THE DOCTRINE AND COVENANTS
SECTION 7
Revelation given to Joseph Smith the Prophet and Oliver Cowdery, at Harmony, Pennsylvania, April 1829, when they inquired through the Urim and Thummim as to whether John, the beloved disciple, tarried in the flesh or had died. The revelation is a translated version of the record made on parchment by John and hidden up by himself. HC 1: 35—36.
[ There is not a lot of detail as to what prompted Joseph and Oliver to ask whether John was translated or was dead; but this we do know. This event happened during the first month or so of translation and there is a reference to John in 1 Ne. 114"19-27 So that may give us a clue.
Excerpt from Times and Seasons During the month of April I continued to translate, and he [i.e., Oliver Cowdery] to write, with little cessation, during which time we received several revelations. A difference of opinion arising between us about the account of John the apostle, mentioned in the New Testament, John, twenty first chapter and twenty second verse, whether he died or whether he continued we mutually agreed to settle it by the Urim and Thummim, and the following is the word which we received. [text of D&C 7 follows] (Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, Vol. 3, No. 18, July 15, 1842, page 853 [also appearing in History of the Church, Vol. 1, pages 35-36])
Excerpt from Doctrine and Covenants Commentary The prophet Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery, one day, discussed this passage of the Scriptures, and expressed different views on the meaning of it. In order to come to unity of faith on that question, the Prophet inquired of the Lord and received this Revelation. The question might be asked, whether the Prophet had actually seen the parchment written and hidden by John, or a copy of it; if so, where and when did he obtain it, and what became of it? The history of the Prophet does not furnish information on these subjects. But it is not necessary to suppose that the Prophet had St. John's parchment, or a copy of it, before him, when he received this Revelation. It was the contents of the document that were revealed. It was just as easy for the Spirit of the Lord to communicate the contents of that record to the Prophet, without the actual presence of it, as it would have been to enable him to understand the language in which John wrote it, whether Greek or Aramaean, which languages neither Joseph nor Oliver could have read, except by special divine interposition, even if they had had the manuscript before them. The miracle would have been practically the same. (Hyrum M. Smith and Janne M. Sjodahl, Doctrine and Covenants Commentary, page 40) ]
1—3, John the Beloved shall live until the Lord comes; 4—8, Peter, James, and John hold gospel keys.
1 A
ND the Lord said unto me: John, my beloved, what desirest thou? For if you shall ask what you will, it shall be granted unto you.
2 And
I [ John the beloved/revelator. ] said unto him: Lord,
give unto me power over death,
[ Similar to the events surrounding the translation of the Three Nephites in 3 Ne. 28. ] that I may live and bring souls unto thee.
3 And the Lord said unto me: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, because thou desirest this thou shalt tarry until I come in my glory,
and shalt prophesy before nations, kindreds, tongues and people.
[ Same as Rev 10:11. ]
4
And for this cause the Lord said unto Peter:
[ This is the resurrected Lord speaking to Peter about the promise that he made to John The Beloved. ] If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? For he desired of me that he might
bring souls unto me, [ To feed my sheep. Their responsibility is not to administer the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the responsibility of the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve. The Three Nephites and John are to assist in preparing the House of Israel to receive the Gospel when the Day of the Gentiles is fulfilled. (3 Nephites 3 Ne:28:9,29) ] but thou desiredst that thou mightest speedily come unto me in my kingdom.
[ Peter just wants to return and be with the Lord in a quick fashion. ]
5 I say unto thee, Peter,
this was a good desire;
[ The desire to return back to out Father in Heaven speedily. ] but my beloved has desired that he might do more, or a greater work yet among men than what he has before done.
6 Yea,
he [ John the Beloved. ] has undertaken a greater work;
[ Here the Lord indicates the responsibilities and assignments of those who are translated. ] therefore
[1] I will make him as flaming fire [ The Lord makes his ministers a flaming fire, Ps. 104:4. ] and
[2] a ministering angel;
[3] he shall minister for those who shall be heirs of salvation who dwell on the earth. [ He will minister to the good people of the earth, those who are trying to follow God. ]
7 And
I will make thee [ Peter. ] to minister for him [ John The Beloved. ] and for thy brother James; and unto you three
I will give this power and the keys of this ministry until I come. [ Since John's mortal ministry has not ended he would still hold these keys. First the Savior puts a limit on how long he will hold the keys. That would make him the only mortal alive today that was given these keys directly from Jesus Christ himself, and will hold them until The Savior returns to the earth. This teaches us something here of how the world will be governed after Christ returns in glory. Savior notes that the “power and the keys of the ministry” are given to Peter, James, and John. These power and keys are later defined as “the keys of the kingdom, and of the dispensation of the fulness of times.” These keys were in turn passed on to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery by Peter, James, and John “in the wilderness between Harmony, Susquehanna county, and Colesville, Broome County, on the Susquehanna river” (D&C 128:20). Joseph Smith had these keys conferred upon him, but John is the one who still holds the keys. Joseph Smith stated that JOhn was currently living among the Lost Ten Tribes. In a conference of the Church on 3 June 1831, the Prophet Joseph Smith taught concerning John’s ministry: “John the Revelator was then among the Ten Tribes of Israel who had been led away by Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, to prepare them for their return from their long dispersion” (History of the Church, 1:176). Think about it. If John were still on this earth (which he is not according to Joseph Smith) and he held the keys of ministry. Then how could one possible answer the temple question "Do you believe that the President of the Church is the ONLY man on the earth who is AUTHORIZED to EXERCISE ALL PRIESTHOOD KEYS?" ]
8 Verily I say unto you, ye shall both have according to your desires,
for ye both [ The Savior is quoted when speaking to both John and Peter. ] joy in that which ye have desired.
