THE REVELATION
OF ST JOHN THE DIVINE
CHAPTER 19
The marriage supper of the Lamb is made ready—The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy—Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords.
AND after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven, saying, Alleluia; Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God:
For true and righteous are his judgments: for he hath judged the great whore, [ The people rejoicing here are composed of, at least in part, the martyrs from 6:10 who were asking for God to judge those who murdered them. ] which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand.
And again they said, Alleluia. And her smoke rose up for ever and ever.
And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts [ From earlier chapters. If you look at the picture from the Rome temple dedication you have 12 statues of the apostles of old, and the 12 current apostles so 24 elders. with The christus and the first presidency making up the 4 beasts. The footnote for the four beast goes to cherubem. Those who are keeping the way of the tree of life. I could also see that the 24 elders are 12 elders from the lost ten tribes and twelve from those who are our apostles on the earth today. ] fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.
And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great.
And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: [ Means praise to the Lord God Jehovah - this will happen in the future Russell M Nelson Nov 18, 2016 special bishops training session. ] for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. [ Also translated as "Our Lord God, the Almighty, reigneth". A consolation that the Almighty never trusts the reins of the government of the universe his kindgom or church out of his hands! What therefore has his Church to fear? ]
Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb [ The Marriage supper of the Lamb, cp. Isa. 54:4-8, Hos. 2:14-23, Matt. 22:1-14, Matt. 25:1-13, 2 Cor. 11:2. ] is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. [ The fully restored and righteous Israel (she has been gathered from the four corners of the earth as well as the ends of heaven to which she was both scattered and lead away) is symbolically presented as a virtuous bride to the Lamb. Or the church has prepared itself for his coming. We are given a definition of what that means in the next verse. ]
And to her was granted that she [ Restored Israel - the scattered, the gathered and the lead away. ] should be arrayed in fine linen, [ The doctrine should be righteous and pure. Or she is "arrayed" or clothed - endowed, it was also part of an initiation, or investure in something or someone. Then we read that this clothing is done so in God's robes of righteousness. ] clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. [ "righteousness" we are in a right relationship with or you have been loyal and true(maybe not perfect but you are trying, and your heart is certainly in the right place). Here we have the definition for white. A symbol of righteousness, purity, white togas we also wore in ancient time as a statement of victory - the roman soldiers or officers would wear white after they won a battle, so it also represents overcoming the temptations of the world. ]
And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. [ Inserted in amongst this vision of heaven, the angel guiding John through the vision stops to comment to John. He tells John to write "Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb" and then he tells him what he has heard is the true word of God. At this point the saints have endured the trails and are gathered into the America's. ] And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.
And I fell at his feet to worship him. [ John assumes the angel is Jesus or God himself and falls down to worship him. ] And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, [ John get up; I am not the Savior or God I am sent by them and I have a message for you. ] and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
And I saw heaven opened, [ The apocalypse, or revealing, of heavenly things to those on earth. The heavens are presently obscured to us, but in that day they will be revealed. ] and behold a white horse; [ Christ comes as a conqueror this time, cf. 6:2, ct. Matt. 21:7. In Roman culture - White togas were frequently presented to victorious generals as a symbol of their victory. White was so important in Roman society that it was used for centuries after the Roman Empire fell. It is still seen as a colour of integrity, strength, and authority today, making it one of the most enduring symbols of Roman culture. ] and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, [ Jesus is the only one to be completely faithful and true to the Father, never sinning against Him. Christ is the only one who is qualified, through righteousness, to judge the quick and dead; and, He will personally make war against satan that will end the war satan started in Heaven. ] in righteousness he doth judge and make war. [ Unlike men who judge and make war unrighteously (cf. James 4:1), the Lord does so justly. Men make war for power, the Lord makes war to cleanse the earth of the wicked. ]
His eyes [ The eyes of Jesus Christ. ] were as a flame of fire, [ He is exalted see 1:14. ] and on his head were many crowns; [ Much authority. His glory is undeniable. He now has many crowns, possibly one for each of the many names he acquired on earth; all of which may be as jewels added to THE CROWN first given in Heaven. ] and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. [ We might assume the name here is that of the Father, see John 17:25. We know Jesus' name and the various name-titles he bears. ]
And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: [ To show that he was just come from recent slaughter. Isa. 63:1-6. ] and his name is called The Word of God. [ Jesus is the personification of God's words and Laws, cf. John 1:1-4, 3 Ne. 15:5-9. ]
