THE BOOK OF MORMON
CHAPTER 8
The Lamanites seek out and destroy the Nephites—The Book of Mormon
shall come forth by the power of God—Woes pronounced upon those who
breathe out wrath and strife against the work of the Lord—The Nephite
record shall come forth in a day of wickedness, degeneracy, and
apostasy. [Between A.D. 400 and 421]
1 BEHOLD I, Moroni,
do finish the record of my father, Mormon. [ Moroni begins his writing and becomes the final author or this record. How hard must it have been for him to know that his father is dying, that he is living in fear of his life every moment of every day. ] Behold, I have but
few things to write, [ What do you suppose that he means by that? Have you ever written down a talk or prepared a list of things that you want done and then after you get the chance to give the talk or share the list, you come up with a few more things that you want to make sure are included. I suppose that Mormon told Moroni that he needs to make
sure that he includeds this or that; or bring to the attention of
further readers this and that. ] which things I have been commanded by my father.
2 And now it came to pass that
after the great and tremendous battle at Cumorah,
[ Mormon 6:11-15 were some 230,000 lost their lives in the battle. ] behold,
the Nephites who had escaped into the country southward were hunted by the Lamanites, until they were all destroyed.
[ so what kind of an outlook on life does this have for Moroni? Not a very good chance for him of survival - right. How do you think you would feel if you were in this position? ]
3 And my father also was killed by them, and
I even remain alone to write the sad tale of the destruction of my people.
[ If you pause for a brief moment you can almost hear the pains in his voice as he reflects on his life, and what is before him. His father had prayed and asked that Moroni would survive at least long enought to document the final events of their destruction Moroni 9:22. ] But behold, they are gone, and
I fulfil the commandment of my father. And whether they will slay me, I know not.
4 Therefore I will write and hide up the records in the earth; and whither I go it mattereth not.
5 Behold, my father hath made
this record, [ The plates that Moroni now is holding, that were prepared by his father Mormon which will later come forth as the Book Of Mormon. ] and
he hath written the intent thereof. [ Which was what again exactly? See Mormon chapter 7 - the famous promise from Mormon. ] And behold, I would write it also if I had room upon the plates, but I have not;
and ore I have none, for I am alone.
[ I suppose that even if he found ore he would need to be very careful in smelting it as a fire would call attention to his where-abouts, and without a large fire he could not make plates. However, circumstances do change sufficiently that he apparently does get more ore and make plates, hence the books Moro. 1:1 and Moro. 1:4. Does his getting ore and making plates mean he is not alone? Perhaps he came into the company of some other Nephites, as Moro. 1:2 suggests some other Nephites did survive. But it seems unlikely as whenever he does comment on his personal situation he is always alone and on the run. ] My father hath been slain in battle, and all my kinsfolk, and
I have not friends nor whither to go; and how long the Lord will suffer that I may live I know not.
[ Can you imagine - you are all alone in this great big world. You have no place to call home, no place for protection. I think that Moroni does not think that he is going to last very long in this environment. He knows he need to finish the record - so he begins. ]
6 Behold,
*four hundred years have passed away since the coming of our Lord and Savior. [ The prophetic predictions concerning the destruction of the Nephites has been fulfilled, cp. Alma 45:10, 3 Ne. 27:32. ]
7 And behold, the Lamanites have hunted my people, the Nephites, down from city to city and from place to place, even until they are no more; and great has been their fall; yea, great and marvelous is the destruction of my people, the Nephites.
8 And
behold, it is the hand of the Lord [ Semetically it means the Lord has used his power with regard to mankind. sometimes it is an overt and miraculous manifestation (cf. Exod. 7:5, Joshua 4:23-24), but more often it
is a covert manifestation through social engineering (cf. Deut.
2:14-15, Judges 2:14-15, 1 Sam. 7:13, Isa. 19:16, Isa. 41:20, 1
Ne. 5:14, 2 Ne. 5-6). ] which hath done it. And behold also,
the Lamanites are at war one with another; and the whole face of this land
is one continual round of murder and bloodshed; and no one knoweth the
end of the war.
