocrites and those who are cut off from the Church; 10—14, Elders are to preach the gospel by the Spirit; 15—22, Both preachers and hearers need to be enlightened by the Spirit; 23—25, That which doth not edify is not of God; 26—28, The faithful are possessors of all things; 29—36, Prayers of the purified are answered; 37—46, Christ is the Good Shepherd and the Stone of Israel.

[ Many of the themes originally presented in Section 46 are dealt with here in more depth. ]

HEARKEN, O ye elders of my church, and give ear to the voice of the living God; and attend to the words of wisdom which shall be given unto you, according as ye have asked and are agreed as touching the church, and the spirits which have gone abroad in the earth.
Behold, verily I say unto you, that there are many spirits which are false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving the world. [ This should be no surprise as Satan has his missionary efforts expanding just as the Lord does; and all will continue and escalate until the end when Christ again reigns - until then both side will labor with their respective mights. Compare with D&C 46:7-8. ]
And also Satan hath sought to deceive you, that he might overthrow you. [ The only way that Satan can find joy. Campare with D&C 28:11. ]
Behold, I, the Lord, have looked upon you, [ The Lord cannot look upon sin and allow it; but will forgive those who choose to repent D&C 1:30-33 ] and have seen abominations in the church that profess my name.
But blessed are they who are faithful and endure, whether in life or in death, for they shall inherit eternal life.
But wo unto them that are deceivers and hypocrites, [ Those who knowningly lead people away from the truth; ] for, thus saith the Lord, I will bring them to judgment. [ so in otherwords those who have worked to deceive and promoted themselves are really doing the damage to themselves since they will ultimately fail in their work; and will be judged. Whereas; those who have been deceived will be reclaimed see vs 7. ]
Behold, verily I say unto you, there are hypocrites among you, who have deceived some, which has given the adversary power; but behold such shall be reclaimed; [ Just because they will be reclaimed does not mean they may have not been hurt in the process see verse 15&16 - So it is important to remain vigilant to the word of God. ]
But the hypocrites shall be detected and shall be cut off, either in life or in death, even as I will; and wo unto them who are cut off from my church, for the same are overcome of the world.
Wherefore, let every man beware lest he do that which is not in truth and righteousness before me.
And now come, saith the Lord, by the Spirit, unto the elders of his church, and let us reason together, [ The Lord begins an interactive role approach through verse 36; kind of like so it you think this then did you think about that? The cause effect; the cause and effect. sort of if you understand the process or the purpose then it is easier to complete the mission. Akin to Isaiah, cf. Isa. 1:11-12, Isa. 10:3-4, Isa. 21:11-12, Isa. 22:1-2, Isa. 28:24-25. ] that ye may understand; [ The Lord speaks in plainness 2 Ne.25:7. ]
Let us reason even as a man reasoneth one with another face to face.
Now, when a man reasoneth he is understood of man, because he reasoneth as a man; even so will I, the Lord, reason with you that you may understand.
Wherefore, I the Lord ask you this question—unto what were ye ordained? Who are those that are ordained? All who ordained to a calling through the Priesthood. Question 1 see verse 14 for the answer 1)To Preach the gospel 2)The comforter will teach. ]
To preach [ Root: praedicare to cry in public, to proclaim; prae before + dicare to make known, dicere to say; so it then means: To proclaim or publish tidings; specifically, to proclaim the gospel;   . ] my gospel by the Spirit, [ Our role is to preach the gospel by the spirit. ] even the Comforter [ Holy Ghost. ] which was sent forth to teach [ We preach the Holy Ghost teaches. How does he do that? How do we work with him to do that? so our job is to "Preach" the Gospel and the Spirits job is to "Teach" the Gospel by witnessing the truth of what we are saying. ] the truth.
And then received ye spirits which ye could not understand, and received them to be of God; and in this are ye justified? [ Question 2 see verse 16 for the answer. ]
Behold ye shall answer this question yourselves; [ We have to answer - were we willing; is that what we were looking for? were we complicite in any way? Could we have done something to prevent it? So the caution comes now in vs 17-25. ] nevertheless, I will be merciful unto you; he that is weak among you hereafter shall be made strong.
Verily I say unto you, he that is ordained of me and sent forth to preach the word of truth by the Comforter, in the Spirit of truth, doth he preach it by the Spirit of truth or some other way? [ This is to answer the question posed in verse 1. If we are ordained to do his work then it is incumbant upon us to have his spirit to be with us; that is our responsibility. The spirit is important to be present for both the teacher and the student as it is the Spirit that really is teaching. ]
And if it be by some other way it is not of God. [ And if the Spirit is not doing the teaching then it is not of God. ]
And again, he that receiveth the word of truth, doth he receive it by the Spirit of truth or some other way?
If it be some other way it is not of God.
Therefore, why is it that ye cannot understand and know, that he that receiveth the word by the Spirit of truth receiveth it as it is preached by the Spirit of truth?
Wherefore, he that preacheth and he that receiveth, understand one another, and both are edified and rejoice together.
And that which doth not edify is not of God, and is darkness. [ The Lord brings the principle of light into the equation here. What is darkness? It is nothing more than the absence of light. This example serves as a stark contrast as to the difference between teaching with the spirit and without the spirit. The Holy Spirit verses unholy spirit issues from the preceding text of this section as the Holy Spirit is commonly associated with light and the adversary is commonly associated with darkness, John 1:5. So the individual who is not taught by the Spirit and does not receive by the Spirit remains subject to the unholy spirit. ]
