THE REVELATION
OF ST JOHN THE DIVINE
CHAPTER 20
Satan is bound during the Millennium—The saints shall then live and reign with Christ—The dead stand before God and are judged out of the books according to their works.
1 AND I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit [ I assume that would be the power of the Priesthood. The keys to getting out of the bottomless pit are brought forth individually through the ordinances of the priesthood. This angel is identified as John The Revelator as he is identified as the fifth angel. The one who holds the keys to the bottomless pit. see Rev 9:11. However; Joseph Smith provided this information about one of the facsimile's that make up the Book of Joseph which he was working on prior to his death. He said "The inner end of the same roll. (referring to Joseph's record) presents a representation of the judgement: At one view you behold the Savior seated upon his throne, crowned, and holding the sceptres of righteousness and power, before whom also, are assembled the twelve tribes of Israel, the nations, languages and tongues of the earth, the kingdoms of the world over which satan is represented as reigning. Michael the archangel, holding the key of the bottomless pit, and at the same time the devil is being chained and shut up in the bottomless pit. But upon this last scene, I am able only to give you a shadow to the real picture." Messenger and Advocate Volume 2 (Oct 1835-Sept 1836), Vol 2 Dec 1835 no.15 232-237. So does John hold the keys to the bottomless pit and Michael is just holding them up? Or does this suggest that Michael holds the keys? ] and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, [ Gen. 3:14, Isa. 27:1, 1 Ne. 20:2 ] which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, [ Satan is bound for the Millennium. ]
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
4 And I saw thrones, and they [ Those who are faithful and have overcome the world. ] sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; [ Those avoiding the mark of the beast (cf. 13:16, 14:9) they are the righteous who survive the Day of the Lord along with their posterity. ] and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. [ Those who were not righteous enough to inherit the level to which the earth has been exalted to. ] This is the first resurrection. [ Compare with D&C 88:100-101 ]
Blessed and holy is he that hath part [ The IV/JST emends this to "blessed and holy are they who hath part" making it gender inclusive. ] in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. [ At this point we need to consider that the earth is not in the celestial state at this point as it will not be in that state until after the end when satan is losed for a short period then locked away forever. See Vs 7. ]
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, [ Satan is freed after the Millennium for a short period of time. See D&C 88:110-115. So this will be th epost millennial battle of Gog and Magog. There will be two battles both called the battles of Gog and Magog. One is a pre-millennial battle which contains the scriptures contain a great deal of information on. Then there is the post-millennial the scriptures that deal with this battle are found in Revelation 20:7-9 and Doctrine & Covenants 88 111-115. Thats a total of eight verses. So it becomes apparent that the Savior was not too interested at this point to give us much information on the post-millennial battle. Maybe because it is such a ways off and that instruction will come ata time that we need it. However; the pre-millennial battle should concern us. ]
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, [ These names are given as references to different groups of people, and are identified as such by how they behave. Unrighteously. ] to gather them together to battle: [ Satan will gather everyone that he can from wherever he can and assemble them together for pne last knock drown drag out battle. A fight to the finish. ] the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. [ This number suggests that there are a lot of them. This is kind of scary. These are those who have been locked down for a thousand years, designing and planning what they will do when they get their chance again. So the despise and hatred that they will have will be incredible and when you combine that with the number of them. It does not sound pretty. ]
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: [ These hosts pf the deep converge on Jerusalem to destroy it. ] and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. [ God shows his force and destroys them with fire. ]
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. [ While Satan will be loosed for a while longer ultimately he is doomed, cp. D&C 88:111-115. Another huge polarizing conflict arises with heaven interceding and annihilating the wicked by fire. The figures of Gog and Magog are derived from Ezek. 38. ]
11 And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, small and great, [ Everyone that has not already been judged will be judged. The entire spirit world will be emptied at this point. Remember those who were worthy to inherit the Celestial Kingdom have already been judge and came for in the first resurrection. The body with which you are resurrected will be the body that you inherit for eternity, if so you have already been judged to come forth at that time. See 1 Cor 14:39-42; D&C 76:70. ] stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. [ What are the works that are judged here? ]
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [ The death of the spirit of man. Which is the damnation of his progress. Separation from God and His influences; to die as to things pertaining to righteousness. see Alma 12:16; Hel. 14:16–19; D&C 76:36–38 ]
15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. [ These would be the son's of perdition. While resurrected they will not inherit bodies with any glory at all, as a result of rejecting the Father and the son. ]