[ Researchers with the
LIDAR project in northern Guatemala have been particularly surprised by
"the ubiquity of defensive walls, ramparts, terraces, and fortresses,"
leading to "suprising insights into ... the militarization in the Maya
Lowlands." Other recent findings demonstrate impressive chronological
correlation between widespread fortifications in the Maya lowlands and
the Book of Mormon. Endemic warfare over centuries was norm and warfare
was particularly prevalent in the early classic AD 250–500, consistent
with the timing of final wars of the Nephites and continued warfare
thereafter among the Lamanites. ca. AD 400 ]
9 And now, behold, I say no more concerning them, for there are none save it be the Lamanites and robbers that do exist upon the face of the land.
10 And there are none that do know the true God save it be
the disciples of Jesus,
[ The Three Nephites. ] who did tarry in the land until the wickedness of the people was so great that the Lord would not suffer them to remain with the people; and whether they be upon the face of the land no man knoweth.
11 But behold, my father and I have seen them, [ The Three Nephites. ] and they have ministered unto us.
[ Moroni comments is verse 13-16 addressing those who will act favorably to the records. ]
12 And whoso receiveth this record, and shall not condemn it because of the imperfections which are in it, the same shall know of greater things than these. Behold,
I am Moroni;
[ What is one of the unique charactistics of Moroni? Here has seen the Savior and our day. Mormon 8:35 ] and
were it possible, I would make all things known unto you.
[ Does
this mean that he knows all things, or just that he would like the
reader to be able to know all things as they teach of the goodiness of
God? ]
13 Behold,
I make an end of speaking concerning this people. I am the son of Mormon, and my father was a descendant of Nephi.
[ It is almost as if he stops at this place - did he plan to end he record here, was he out of ore - he appears as if to be giving his closing statement - It appears that something happens to him between verse 13 and 14 - maybe a vision. ]
14 And I am the same who hideth up this record unto the Lord; the plates thereof are of no worth, because of the commandment of the Lord. For he truly saith that no one shall have them to get gain; but the record thereof is of great worth; and whoso shall bring it to light, him will the Lord bless.
15 For
none can have power to bring it to light save it be given him of God;
[ For one the language is being lost with the death of Moroni. So they will need to be translated by the power of God. ] for
God wills that it shall be done with an eye single to his glory, or the
welfare of the ancient and long dispersed covenant people of the Lord.
16 And blessed be he [ He (Joseph Smith) will need to be blessed by God with special power in order to perform the translation of these records as the language will be gone with the passing of Moroni. ] that shall bring this thing to light; for it shall be brought out of darkness unto light, according to the word of God; yea, it shall be brought out of the earth, and it shall shine forth out of darkness, and come unto the knowledge of the people; and it shall be done by the power of God.
[ Moroni comments is verse 17-22 addressing those who will act unfavorably to the records. ]
17
And if there be faults [ Moroni is addressing those who attack the Book Of Mormon with any flaw. So if it applied to Moroni when he was trying his best to write; and there was a flaw in the writing; then it should also address any flaws as a result of Joseph Smith trying to translate it. See Matt 7:3-5. ] they be the faults of a man.
[ Another way to look at this phrase might be. that the records are perfect, and if anyone thinks they are not well maybe they do not really know either; hence they are faults in how the critic sees them. ] But behold, we know no fault; nevertheless God knoweth all things; therefore, he that condemneth, let him be aware lest he shall be in danger of hell fire.
18 And he that saith: Show unto me, or ye shall be smitten—
let him beware lest he commandeth that which is forbidden of the Lord.
[ ]
19 For behold, the same that judgeth rashly shall be judged rashly again; for according to his works shall his wages be; therefore, he that smiteth shall be smitten again, of the Lord.
20 Behold what the scripture says—man shall not smite, neither shall he judge; for judgment is mine, saith the Lord, and vengeance is mine also, and I will repay.
21 And he
that shall breathe out wrath and strifes against the work of the Lord,
and against the covenant people of the Lord who are the house of
Israel, and shall say: We will destroy the work of the Lord, and the
Lord will not remember his covenant which he hath made unto the house
of Israel—the same is in danger to be hewn down and cast into the fire;
22 For the eternal purposes of the Lord shall roll on, until all his promises shall be fulfilled.
23
Search the prophecies of Isaiah.
[ One more Time - this seems to be a message common to almost every prophet in the Book of Mormon as well as the Savior when he was on the earth. ] Behold, I cannot write them. Yea, behold I say unto you,
that those saints who have gone before me,
[ See Enos - Enos 1:13-15, Nephi - 2 Ne. 5:29-32) to king Benjamin
(Mosiah 1:3-6) to Alma - Alma 37:1-18) to Mormon (Moroni 9:24). ] who have possessed this land, shall cry, yea, even from the dust will they cry unto the Lord; and as the Lord liveth he will remember the covenant which he hath made with them.