That which is of God is light; [ D&C 88:11-13; light does 4 things which we are taught here 1) it actually shines, you can see it. 2) quickeneth your understanding 3) gives life to everything 4) the Law by which all are subject too. ] and he that receiveth light, [ Step 1 receive the light ; respond positively to that light. Two things can happen with light you can absorb it which is what black does; or you can reflect it which is what white does. Also we can compare with Joseph Smiths visit from the Angel Moroni who said "While Joseph remained here, the angel told him, “Now I will show you the distance between light and darkness, and the operation of a good spirit and an evil one. An evil spirit will try to crowd your mind with every evil and wicked thing to keep every good thought and feeling out of your mind, but you must keep your mind always staid upon God, that no evil may come into your heart.” source from the Preliminary Manuscript, Lucy relates that the angel made this comment while Joseph still lay exhausted in the field. ] and continueth in God, receiveth more light; [ So the secret to receiving additional light, guidance, inspiration, knowledge ...is to receive it and respond to what it teaches you to do. Why would the Lord want to give us more light when we do not respond to the light that he has already given? answer is he will not. ] and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day. [ The perfect day referencing a day without clouds; where the light of the son is not blocked by anything. Or to put it another way where the revelations from God the workings of the spirit are not blocked by any thing - we receive them all as they were intended. ]
And again, verily I say unto you, and I say it that you may know the truth, that you may chase darkness from among you; [ If darkness is the absence of light; then when you add light the darkness is gone - it has been chased away. ]
He that is ordained of God and sent forth, the same is appointed to be the greatest, notwithstanding he is the least and the servant of all.
Wherefore, he is possessor of all things; for all things are subject unto him, [ Those who are called and ordained to the work are invested with God's authority, the Priesthood. Thus, the things of heaven and earth are subject to them so long as they act according to the will of God. Given this kind of authority, they can deal appropriately with unholy spirits. ] both in heaven and on the earth, the life and the light, the Spirit and the power, sent forth by the will of the Father through Jesus Christ, his son.
But no man is possessor of all things [ See 2 Peter 1:3 But God is and has given us the power that wereby we might come to understand all things. ] except he be purified and cleansed from all sin. [ This is where the problem for us comes in, we need to repent so that we can become cleansed from all sin. Why? The next verse provides the details of what is ours if we do. ]
And if ye are purified and cleansed from all sin, ye shall ask whatsoever you will in the name of Jesus and it shall be done. [ See D&C 46:28-30 - He that asketh in the spirit shall receive in the spirit. Once you are cleansed from all sin, you can ask the Lord anything in the name of Christ, but you need to ask according to the inspiration of the Spirit. ]
But know this, it shall be given you what you shall ask; [ Why? Because if you are lead and guided by the spirit, then what you ask for will be of the spirit, hence you will only ask for that which the Lord wants to provide. ] and as ye are appointed to the head, [ see D&C 46:29 ] the spirits shall be subject unto you.
Wherefore, it shall come to pass, that if you behold a spirit manifested that you cannot understand, [ What to do when you come across a pirit that you do not understand. ] and you receive not that spirit, ye shall ask of the Father in the name of Jesus; and if he give not unto you that spirit, then you may know that it is not of God.
And it shall be given unto you, power over that spirit; [ Spirits are subject to the righteous priesthood holder. ] and you shall proclaim against that spirit with a loud voice that it is not of God—
Not with railing accusation, that ye be not overcome, neither with boasting nor rejoicing, [ The protection promised here for these ambassitors of the Lord is that they must not take pride and declare that the power that they hold with the priesthood is in any way their power - if so they will be without the protection. ] lest you be seized therewith. [ Overtaken - those who take the priesthood as their own, not Gods will loose the protection. See verse 34. ]
He that receiveth of God, [ If you receive the priesthood from God. ] let him account it of God; [ then remember to give God credit for it ; acknowledge it that it is from God. ] and let him rejoice that he is accounted of God worthy to receive. [ Consider it a blessing that you are considered to receive it. ]
And by giving heed and doing these things which ye have received, and which ye shall hereafter receive—and the kingdom is given you of the Father, and power to overcome all things which are not ordained of him—
And behold, verily I say unto you, blessed are you who are now hearing these words of mine from the mouth of my servant, [ The end of the Q&A session. So you are blessed if you go and do as instructed. ] for your sins are forgiven you.
 Let my servant Joseph Wakefield, in whom I am well pleased, and my servant Parley P. Pratt go forth among the churches and strengthen them by the word of exhortation;
And also my servant John Corrill, or as many of my servants as are ordained unto this office, and let them labor in the vineyard; and let no man hinder them doing that which I have appointed unto them—

Wherefore, in this thing my servant Edward Partridge is not justified; nevertheless let him repent and he shall be forgiven.

