ISAIAH
CHAPTER 22
Jerusalem shall be attacked and scourged—Her people shall be carried captive—Messiah shall hold the key of the house of David, inherit glory, and be fastened as a nail in a sure place.
1 THE burden of
the valley of vision. What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone
up to the housetops? [The houses in the east were
in ancient times, as they are still, generally, built in one and the
same uniform manner. The roof or top of the house is always flat, covered
with broad stones, or a strong plaster of terrace, and guarded on every
side with a low parapet wall; see Deuteronomy xxii. 8. The terrace is
frequented as much as any part of the house. On this, as the season favours,
they walk, they eat, they sleep, they transact business, The house is
built with a court within, into which chiefly the windows open: those
that open to the street are so obstructed with lattice-work that no one
either without or within can see through them. Whenever, therefore, any thing
is to be seen or heard in the streets, any public spectacle, any alarm of a
public nature, every one immediately goes up to the house-top to satisfy his
curiosity. In the same manner, when any one has occasion to make any thing
public, the readiest and most effectual way of doing it is to proclaim it from
the house-tops to the people in the streets. "What ye
hear in the ear, that publish ye on the house-top, "saith our saviour,
Matthew x. 27. The people running all to the tops of their houses gives
a lively image of a sudden general alarm. Clarke]
2 Thou that art full of stirs, a tumultuous city, a joyous city: thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.
3 All thy rulers are fled together, they are bound by the archers: all that are found in thee are bound together, which have fled from far.
4 Therefore said I, Look away from me; I will weep bitterly, labour not to comfort me, because of the spoiling of the daughter of my people.
5 For it is a day of trouble, and of treading down, and of perplexity by the Lord GOD of hosts in the valley of vision, breaking down the walls, and of crying to the mountains.
7 And it shall come to pass, that thy choicest valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall set themselves in array at the gate.
8 ¶ And he discovered the covering of Judah, and thou didst look in that day to the armour of the house of the forest.
9 Ye have seen also the breaches of the city of David, that they are many: and ye gathered together the waters of the lower pool.
10 And ye have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and the houses have ye broken down to fortify the wall.
11 Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago.
12 And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:
13 And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die. [ "Think for a moment, of the greatness of the Being who created the Universe; and ask, could He be so inconsistent with His own character, as to leave man without a law or rule by which to regulate his conduct, after placing him here, where, according to the formation of his nature he must in a short period sink into the dust? Is there nothing further; is there no existence beyond this veil of death which is so suddenly to be cast over all of us? If there is, why not that Being who had power to place us here, inform us something of the hereafter? If we had power to place ourselves in this present existence, why not have power to know what shall follow when that dark veil is cast over our bodies? If in this life we receive our all; if when we crumble back to dust we are no more, from what source did we emanate, and what was the purpose of our existence? If this life were all, we should be led to query, whether or not there was really any substance in existence, and we might with propriety say, “Let us eat, drink, and be merry, for to-morrow we die!” But if this life is all, then why this constant toiling, why this continual warfare, and why this unceasing trouble? But this life is not all; the voice of reason, the language of inspiration, and the Spirit of the living God,our Creator, teaches us, as we hold the record of truth in our hands, that this is not the case, that this is not so; for, the heavens declare the glory of a God, and the firmament showeth His handiwork;and a moment’s reflection is sufficient to teach every man of common intelligence, that all these are not the mere productions of chance, nor could they be supported by any power less than an Almighty hand; and He that can mark the power of Omnipotence, inscribed upon the heavens, can also see God’s own handwriting in the sacred volume: and he who reads it oftenest will like it best, and he who is acquainted with it, will know the hand wherever he can see it; and when once discovered,it will not only receive an acknowledgment, but an obedience to all its heavenly precepts. For a moment reflect: what could have been the purpose of our Father" Teachings Of The Prophet Joseph Smith pg 56. ]
14 And it was revealed in mine ears by the LORD of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
15 ¶ Thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,
16 What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high, and that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock?
18 He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: t [ I am going to kick you our of the kingdom. Because you have been an unworthy steward Shebna, because the King can no longer trust you. ] there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord’s house.