24 And
he knoweth their prayers,
[ Who's prayers? The saints that have gone on before including the prophets in this land - What were they praying for? a time when the fullness of the gospel, including all of the covenant ordinances would be restored to their descendants D&C 10:46-51. ] that they were in behalf of their brethren. And he knoweth their faith,
for in his name could they remove mountains;
[ As done by the brother of Jared, see Ether 12:30 . Also he does not
say that they did but that they could have if they needed. ] and in his name could they cause the earth to shake; and by the power of his word did they cause prisons to tumble to the earth; yea, even the fiery furnace could not harm them, neither wild beasts nor poisonous serpents, because of the power of his word.
25 And behold,
their prayers were also in behalf of him [ The saints that have gone on before even prayed for Joseph Smith. ] that the Lord should suffer to bring these things forth.
26 And
no one need say they shall not come,
[ What are we talking about here - they? the records (Book Of Mormon) that contain the
teachings and fullness of the gospel D&C 10:46-51. ] for
they surely shall, for the Lord hath spoken it; for out of
the earth shall they come, by the hand of the Lord, and none can stay it; and
it shall come in a day when it shall be said that miracles are done away; and
it shall come even as if one should speak from the dead.
[ Moroni has seen the future, the coming forth of the Book Of Mormon, what things look like at that time and how it will come forth through Joseph Smith. What does that mean - as one who speaks from the dead- How do dead men speak? Through there books, and the traditions of their fathers. ]
27 And
it shall come in a day when the blood of saints shall cry unto the Lord, because of secret combinations and the works of darkness.
[ What examples do we have of this happening? Nauvoo... ]
28 Yea, it shall come in a day when the
power of God shall be denied,
and churches become defiled and be lifted up in the pride of their hearts;
[ How
do churches become lifted up in the pride of their hearts? vs
31 it matterereth not what you do - the Lord loves you either way, they distort the doctrines of God to make them fit man or their purpose, the idea that what they are doing is right in the eyes of God (pride). ] yea, even in a day when leaders of churches and teachers shall rise in the pride of their hearts,
even to the envying of them who belong to their churches. [ Or they are proud of the size of their congregations. ]
29 Yea, it shall come in a day when
there shall be heard of fires,
[ ] and tempests, and vapors of smoke in foreign lands;
30 And there shall also be
heard of wars, rumors of wars,
[
American Revolutionary War, The Pasha of Tripoli declared war on the
United States, Battle of the Alamo, Indian wars throughout the west,
Battle of San Jacinto, the Mexican War, The Crimean War, First
and Second Opium War, The Battle of Antietam - known as the "America's
Bloodiest Day.", Battle of Gettysburg, Civil War 1861-1865. ] and earthquakes in divers places.
31 Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be great pollutions upon the face of the earth;
there shall be murders, and robbing, and lying, and deceivings, and whoredoms, and all manner of abominations;
[ Or back to the basics that Satan taught Cain at the first that you can murder and get gain. Any of those going on? well if it is not already here it is certainly getting close. ] when there shall be many who will say,
Do this, or do that, and it mattereth not, for the Lord will uphold such at the last day.
[ Is this not the culmination of the murders and robbing, lying and deceit - to build a church that supports your cause whatever it may be. Why would the Lord give us commandments if we were not supposed to live them? What and where do we hear this message - examples? God loves all of his children equally - no matter what they do, and will forgive them because he loves them so much - is that not the most common message that we hear from religion today. It certainly is not a message of repenting, of making and keeping covenants. ] But wo unto such, for they are in the gall of bitterness and in the bonds of iniquity.
32 Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be churches built up that shall say:
Come unto me, and for your money you shall be forgiven of your sins.
[ For money we are a diverse congregation, not one united under the leadership of God - where the rules do not change with the times, we will be whatever the congregation wants to hear. Paul warned us of such times in Eph. 4:11-14. ]
33
O ye wicked and perverse and stiffnecked people, why have ye built up churches unto yourselves to get gain? [ What kind of gains can be had by building up a church? Power, money, ability to establish the rules of how people should act, freedom... ] Why have ye transfigured the holy word of God, that ye might bring damnation upon your souls? [ What does it mean to transfigure? To change in outward form or appearance; transform. ] Behold, look ye unto the revelations of God; for behold, the time cometh at that day when all these things must be fulfilled.
