JOSEPH SMITH—MATTHEW
Jesus foretells the impending destruction of Jerusalem—He also discourses on the second coming of the son of Man, and the destruction of the wicked.
1 aFOR I say unto you, [ Verses 1-20 are about the timeframe from when Christ delivered the message right before His death until the destruction of the temple in 70 AD. Then, verse 21 forward is about the last days right before He returns. And it is a message specifically to covenant saints in the last days. ] that ye shall not see me henceforth and know that I am he of whom it is written by the prophets, until ye shall say: Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord, in the clouds of heaven, and all the holy angels with him. Then understood his disciples that he should come again on the earth, after that he was glorified and crowned on the right hand of God.
2 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple; and his disciples came to him, for to hear him, saying: Master, show us concerning the buildings of the temple, as thou hast said—They shall be thrown down, and left unto you desolate.
3 And Jesus said unto them: See ye not all these things, and do ye not understand them? Verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here, upon this temple, one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.
4 And Jesus left them, and went upon the Mount of Olives. And as he sat upon the Mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying: Tell us when shall these things be which thou hast said concerning the destruction of the temple, and the Jews; and what is the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world, or the destruction of the wicked, which is the end of the world?
7 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you, and ye shall be hated of all nations, for my name’s sake;
12 When you, therefore, shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, concerning the destruction of Jerusalem, [ Happened about 70 AD. When the Roman Empero, Caligula, who claimed to be a god, commissioned a golden statue of his image to be placed within the Holy of Holies in Jerusalem.
When the Jews learned of this, they went wild with rebellion. When the statue arrived, they destroyed it. Their defiance set in motion a chain of events that culminated in the total destruction of Jerusalem, and the death of over 90% of its inhabitants. The remaining population that survived was carried into Rome as slaves. ] then you shall stand in the holy place; whoso readeth let him understand.
18 For then, in those days, shall be great tribulation on the Jews, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, such as was not before sent upon Israel, of God, since the beginning of their kingdom until this time; no, nor ever shall be sent again upon Israel.
19 All things which have befallen them are only the beginning of the sorrows which shall come upon them.
20 And except those days should be shortened, there should none of their flesh be saved; but for the elect’s sake, according to the covenant, those days shall be shortened.
21 Behold, these things I have spoken unto you concerning the Jews; and again, [ Many signs occurred before 70 AD and will occur “again” before Christ returns. ] after the tribulation of those days which shall come upon Jerusalem, if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there, believe him not;
22 For in those days [ Or in the last days. He is talking about a separate time are “again”, “in those days” and “speak for mine elect’s sake”. ] there shall also arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch, that, if possible, [ How is it possible that one of the elect could be deceived? 1) They did not see it coming; 2) They are not heeding the Lords commandments; 3) They are not studying the scripture which the Lord has given for us to understand what is happening. HE is giving a stern warning that just having faith may not be enough. ] they [ The antichrist and his minions. ] shall deceive [ Will cause them to look else where, to go astray. Why? Because the wisdom and the power displayed by the antichrist will be so powerful that it will be as almost how can one not believe in them. This will be the case for some time until the true Messiah comes and then things will appear to be more obvious as he puts the antichrist in his place, then people will see the one with the true power. But until then the other will appear to be as a God, especially to those who are not prepared. At that time many of the elect will be shocked that they did not see it beforehand, that they were duped. This is the reason why the prophet is pleading with us to "hear him". Eventually the marvelous work will cause the wisdom of the world to perish (2 Ne. 27:26) ] the very elect, who are the elect according to the covenant. [ Here he defines the elect as those who have made covenants with him in “those days”. ]
23 Behold, I speak these things unto you for the elect’s sake; [ Those who have made a covenant with him. Verse 22. ] and you also shall hear of wars, and rumors of wars; see that ye be not troubled, [ At the time when all you hear about in the world is war and the rumor of war. Pretty much how the world is right now.] for all I have told you must come to pass; but the end is not yet.
