JOSEPH SMITH TRANSLATION
ISAIAH 42: 19-23
The Lord will send his servant unto those that are blind. (compare Isaiah 42: 19-22)
19 For I will send my servant [ Jesus Christ. Who did he go to? He was sent to the house of Israel, he did not go to the Gentiles. ] unto you who are blind; [ That is us, those of the house of Israel. Yes; while the Jews did not get the fact that Jesus Christ was with them , I ask are we really any better off? Do we understand his mission to return any better than the Jews understood his first mission? ] yea, a messenger to open the eyes of the blind, and unstop the ears of the deaf;
[ Or to see things in a new way. ]
20 And they shall be made perfect notwithstanding their blindness, if they will hearken [ Hebrew "Shema" is translated here as hearken which means to "listen" and "obey". See Alma 12:9-11 "according to the heed and diligence... " ] unto the messenger, the Lord’s servant.
21 Thou are a people, [ The House Of Israel. ] seeing many things, [ You see the signs that he has promised. ] but thou observest not; [ You see the signs but do NOT recognize them, or do any thing with them. ] opening the ears to hear, but thou hearest not.