34
Behold, the Lord hath shown unto me great and marvelous things concerning that which must shortly come, at that day when these things shall come forth among you.
[ so let's recap what will be happening on the earth when these records come forth? (1) People will say there are no miracles. vs26
(2) The blood of the saints shall cry from the ground, for example, from the well at Haun’s Mill. vs 27
(3) The power of God will be denied.
vs 28 (4) Churches shall become defiled and lifted up in pride. vs28
(5) Leaders and teachers of churches shall be lifted up in the pride of their hearts. vs 28
(6) People will hear of fires and tempests and vapors of smoke in foreign lands. vs 29
(7) There will be great pollution on the face of the earth
(8) There will be all manner of abominations.
(9) Churches will forgive sins for money. ]
[ At this point is also worth noting that Moroni has seen some kind of vision or had some kind of revelation concerning the purpose and importance of the plates he has been entrusted with. It would appear that he has seen the same vision and scenes that were seen by the Brother of Jared, Ezra, Daniel, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Zechariah, Joel, Ether, John and Nephi. It is plain from 8:35 and 9:30, as well as the various very detailed descriptions from 8:26-9:29, that Moroni has had some sort of revelation. Why would the Lord grant such a thing? Moroni has
been through a lot, and he still has a lot to get through yet
before he deposits the plates. I would assume the Lord reveals
to him the importance of the plates and the extent to which they
will impact future generations. Given Moroni's depressed state
as manifested in v. 2-5, it would be easy to see him just giving
up and wandering off if he didn't really understand what the
implications of doing something like that would be. ]
35 Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. [ Why does the Lord show Moroni, Isaiah. Abraham, Paul... and others our day? 1) So they can prepare us, provide council for us. 2) To let them know that what they are doing has a purpose - to show them that glorious day when he will rule the earth again makes their individual and personal suffering all some how worth it.
"We know the challenges Abraham’s posterity
faced (and still do). We know of Moses’s problems with an Israelite people who left Egypt but couldn’t quite get Egypt to leave them. Isaiah was the prophet who saw the loss of the 10 Israelite tribes to the north. Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel were all prophets of captivity. Peter, James, John, and Paul, the great figures of the New Testament, all saw apostasy creeping into their world almost before the Savior had departed and certainly while they themselves were still living. Think of the prophets of the Book of Mormon, living in a dispensation ending with such painful communication between Mormon and Moroni about the plight they faced and the nations they loved dissolving into corruption, terror, and chaos.
In short, apostasy and destruction of one kind or another was the ultimate fate of every general dispensation we have ever had down through time. But here’s my theory. My theory is that those great men and women, the leaders in those ages past, were able to keep going, to keep testifying, to keep trying to do their best, not because they knew that they would succeed but because they knew that you would. I believe they took courage and hope not so much from their own circumstances as from yours—a magnificent congregation of young adults like you tonight gathered by the hundreds of thousands around the world in a determined effort to see the gospel prevail and triumph." - Terror, Triumph, and a Wedding Feast; Elder Jeffrey R. Holland Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles - CES Fireside for Young Adults September 12, 2004 Brigham Young University ] But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing. [ "Moroni said once, speaking to those of us who would receive his record in the last days:
“Behold, the Lord hath shown unto me great and marvelous things concerning that which must shortly come, [ Reference to the second coming of Christ. ] at that day when these things shall come forth among you.
“Behold, I speak unto you as if ye were present, and yet ye are not. But behold, Jesus Christ hath shown you unto me, and I know your doing” (Mormon 8:34–35).
One way or another, I think virtually all of the prophets and early apostles had their visionary moments of our time—a view that gave them courage in their own less-successful eras. Those early brethren knew an amazing amount about us. Prophets such as Moses, Nephi, and the brother of Jared saw the latter days in tremendously detailed vision. some of what they saw wasn’t pleasing, but surely all those earlier generations took heart from knowing that there would finally be one dispensation that would not fail.