[ So when you hear about all of these wars that does not mean that it is the time of his coming quite yet. ]
25 Wherefore, if they shall say unto you: Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: Behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not;
26 For as the light of the morning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west, and covereth the whole earth, so shall also the coming of the son of Man [ Title for Christ - The "son of God" and the "son of Man" are synonymous... In the pure Adamic language, the name Elohim means "the Gods" it is (plural) in hebrew, the Father, is "Man of Holiness" (signifying that God is a Holy Man), and the name of Christ, the son, is short for "son of Man of Holiness" (Mormon Doctine p671; Moses 6:57. ] be.
27 And now I show unto you a parable. Behold, wheresoever the carcass [ The restored gospel. ] is, there will the eagles be gathered together; so likewise shall mine elect [ Mine elect, my people, my church are those that hear my voice and harden not their hearts D&C 29:7 that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem.
Moses 7:62 - among my people who do repent and are baptized in my name
- 3 Nephi 18:16 it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel
- 3 Nephi 27:8 for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do 3 Nephi 27:21. ] be gathered from the four quarters of the earth.
29 Behold I speak for mine elect’s sake; for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
30 And again, because iniquity shall abound, the love of men shall wax cold; [ Their love for God, their love for themselves as eternal children of God - so they choose the tempral over the eternal. Will wax cold - or there will be no real feeling of love one to another. They will treat each other as cold dead flesh. This will happen in the form of divisive social unrest, gender neutrality, racial division. Every plan and scheme that can be devised to make men become and care only for themselves - you be you and the world will have to honor that. Which creates a separation in men, we are not working for tings together, we are all just individuals - with no care for one another. One can quickly see who's plan that is, however; in the surface it will be hard to see as one might feel that they are part of one group and loved by that group in the morning only to be completely shut out by another group later in the day. Which leads to a desensitization of individuals, which then leads to hatred, civil unrest and then the destruction of common decency. ] but he that shall not be overcome, [ https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/.../2022/10/47nelson...
] the same shall be saved.
31 And again, this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come, or the destruction of the wicked;
32 And again [ Or the same thing that started the first Abomination of desolation - the love of men had grown cold, will be the same thing that starts the second Abomination of desolation. ] shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, be fulfilled. [ Which was what exactly? Abomination of desolation. Daniel spoke prophetically of a day when there would be “the abomination that maketh desolate” (Dan. 11:31; 12:11), and the phrase was recoined in New Testament times to say “the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet”
(Matt. 24:15).Conditions of desolation, born of abomination and wickedness,
were to occur twice in fulfillment of Daniel’s words. The first was to be when
the Roman legions under Titus, in A.D. 70, laid siege to Jerusalem (Matt. 24:15;
JS—M 1:12).Speaking of the last days, of the days following the restoration
of the gospel and its declaration “for a witness unto all nations,” our Lord
said: “And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the
prophet, be fulfilled” (JS—M 1:31–32). That is, Jerusalem again will be under
siege.In a general sense, abomination of desolation also describes the latter-day
judgments to be poured out upon the wicked wherever they may be. And so that
the honest in heart may escape these things, the Lord sends his servants forth
to raise the warning voice, to declare the glad tidings of the restoration,
lest “desolation and utter abolishment” come upon them. The elders are commanded
to reprove “the world in righteousness of all their unrighteous and ungodly
deeds, setting forth clearly and understandingly the desolation of abomination
in the last days” (D&C 84:114, 117; 88:84–85). Bible Dictionary ]
33 And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, [ The explanation of this passage was published in the Millennial Star. The source is a letter written between two early apostles of the restoration, Joseph Fielding and Parley P. Pratt Consider this very interesting letter:
Dear Brother Pratt, - Having a desire to know the truth of all things that are revealed from God to man, and knowing in part the importance of teaching them to mankind, I take the liberty to ask you certain questions, which if you think proper, you may answer in the Star, as I ask not for my own information alone, but for all who desire and seek after truth.
Question 7: (Fielding) How can the stars fall from heaven to Earth, when they, as far as we know, are much larger than the Earth?
Answer: (Pratt) We are nowhere given to understand that all the stars will fall or even many of them: but only "as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs when she is shaken with a mighty wind". The stars which fall to the Earth are fragments [bodies of people), which have been broken off [carried away] from the Earth from time to time...