20 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:
[ So here we have King Hezekiah sending someone that he can trust and he is suggesting that you can trust him too. So Eliakim is a symbol for Christ, the one that the father can trust to hold the keys to the kingdom (See vs 22), to let in the right people. Christ wants us all to be there but he must also make sure that only those who are worthy are allowed to enter the Father's presence. ]
21 And I will clothe him with thy
robe, [ Anciently a robe was given to one in government office as an ensign of power and authority, here he is being clothed
in the offices in the govenrment of God - symbolic of the robes placed
on the sholder in the temple. ] and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I [ The King - God the Father. ] will commit thy government into his hand: [ His righteous servant, the one that he can Trust - Jesus Christ. ] : and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
22 And the key of
the house of David [ The priesthood and all of
the keys there of belong to the savior. the power and authority to open
the doors which lead mankind to eternal life. Rev 3:7-8. ] will
I lay upon his shoulder; [ The
robe and the baldric, mentioned in the preceding verse, were the ensigns
of power and authority, so likewise was the key the mark of office. Think
about the temple, robe on the sholder mark of power and authority. ] so
he shall open, [ The doors were opened for eternal life by and thru the resurrection. ] and none shall shut; and he
shall shut, [ This is a direct reference to Christ See Rev 3:7. He Christ will be the judge 2 Ne 9:41. ] and none shall
open. [ His Christs decision will be final. ]
23 And I will fasten him [ The righteous servant - Jesus Christ. ] as a nail in a sure place; [ You can hang anything that you need to upon this nail and it will not fail you. Nail in a sure place can be defined clearly in other circumstances but has an additional meaning that can be derived from this verse, namely a binding that will save… a binding to the Atonement of the Savior… and the Savior then binding us together in Him to all the blessings our Father has to give us. Obvious reference to the crucifixation;
but also note "A nail In ancient times, and in the eastern countries,
as the way of life, so the houses, were much more simple than ours at
present. “The ‘nail in a sure place’ (Isaiah 22:23) is messianic and symbolizes the terrible reality of the cross, though only a part of the total suffering of the Lord that caused Him to ‘tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit’ (D&C 19:18). Just as the nail of the cross that was driven in the sure place secured the body of the nail of the cross that was driven in the sure place secured the body of the one being crucified, so the Savior Himself is, to all who will, a nail in a sure place, for He has given them power so that none need be lost (see John 17:12). As Christ brings the redeemed to the Father, the glory becomes His own, and the redeemed AND THEIR OFFSPRING WILL BECOME PART OF THE FAMILY OF HEAVEN under the throne of Christ (see D&C 19:2; Matt 28:18; 1 Cor 15:27-28; Phil 2:5-11; 3:21).” (A Voice of Warning to the Wicked (Isaiah 13-23) These spikes they worked into the walls at the first erection
of them, the walls being of such materials that they could not bear their
being driven in afterwards; were of necessary and common use, and of
no small importance" Clarke so can we conclude that the Savior was instituted
as the nail or pin at the foundation of the world - he would live a perfect
life correct and inmovable just as the nail that is placed in the wall
during construction is imovable. ] and
he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s
house.
24 And they shall hang upon him all
the glory of his father’s house, [ The Savior
is the son of God and as such is entitled to inherit his estate from
the father - hence all the the Father has is his also because he is his
son; so it is with us we often do not really think about it this way
but we too are sons and daughters of God - we to can inherit all that
the Father has - that is pretty remarkable to think about. ] the
offspring [ Those that choose to become spiritually adopted by Jesus Christ by making sacred covenants with him, and taking
upon themselves his name - put the atonement into effect in their lives] and
the issue, all vessels of small quantity [ Small. ],
from the vessels of cups, [ Medium. ] even to all
the
vessels of flagons. [ Super
sized "Meaner vessels" seems to mean earthen vessels of common use, brittle, and of little value. ]
25 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts,
shall the nail
that is fastened [ What
is hanging on that nail? vs 24 They shall hang
upon him all vessels of small quantity and large quantity, or dependence
of all souls of the ability of the savior to complete his mission, of
all capacities, from the lowest in intellect (vessels of small quantity)
to the most exalted (vessels of flagons larger vessels) ] in
the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden
that was upon
it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath
spoken it.
