PSALM 87
The Lord loves the gates of Zion and he himself shall establish her.
1 HIS foundation is in the holy mountains. [ Well there are not any mountains in Independence Missouri so what is he suggesting here? That it is a place that is lifted up like unto the mountains. (Isaiah 28:16)]
2 The LORD loveth the gates [ Cities. ] of Zion [ This is the covenant name. ] more than all the dwellings of Jacob. [ Jacob is the family name. We are responsible to turn the family name to the covenant name, which is Zion, christian, Israel if we are true and faithful. ] .
3 Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. Selah. [ Means - forever. Or Zion. (Moses 7:18-19) ]
4 I will make mention of [ Kind as if to say in passing or I am not going to spend much time on this, I am going to just make mention of it. ] Rahab [ And what is he going to make mention of, "Rahab" literally means “pride” or “arrogance”. Rahab is Egypt for 2,000 years enjoyed a magnificent civilization with pyramids, culture... ] and Babylon [ It had walls 13 miles long and they were as high as 300 feet on one side, 85 foot thick with 25 gates on each side of the city. Inside of the city proper there were over 1,000 temples to their idols. It was a place with wealth beyond description. (Isa. 13:19) ] to them that know me: behold Philistia, [ The land of the Philistines, who where war mongers, strong and powerful in part because they had a strategic advantage in war as they invented steel swords. ] and Tyre, [ Along the coast of Lebanon. It was one of the most wealthy Merchant cities on the Mediterranean Coast. It was a very strong fortified City. It was the most important city in the land of Phoenicia it had never been conquered. Alexander the Great is the one who finally conquered Tyre. It was one of the most popular ports for the ships of the day, as they would come and go constantly with their tremendous wealth. ] with Ethiopia; [ Was known for its gold mines. They were one of the stronest contries for a brief time as well. (Isa. 20:2-5 Where the Lord speaks of the destruction of Ethiopia)] this man was born there. [ Which means that if you or I lived in that day and we met someone from Babylon even though he was in a different area you could tell by the way he's dressed, you may not understand his language, but if you could and you where to ask him where he was from. He would explain with great pride as he'd say "what why I'm from Babylon". You might respond with "is it what they say it is? Is the wall really what they say it is" he would answer oh yes and much more you can imagine. His manner of speech would one of great pride. Interesting thing is that all of these places are and have been destroyed today. ]
5 And of Zion it shall be said, [ So we have a contrast going on here. He is comparing the man who was born in and is from Babylon, with the man who is born in Zion. ] This and that man was born in her: [ He was born again. We must be born again if we are to live in the Holy city. (Alma 5 Where the Savior will explain to us through Alma the born again process.) ] and the highest himself [ God himself - it will be built under the Saviors direction. ] shall establish her.
6 The LORD shall count, when he writeth up the people, [ A record is kept that this man was born there, so there will be no one missing who are worthy. Modern day interpretation: are worthy to be there will be allowed to be there. So in our day God is not building all these temples in the world for you and I to abandon them and to go to Missouri. Yes there will be key people who will be called to go there to build that Holy City. However; some of us will be asked to stay in Layton, Salt Lake, Ogden, Provo and man those temples. Our job will be to continue the great work, and in the process we will not lose a single blessing. The Savior can conduct conference in the complex back there and involve us as though we're sitting on the front row, but nothing will be lost on us either. ] that this man was born there. Selah.