These all must be restored again at the times of restitution of all things. This will restore the ten tribes to Israel; and also bring again Enoch's city.
(Millennial Star Vol 1, No 10, p. 258, Feb 1841,
Question 7)
According to Elder Pratt, the stars that fall from the sky, will not be stars at all. They will be lights in the sky that from our vantage point will appear like the light of stars. These heavenly lights will come forth from the depths of space and bring with them large bodies of the human family long since absent. This will involve the restoration of the main body of the House of Israel - - - the Lost Ten Tribes.
Most members of the Church have not studied the restoration of the House of Israel, and therefore assume that the Lost Ten Tribes are to be gathered through missionary work.
This is only part of the story. The tenth Article of Faith states:
We believe in the literal gathering of Israel AND restoration of the lost Ten Tribes " The House of Israel is therefore a composition of two separate events. First the gathering of Israel through missionary work and second the restoration of Israel through a restoration event. "Since their captivity they have never yet returned to their homeland, but extensive promises and prophecies speak of the time when they of the “north countries” shall return when they are ready to obey the gospel. The gathering of the lost tribes is to be a more spectacular event than the children of Israel coming out of Egypt in Moses’ day. Prophecies of their return are: Isa. 11:10–16; Jer. 3:18; 16:14–21; 1 Ne. 22:4–12; 2 Ne. 10:21–22; 3 Ne. 15:13–15; 16:1–5; D&C 133:26–35." Israel, Kingdom of Bible Dictionary. ] and the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
34 Verily, I say unto you, this generation, in which these things shall be shown forth, [ The Stout Horn taking away the daily sacrifice, defiling the house of God, and pushing down the saints of God. Then these thing (signs) as promised in JSM 1:27-36 the stars falling from heaven - the restoration of the lost ten tribes. See Duet 30:1-4. ] shall not pass away until all I have told you shall be fulfilled.
[ some people suggest that “this generation" is talking about the generation of the original 12 apostles who Jesus was speaking to. But another way to look at it is he is saying the generation who sees the signs being described (our generation). Or once the signs start happening they happen relatively quickly- not over multiple generations. ]
35 Although, the days will come, that heaven and earth shall pass away; yet my words shall not pass away, but all shall be fulfilled.
36 And, as I said before, after the tribulation of those days, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken, then shall appear the sign of the son
of Man [ Title for Christ - The "son of God" and the "son of Man" are synonymous... In the pure Adamic language, the name Elohim means "the Gods" it is (plural) in hebrew, the Father, is "Man of Holiness" (signifying that God is a Holy Man), and the name of Christ, the son, is short for "son of Man of Holiness" (Mormon Doctine p671; Moses 6:57. ] in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn; and they shall see the son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory;
37 And whoso treasureth up my word, shall not be deceived, for the son of Man shall come, and he shall send his angels before him with the great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together the remainder of his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
38 Now learn a parable of the afig-tree—When its branches are yet tender, and it begins to put forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh at hand;
39 so likewise, mine elect, [ Mine elect, my people, my church are those that hear my voice and harden not their hearts D&C 29:7 that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem. 40 But of that day, and hour, no one knoweth; no, not the angels of God in heaven, but my Father only.
41 But as it was in the days of Noah, so it shall be also at the coming of the son
of Man; [title for Christ - The "son of God" and
the "son of Man" are synonymous... In the pure Adamic language, the

(Mormon Doctine p671; Moses 6:57]
42 For it shall be with them, as it was in the days which were before the flood; for until the day that Noah entered into the ark they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage;
43 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the son of Man be.
44 Then shall be fulfilled that which is written, that in the last days, two shall be in the field, the one shall be taken, and the other left;
46 And what I say unto one, I say unto all men; watch, therefore, for you know not at what hour your Lord doth come.
47 But know this, if the good man of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to have been broken up, but would have been ready.
48 Therefore be ye also ready,
for in such an hour as ye think not, the son
of Man [ Title for Christ - The "son of God" and

49 Who, then, is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season?
50 Blessed is that servant whom his lord, when he cometh, shall find so doing; and verily I say unto you, he shall make him ruler over all his goods.
53 The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,
