CHAPTER 8
Christ offered himself as a sacrifice for sin—God promised to make a new covenant with Israel.
1 NOW of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.
3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.
4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:
5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. [ Mount Sinai - It was God who wanted to give the endowment to the children if Israel there, but they refused. So he gave the command to build the tabernacle which acted as the first temple of the children of Israel The tabernacle in the wilderness was made after the bounds set by God for Mt Sinai. See Ex 19 ]
6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, [ If the children of Israel would have not rejected the offer of the endowment they would have had a greater covenant with God, or the one that he wanted them to have. ] which was established upon better promises. [ The benefits to the children of Israel would have been greater if they would have received it on Sinai from God. ]
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second.
8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days [ Is he suggesting the latter days? ] come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: [ The New and Everlasting covenant? ]
9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, [ When the children of Israel were still on the other side of the Jordan, the Lord told them that when they entered the promised land there should be a place where the Lord their God would “cause his name to dwell.” (Deut. 12:11; see also Deut. 14:23–24; Deut. 16:6.) Time after time in succeeding revelations, the Lord and his servants referred to the future temple as a house for “the name” of the Lord God of Israel. (See 1 Kgs. 3:2; 1 Kgs. 5:5; 1 Kgs. 8:16–20, 29, 44, 48; 1 Chr. 22:8–10, 19; 1 Chr. 29:16; 2 Chr. 2:4; 2 Chr. 6:5–10, 20, 34, 38.) ] and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make [ God is personally making this covenant with his people, those who are willing to do as instructed in D&C 93:1. ] with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will [ Note that it is God himself who is personally doing this. He cannot do this unless they are willing to submit to him in all things. ] put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: [ In other words it is God himself who is teaching them. See the next verse. ] and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
11 And they shall not teach [ Why will we not need to teach each other? ] every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, [ Because all will know him and be taught by him. The message here is that we need to come to know the Lord. There are things that ONLY he can teach us. Things that would be inappropriate for any other mortal being to instruct you in. ] , from the least to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
13 In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
