HEBREWS
CHAPTER 4
The gospel was offered to ancient Israel—Saints enter into the rest of the Lord—Though tempted in all points, Jesus was without sin.
1 LET us therefore fear, lest, a promise
being left us of entering into his rest, [ Defined as "gaining the fulness of his Glory" D&C 84:24] any
of you should seem to come short of it.
2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.
4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.
6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief:
7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.
10 For he that is entered into his rest, [ Everyone is invited to join God in his rest, which is another way to say he invites everyone to join him in his temple(the place where he rested at the end of the creation, eternal life), a privilege that’s restricted to the obedient. ] he also hath ceased from his own works, [ Took the sabbath off, He worked six days and on the sabbath he rested. ] as God did from his. [ God's work here was the creation. ]
11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the son of God, [ He is not the son of Joseph. He is not the son of a man. This title the son Of God means that his Father is literally God our Father in Heaven. As the son of a man he would not have the power to work out the atonement. ] let us hold fast our profession.
15 For we have not an high priest [ Where do we put the emphasis? Is Jesus God or is he human? We want him to be God because all of the things that he can do as a God to enable the atonement to work, but we also want him to be human because it's his humanness that allows us to connect with him in a powerful and important way. He doesn't just know us intellectually, but he knows our experiences because he has experienced us, all of the trials and the difficulties of what a mortal life is all about. ] which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore come boldly [ Come with confidence to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. We can come forward with confidence because we do know that Jesus has as his Father - God, who has the power to the atonement possible. Then as his mother Mary, a mortal who provides the feelings and the experiences of a mortal experiences, suffering, pain, death, hungry, sleep. Why is it important that Jesus had Mary as a mother, a mortal and God as a father? If we were to take out the fact that God was Jesus' father and just admit that Joseph was it, then my first thought, well, what would that mean to Christ’s atoning sacrifice? If God isn't his father, the atonement doesn't work. Then, I went next step further and then thought, well, what happens if we took Mary out of the equation? The atonement of Jesus Christ also wouldn't work. I don't think we often think about it that way, but there's part of Jesus being mortal. ] unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
