CHAPTER 5
The mode of administering the sacramental wine is set forth. [Between A.D. 400 and 421]

1 THE manner of administering the wine—Behold, they took the cup, [ Is or was this a single cup? or is it representative. Papa always told stories of why his family sat on the front row. They used to pass the sacrament with two buckets of water on the end of the asiles and a ladle that everyone sipped out of; before they started to use the glass cups. The cup that we take in sacrament has reference to us acting as the bride and Christ as the Bridegroom. This has reference to the Jewish wedding traditions. In which after the marriage contract was arranged by the father's, after the bride price was established, after the bridegroom gave the bride to be a generous gift, the bridegroom would sit down with the bride to be and poor a glass of wine(symbolic of blood). Then the bride would have 30 seconds to decide whether to drink the glass of wine or not. To drink the cup meant that she accepted all of the covenants (the marriage agreements) and was ready to become bethrothed, if she did not drink within that 30 seconds the bridegroom would simple leave never to be seen of again. If she did drink then they were considered married. At that point the groom would often recite the formal statement "Thou art set apart(consecrated) for me according to the law of Moses and Israel". So with us as the bride and we partake of the cup we are then saying in essence that "I now covenant with you and accept the covenant that was agreed upon by our Father". ] and said:

2 O God, the Eternal Father, we ask thee, in the name of thy son, Jesus Christ, to bless and sanctify this wine to the souls of all those who drink of it, that they may do it in remembrance of the blood of thy son, [ Representing the blood spilt for us to allow us to be forgiven of sin. The blood is the thing that keeps us and animals alive; without it we are done. So it is with the atonement. Blood is also symbolic of eternity; the blood spilt has eternal blessings for us as well. By remembering him; and his atonement. By accepting that he can save us through repentance; the partaker is covered under the atonemet of the Savior. ] which was shed for them; [ The only reason he did it was for us. He was without sin and did not need it. ] that they may witness unto thee, O God, the Eternal Father, that they do always remember him, [Perhaps the slight difference in wording between the two prayers suggests a progressive commitment. The blessing on the bread says, “that they are willing to take upon them the name of thy son.” The blessing on the water reads, “that they do always remember him.] that they may have his Spirit to be with them. Amen.