[ Note the care and love expressed by the Lord as he closes this section - much like the patteren in 121:43. ]

Behold, ye are little children and ye cannot bear all things now; ye must grow in grace and in the knowledge of the truth.
Fear not, little children, for you are mine, and I have overcome the world, and you are of them that my Father hath given me; [ What are the charastistics that make them different? ]
And none of them that my Father hath given me shall be lost. [ What does he mean by that statement? Lost as to what? ]
And the Father and I are one. I am in the Father and the Father in me; and inasmuch as ye have received me, ye are in me and I in you.
Wherefore, I am in your midst, and I am the good shepherd, [ John 10:11. ] and the stone of Israel. He that buildeth upon this rock shall never fall.
And the day cometh that you shall hear my voice and see me, and know that I am.

Watch, therefore, that ye may be ready. Even so. Amen.

[ Historical Material Pertaining to Doctrine & Covenants 50 Excerpt from History of the Church During the month of April, I continued to translate the Scriptures as time would allow. In May, a number of Elders being present, and not understanding the different spirits11 abroad in the earth, I inquired and received from the Lord the following: [text of D&C 50 quoted] (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, volume 1, page 170) Excerpt from History of the Church soon after the Gospel was established in Kirtland, and during the absence of the authorities of the Church, many false spirits were introduced, many strange visions were seen, and wild, enthusiastic notions were entertained: men ran out of doors under the influence of this spirit, and some of them got upon the stumps of trees and shouted, and all kinds of extravagances were entered into by them; one man pursued a ball that he said he saw flying in the air, until he came to a precipice when he jumped into the top of a tree, which saved his life; and many ridiculous things were entered into, calculated to bring disgrace upon the Church of God, to cause the Spirit of God to be withdrawn, and to uproot and destroy those glorious principles which had been developed for the salvation of the human family. (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, volume 4, page 580) Excerpt from the Book of John Whitmer For a perpetual memory, to the shame and confusion of the devil-permit me, to say a few things, respecting the proceedings of some of those who were disciples, and some remain among us, and will, and have come from under the error and enthusiasm, which they had fallen. some had visions and could not tell what they saw. some would fancy to themselves that they had the sword of Laban, and would wield it as expert as a light dragoon, some would act like an Indian in the act of scalping, some would slide or scoot on the floor, with the rapidity of a serpent, which termed sailing in the boat to the Lamanites, preaching the gospel. And many other vain and foolish maneuvers, that are unmeaning, and unprofitable to mention. Thus the devil blinded the eyes of some good and honest disciples. I write these things to show how ignorant and undiscerning children are and how easy mankind is led astray notwithstanding the things of God that are written, concerning his kingdom. These things grieved the servants of the Lord, and some conversed together on this subject, and others came in and we were at Joseph Smith Jr. the Seers, and made it a matter of consultation, for many would not turn from their folly, unless God would give a revelation, therefore, the Lord spoke to Joseph saying: [text of D&C 50 quoted] (John Whitmer, Book of John Whitmer, chapter 6, paragraphs 7-9) Excerpt from Autobiography of Parley Parker Pratt As I went forth among the different branches, some very strange spiritual operations were manifested, which were disgusting, rather than edifying. some persons would seem to swoon away, and make unseemly gestures, and be drawn or disfigured in their countenances. Others would fall into ecstacies, and be drawn into contortions, cramp, fits, etc. Others would seem to have visions and revelations, which were not edifying, and which were not congenial to the doctrine and spirit of the gospel. In short, a false and lying spirit seemed to be creeping into the Church. All these things were new and strange to me, and had originated in the Church during our absence, and previous to the arrival of President Joseph Smith from New York. Feeling our weakness and inexperience, and lest we should err in judgment concerning these spiritual phenomena, myself, John Murdock, and several other Elders, went to Joseph Smith, and asked him to inquire of the Lord concerning these spirits or manifestations. After we had joined in prayer in his translating room, he dictated in our presence the following revelation:--[D&C 50] Each sentence was uttered slowly and very distinctly, and with a pause between each, sufficiently long for it to be recorded, by an ordinary writer, in long hand. This was the manner in which all his written revelations were dictated and written. There was never any hesitation, reviewing, or reading back, in order to keep the run of the subject; neither did any of these communications undergo revisions, interlinings, or corrections. As he dictated them so they stood, so far as I have witnessed; and I was present to witness the dictation of several communications of several pages each. This inquiry was made and the answer given in May, 1831. (Parley P. Pratt, Autobiography of Parley Parker Pratt, page 48)]