Ours, not theirs, was the day that gave them “heavenly and joyful anticipations” and caused them to sing and prophesy of victory. Ours is the day, collectively speaking, toward which the prophets have been looking from the beginning of time, and those earlier brethren are over there still cheering us on! In a very real way, their chance to consider themselves fully successful depends on our faithfulness and our victory. I love the idea of going into the battle of the last days representing Alma and Abinadi and what they pled for and representing Peter and Paul and the sacrifices they made. If you can’t get excited about that kind of assignment in the drama of history, you can’t get excited!
A Wedding Feast
Let me add another element to this view of the dispensation that I think follows automatically. Because ours is the last and greatest of all dispensations, because all things will eventually culminate and be fulfilled in our era, there is, therefore, one particular, very specific responsibility that falls to those of us in the Church now that did not rest quite the same way on the shoulders of Church members in any earlier time. Unlike the Church in the days of Abraham or Moses, Isaiah or Ezekiel, or even in the New Testament days of James and John, we have a responsibility to prepare the Church of the Lamb of God to receive the Lamb of God—in person, in triumphant glory, in His millennial role as Lord of Lords and King of Kings. No other dispensation ever had that duty.
In the language of the scriptures, we are the ones designated in all of history who must prepare the bride for the advent of the Bridegroom and be worthy of an invitation to the wedding feast (see Matthew 25:1–12; 22:2–14; D&C 88:92, 96). Collectively speaking—whether it is in our lifetime or our children’s or our grandchildren’s or whenever—we nevertheless have the responsibility as a Church and as individual members of that Church to be worthy to have Christ come to us, to be worthy to have Him greet us, and to have Him accept and receive and embrace us. The lives we present to Him in that sacred hour must be worthy of Him!" - Terror, Triumph, and a Wedding Feast; Elder Jeffrey R. Holland Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles - CES Fireside for Young Adults September 12, 2004 Brigham Young University]
36 And
I know that ye do walk in the pride of your hearts; and
there are none save a few only who do not lift themselves up in the pride of their hearts, unto the wearing of very fine apparel,
unto envying,
[ A feeling of discontent or covetousness with regard to another's advantages, success, possessions. ] and
strifes,
[ Vigorous or bitter conflict, discord, or antagonism. ] and
malice,
[ Desire to inflict injury, harm, or suffering on another, either because of a hostile impulse or out of deep-seated meanness. ] and persecutions, and all manner of iniquities; and your churches, yea, even every one,
have become polluted because of the pride of your hearts.
[ In what ways do we pollute our hearts with pride? 1)
We create a casting system - I am better than you because - I wear better clothes, live in a better house, am smarter... 2) vs 31 teach that "it matterereth not what you do - the Lord loves you" 3) We think that our
ways are better than the Lords ways - we are smarter than our leaders - surely they are mislead on this topic or that one. They are out of
touch not us. Who should hold The Priesthood, Gay Marriage.. see vs 33
"we seek to transfigure the word of God"]
37 For
behold, ye do love money, and your substance, and your fine apparel,
and the adorning of your churches, more than ye love the poor and the
needy, the sick and the afflicted.
38 O ye pollutions, ye hypocrites, ye teachers, who sell
yourselves for that which will canker,
[ Remember Moroni
has seen our day - he knows we are the chosen ones who will see the Savior
of the world return - he knows he will not; and so as a challenge us
he asks three questions that we as saints of the latter days should ask
ourselves.] why
have ye polluted the holy church of God? [ How
do we pollute the holy church of God? ] Why
are ye ashamed to
take upon you the name of Christ? [ How
or what do we do that shows that we are ashamed of the name of Christ?
How do we become less so? ] Why
do ye not think that greater is the value of an endless happiness than
that misery which
never dies—because of the praise of
the world? [ What do we do to value praise
of the world over endless happiness? What can we do now to change? ]
39
Why do ye adorn yourselves with that which hath no life, and yet suffer the
hungry, [ Maybe another way to say this is they are treating things like people and people like things. ] and the needy, and the naked, and the sick and the afflicted to
pass by you, and notice them not?
40
Yea,
why do ye build up your secret abominations to get gain, [ We might ask this question another way. why do you think to sell your eternal life just to have power and money today? Eternity os a long time. ] and cause that widows should mourn before the Lord, and also orphans to mourn before the Lord, and also the blood of their fathers and their husbands to cry unto the Lord from the ground, for vengeance upon your heads?
41 Behold, the sword of vengeance hangeth over you; and the time soon cometh that he avengeth the blood of the saints upon you, for he will not suffer their cries any longer.

Verse 6 [A.D. 401].