And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, [ Jesus descends with the armies of heaven. Interesting words here "which were in heaven" this is the armies of the Ten Tribes which used to be in the heavens. ] clothed in [ So this could be better translated as "[endowed] in fine linen". The word endowed appears only once in the New Testament as the word endued in Luk 24:49. However, the greek word used is "endyō" which is translated as; put on, or had not on (18x), clothed with (2x), clothed in (2x), have on (2x), clothe with (1x), be endued (1x), arrayed in (1x), be clothed (1x), and is used with the nuance of 'being enveloped by' which is very much like "being encircled by" in the context of robes of righteousness. If you retranslate the word "endyo" to "endowed" gain some interesting perspectives as to how we might better understand our own temple experience where we put on, are clothed with, and endowed, or encircled by the robes of righteousness. ] fine linen, white and clean. [ The armies of heaven are arrayed all in white with white being a symbol of their sanctified condition having overcome (white is a symbol of purity, but also a symbol of overcoming in battle) the world. see 3:4, 7:14. ]
And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, [ Jesus and his army that has descended from heaven punish the wicked of the earth. ] that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: [ The IV/JST emends the "rod of iron" to "the word of his mouth", see. 1 Ne. 11:25. The people are held accountable for the words he has spoken himself, and through his prophets, see John 5:45-46, John 12:48, 2 Ne. 25:18, Moroni 10:27. So it describes God as ruling the nations with an iron rod, which is a description of his power and authority. This is the same manner in which the Rod is eluded too in D&C 113:3-4. ] and he treadeth the winepress [ Recall the blood that was sent some 200 miles in every direction, the depth of a horses bridle (Rev 14:20). As the grapes are trodden to express the juice, so his enemies shall be bruised and beaten, so that their life's blood shall be poured out. see 14:19-20, Isa. 63:3, Lam. 1:15, D&C 76:107, D&C 88:106, D&C 133:50. ] of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
And he hath on his vesture [ A garment; a robe. Clothing; covering. ] and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, [ What does this phrase really mean? In Rev 17:14 Christ is given a list of new names one of the is "King of kings(plural)" It’s because he promises in Revelation to make those who overcome in this world to be kings/queens just like he is, and as a result he then is "the King of Kings". ] , AND LORD OF LORDS. [ Future event - Russell M Nelson Nov 18, 2016 special bishops training session. Jesus will take his rightful position as King over the kings of the earth, and Lord over lords of the earth. ]
And I saw an angel standing in the sun; [ Exceedingly luminous; every part of him emitting rays of light. ] and he cried with a loud voice, [ Note what the angel announces; the great and terrible sacrificial feast of destruction. Ezek. 39:17-20 is being paraphrased here. This bloodbath / slaughter / sacrifice / feast is the destruction of the wicked, cf. Deut. 32, Isa. 34, Isa. 29:1, Isa. 30:33, Jer. 46:10, Ezek. 34:17, Zeph. 1:7-13. Since the fowls are encouraged to come and eat freely of the remains suggests that the bodies are not buried. Leaving the victims of war unburied after being killed in war is a classic covenant curse, Deut. 28:26, Jer. 7:33. It suggests that one side lost so bad that there are either no survivors to bury the dead, or the survivors had to flee or face death themselves. ] saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; [ Exekiel 39:19 ]
That ye may eat the flesh of kings, [ Those who have ruled with such destruction on the earth are dead such that the fowls of the air can have free rein on the flesh of their bodies. They are not special any more. This is the supper of the Great God for them vs 17. ] and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. [ Those that are fighting against the Lamb of God. (D&C 29:18) ]
And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him [ The beast and his armies gather to wage war against Christ. They think that they have it all figured out at this point, it will look as they do so as well, but are they in for a surprise. This is taking place in Jerusalem, the armies of the world have gathered to destroy the Jews once and for all as they are blamed for all of the bad in the world. ] that sat on the horse, and against his [ Christs. ] army.
And the beast was taken, [ Satan. They are overthrown. The beast see 13:1. Taken because wormwood and the beast became paralyzed with fear. (See Book of Enoch 1:4-5). ] and with him the false prophet [ The stout horn/wormwood. See 13:11 ] that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
And the remnant were slain with the sword of him [ Almost as if in a single word Christ destroys everyone except the Beast and wormwood. vs 20. Why? Because God wants them to witness the entire destruction of everything that they cherish. It is all gone you have nothing. YOu now know who is in complete control. Then after they see the total and complete destruction they (the beast and wormwood) are thrown alive into the lake of fire and brimstone. Isaiah see this same event in Isa 34:1-5. ] that sat upon the horse, which sword [ The IV/JST emends this to "word" consistent with v. 15. ] proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. [ The conjunction of verses 20 and 21 suggest that there is a mixture of what will happen to these individuals both from a physical perspective (e.g., the fowls were filled with their flesh) as well as the spiritual perspective (e.g., cast alive into a lake of fire, slain with the word) themes, which at this point in time are happening all at once. As the spirit world will be cleaned out with the second phase of the First Resurrection, those in post-mortal spiritual darkness go into their allotted suffering, cf. Isa. 24:21-22, Isa. 34:2-5, D&C 88:100-101. These mortals who are killed at the Day of the Lord don't have any waiting period in between like they do at present, they go straight into suffering and await the Second Resurrection. ]
